"numbness and pain"
| |
my dentist sent me to an endodontist for a root canel on a very infected tooth. (low right, the one right in front of my wisdom tooth)well i had the root canel on tuesday morning and that night i was up all night in pain. the pain meds didn't seem to be helping at all then i had a brief numbness of my lower lip. it didn't last long at first then by friday morning it just stayed numb. i've had root canels before and never had this kind of pain. it hurt so bad i wished someone could just knock me out so maybe i could not hurt for a few minutes. the pain is some better but the numbness is still there. i didn't have this much pain having a c-section with my two children. so i started looking for answers thinking something had to be wrong other than the tooth just being infected causing the pain. which is what the doctor said. i was begaining to think i was crazy until i found this site. i go back to myregular dentist tomorrow and intend to ask alot of questions. i really think he hit my nerve when he did the shot. i was numb from right below my right eye, down my neck and just passed my ear. i don't know if that was normal but i had never been numb that much before then when the feeling came back i wanted to scream and would have if it would have helped. from what i've said do you think he hit a nerve. i know something isn't normal. thanks for the great info and site. at least i know i'm not crazy. thanks! Denise!!!!!! |

When I got the injection I felt a sharp pain in my tongue but the dentist knew right away that he probably hit the nerve and right away he said "tongue or ear?" so I bet yours affected the ear and that area. Mine is here to stay and keeping busy helps and the initial real dreadful pain has gone away but I am left with a metalic taste and I guess a burning sensation all the time. Sometimes worse than others and any stress seems to be worse, also getting overly tired, driving a car ( WEIRD ONE) but Ross has that one too, exercising increases the discomfort. I am sorry for all of us as going to the dentist now is quite a challenge for fear of it happening again!!!! |

I have gone through this numbness on 4 different occasions. Usually for me it goes away in about 4 to 5 months. I just went to the dentist yesterday to have a filling repaired and I thought to myself that I ought to tell him to be careful during the injection not to hit the lingual nerve, but then I thought he surely won't hit it again. Well I was wrong. Shortly after he inserted the needle I felt a burning sensation in my tongue and I knew that I was going to be numb again for several months. The right side of my tongue is now numb, but at least it isn't painful. It is something I can live with until it heals again. I am getting tired of having to go through this time and time again though. I have probably spent most of two years total with this numbness. |

Tom, there are alternatives to injection for dental procedures. Go to the home page and read about them. If you have recovered four times then there is obviously residual damage and your chances of recurrance may be greater. Hopefully when you recover you won't have to go through this again. It is very encouraging that you have recovered a number of times. I would also ask what the doctor is using in the injection as this may contribute to what keeps occuring. good Luck and post back when recovered. CT |
