"Sore Tongue"

Within a couple weeks of having all four wisdom teeth surgically removed, I noticed pain in my tongue. When it did not go away, I looked at my tongue in the mirror, and it had a slight white coating. Having never experienced a sore or whitish tongue before, so I thought I might have gotten oral thrush from taking antibiotics after the surgery. (I had never seen thrush and did not know what it would look like.)

It is now nine months after the surgery, and my tongue is still slightly sore with a little bit of numbness, mainly just toward the front of the tongue. I have been treated with antifungal medications twice, and antibiotics once, and nothing helped. Tonight I just stumbled upon this web site, and I now feel with absolutely no doubt that I have nerve damage from some aspect of the wisdom teeth removal.

I spent several months going to my doctor and being treated for conditions which I don't even have. I never knew that nerve damage was even a possiblity. It feels really good to finally know what is wrong, and I feel lucky that my pain is not severe, just a minor irritation. The only thing that puzzles me is the slight white coating on the tongue. Has anyone else had this? I did read in one medical book that a white coating can be caused by injury to the tongue.

Now, close to a year after the surgery, is there any reason to contact the oral surgeon who took my teeth out? My case doesn't seem very sever compared to most others here, and I didn't even tell him that my tongue was damaged, because I did not know what was wrong until now. I would appreciate the thoughts of anyone who has experienced something similar.

   Angie,

I was so thankful to read your post. My lingual nerves were injured from my wisdom teeth extractions, but they have mostly recovered. My tongue gets slightly irritated, especially with stress. My tongue too has had a slight white coating in some areas since the injury, so I bought a tongue scraper and diligently clean my tongue morning and night so that it is sparkling clean but it still gets the slight whitish in areas.

After reading your post it hit me--maybe the decreased innervation in areas means the cells aren't being replaced and renewed as efficiently as before, so hence the slight whitish cast. I'm not sure if tongue cells are renewed like skin cells, but maybe that's it.

I find that exercise and good energy really really help.

Ursula

Ursula, thank you for your response! I had eventually started brushing my tongue well, morning and night, and that did help the whiteness, just not the soreness. I have always taken good care of myself, so I felt sure that I didn't have a nutritional deficiency or something like that causing my problems. But of course now that I realize that I have nerve damage, it is all explained.

Good luck with a full tongue recovery -- you have helped my state of mind! It is nice to know that what I have been experiencing is not completely out of the ordinary.

Angie

The whitish color to the tongue sounds interesting. The tongue epithelium is a squamous mucosa, with a lot of interesting aspects to it because of the specialized innervation for taste. Like the skin, it does constantly regenerate cells. It can be effected by some disorders that effect the skin, some of which can cause whitish patches. The relationship of the whitish patches to nerve damage is not immediately apparent to me, so I will have to look around.

It would be interesting to have an opinion from a dermatologist as well as an ENT physician.

Do the white patches only occur on the side of the nerve damage? Does it effect the same region as the nerve damage, or are they small patches? Do they come and go, or is it pretty constant? Does the tongue injury cause you to rub the tongue on teeth, etc?

Let me think about this one and ask around.

Ross

The whiteness is not in patches -- it covers the entire tongue, but is whiter in the back than in the front (my tongue is only sore on about the front inch of the tongue). The tip of the tongue and the outer edges of the tongue always stay a normal pink color. The whiteness is very similar to what you might sometimes have very mildly first thing in the morning, especially if you have a slight cold or something. It is not really much of a covering -- the texture of the tongue is the same as a normal tongue, and it is not in plaque-like spots (like with thrush.) If I brush my tongue every day it stays a normal pink color. The whitish color is constant unless I brush the tongue once or twice a day, which I do now to keep it pink. My American Medical Association Family Medical Guide says that glossitis, an inflamation of the tongue (which can be white), is sometimes caused by tongue injury.

My doctor has treated it with two different anti-fungal medications and a round of antibiotics, none of which affected it at all. The pain I feel in my tongue is similar to what you feel after burning your tongue on a very hot drink -- a little sore yet a little numb, sometimes a little tingly. It started feeling this way immediately after having my wisdom teeth removed. It is not as sore as it was right after the surgery, but it did not improve much after the first month or so.

The tongue injury does not cause my tongue to rub on my teeth. Besides, the whiter part of the tongue is back where the teeth can't touch it anyway. I'm not too surprized that you're not familiar with it -- my doctor has been completely stumped. Extensive blood tests have ruled out any underlying systemic cause of the whiteness. I have (and have never had) any type of dermological problems.

If you ever see or hear anything along these lines, please let me know. Your site has been a big help to me!

I too have had a white coating on my tongue since my nerve injury from a wisdom tooth extraction three years ago. When I went back to the oral surgeon's office shortly after the extraction, her assistant made a remark to me about it (in a nasty way.) Nothing seemed to help except daily brushing. Now I never brush my teeth without brushing my tongue.

I also have a white coating on my tongue. It changes--sometimes its worse than others. Sometimes, it almost seems like its flaking and looks "dry" and "grainy". I noticed it right after my wisdom tooth was removed. I mentioned it to my oral surgeon but he never address it and I had larger issues to deal with. I figured it would go away, but it never did. I'm surprised no one has ever mentioned this before. I never thought to because I wasn't sure what it was from.

My white coating is also "thicker" in the back of the tongue and covers the whole tongue, not just the damaged side. I also notice that my mouth gets drier easier than it used to.

I bought a tongue scraper but it doesn't always seem to work. some days the coating is thicker than others.

Has anyone else tried anything to get a pinker tongue? I am curious to know the reason for this and how many people have experienced this.

I have had a white coating on my tongue and the color of my tongue seemed off. Recently I bought Bach's Rescue Remedy which helps soothe and heal the skin. It is made from flower essences. It has helped more than anything. The flavor causes me no discomfort at all which is unusual for me at this point in the recovery. The normal color of my tongue is beginning to reappear. I think it has helped reduce the swelling of my tongue because the teeth marks appear lessened.

It is such a relief to know that I am not the only one and others have had similar experiences. Your story could have been written by me.

I too had a wisdom tooth extraction upper left with everything appearing normal for two to three weeks then suddently I'd get a very dry mouth, as if someone had stuffed a load of cotten wool in my mouth and I instantly had to get a drink. This would last for 5 minutes or so and subside.

Then I had some inflammation in the side of my mouth which the doctor prescribed penicillin for. However I felt very sick - strange as I don't normally react badly to antibiotics. It was all downhill from there. I ended up in casualty because I could get no relief from the awful sensation in my mouth and the dryness which left my tongue very white. The doctor at casualty said I ought to see an ENT specialist just in case it a saliver problem, as one needs the enzymes to digest food and keep the mouth in good order. My doctor disputed this and said I need an oral surgeon. Unfortunately my tongue problem wasn't considered a problem and I received a biopsy for the inflammation on the cheek which was negative.

I was off work for three months, because I was tired, could only eat a very bland diet, mainly fish bananas and mash, anything that didn't irritate my mouth. In desperation I asked the doctor for nystatin for thrush and my tongue reverted to something resembling my tongue. I've had two more courses of antibiotics which resulted in a white tongue again, followed by two more courses of Nystatin.

My tongue hasn't been itself for some time. Like yours it goes white all over except for the sides and tip, especially if I'm subject to strong odours, perfumes, hosehold chemicals.

The confusion lies in whether it was wisdom extraction induced or thrush induced.

I carry a synthetic oral saliver spray and hope that the problem sorts itself.

I'm having an MRI scan soon to investigate the burning and pain in my top and bottom left side. The pain in the site of the extraction was explained by the dentist as being the bone healing which could take a few months.

I'm also on a yeast free diet and have read a book on candida which on reflection details some of my symptoms

Conclusion: Thrush low grade brought on by infection in the mouth after extraction and/or antibiotics,

OR

alteration in mucosa and sensation in the mouth due to damage after extraction.

OR BOTH

I think I could deal with the problem more if Doctors were less than baffled unless of course they feel liable in some way. They dismis the symptoms as neurotic etc......

I wish you all the best and good luck.

i am also experiencing the tounge pain and pain in my mouth, the top of my mouth feels blistered, my tounge burns and hurts the sides of my teeth will feel like i have a tooth ache in all my teeth. i too have taken anti-fungal meds. and my problems went away for a year. i took steroid injections in my shoulder and wrist and my symptoms have returned. the only thing that concerns me is that i have horrible headaches with my outbreaks. and i too am very limited to what i can eat. i use hydrogen-proxide that seems to help. i have a rx for liquid lidocane that also helps as well as oragel. i also have a burning sensation in my nose that i havent read anyone else talk about. ice on your mouth will help and sometimes i get relief from a heating pad and a massager. i place the massager on my teeth and the pain will go away. also if you will chew gum it will help with the tounge pain. your tounge can not hurt and tase at the same time. this is a night mare and i hope the steroid will get out of my system and my symptoms will go away. i think i have candida and nerve damage in my mouth. and your correct doctors will not even talk to you. they think your crazy. good luck, i hope we all recover soon.

I was interested to read about your tongue problem. I also suffered with this very severely a couple of years ago. After many weeks of investigation I discovered that it is quite common with there being over 1 million cases in the USA.
After reading hundreds of letters on this condition known as "Burning Tongue Syndrome" (check the internet) I tried everything suggested except when I read that some people claimed hot peppers could cure it. One weekend I was desperate enough and thought anything is worth a try. It worked.
After some investigation I realised that there was some research showing that one of the cranial nerves were invole, especially if there had been trauma to the mouth. I had a tooth removed just before this happened. Things started to fall into place, capsaicin, the main ingrediant in hot peppers, is used in the hospital for phantom pain(the pain people have in the nerve endings after amputation. It makes sense that the hot peppers work. I used them for about two weeks and the discomfort was gone. The reason I found your article now is I just had another tooth removed and my tongue is painful again, in a different part. I think that although my problem was solved last time I didn,t really believe it was due to the tooth.
Having read your article I am going out to buy more hot peppers.

I question whether that technique really does any good? If you do eat hot peppers, it would just help out the tongue externally rather then inside the body where the root of the cause lies. Does eating hot peppers just make the pain go away temporarily? I have a slight burning on the tip of my tongue, and would like to get more info on this hot pepper treatment.

thanks in advance.

Neal, if you try this hot pepper thing and it works let us all know. Personally, I have never been able to tolerate spicy hot food. It makes me feel as if I'm choking. I will say this, when my pain was at it's worst, I told everyone in hollering distance that I felt as if my mouth was stuffed with hot peppers and I couldn't spit them out. For anyone else who sees this post, I never have gotten rid of my coated tongue. I brush it and use a tongue cleaner and it doesn't help. I don't think it's any kind of a vitamin deficiency as I eat well and take alot of vitamins. I can say this, my pain has decreased so much, even in the last few months that I'm not going to worry about my tongue. God Bless You All. Mary

Boy am I glad i found you guys. Last year I started getting headaches. They finally figured out it was referred pain from a wisdom tooth but not before they discovered I also had a colloid cyst in my brain. That was a lucky break for me. The wisdom tooth socket became infected after removal, which caused them to put off the brain operation, but finally everything worked out. I had the cyst, which is benign removed in October and I thought I was all set. I am a healthy, athletic 50 year old. About six weeks ago though, I burned my tongue slightly and I have had the sore tongue thing going on ever since. Some days it is worse than others. The white stuff is fairly constant. There may be another factor: I have always been chemically sensitive and, against my better judgement, I let the realtor trying to sell my house talk me into letting a fly-by-night guy redo the wood floors. Long story short, the house didn't sell, I had to keep the windows closed because we bascially got gypped out of spring here, and I am still living in the house. Deep down I think the lingering chemical odor is causing my sore tongue. Had anybody else had a chemical reaction cause their problem? I will try the hot peppers.

Neal, go to the home page. There are lozenges made with hot peppers and it is referred to as capsaicin. The same thing in Zostrix used for arthritic joints. As for their efficacy, there is published evidence to suggest that longer term use of the capsaicin does actually ease this lingual sort of pain. It works by deadening the nerve endings to transmitter P which is basically the chemical equivalent of the pain ( but not killing taste) . Read about it on the HOME PAGE LINK above. You can buy these candies at a number of places and there is an address that you can order them right in the link. D

   Hey everyone,

Another attampt to glean ANYTHING on my tongue issue. One day I found white patches on my tongue. I freaked out for a few weeks, trying everything, diet, mouthwash, gintian violet, anti-candida everything. Eating better really boosted my immune system, but although the white patches went away after a month, the tip of my tongue still has this problem.

ok, here are my symptons EXACTLY. I have burning tongue, and the surface if a little rougher than before, and generally more sensitive. But I get a tiny sore (starts always at the tip, which slowly grows to the size of a dime or so (it spreads) and then blends in (the process seems to be about ten days), then repeats itself. This has been happening for 6 months now. If I eat no sugar, I may be able to curtail the speed of the process some (I think) I have tried a full course of a wide spectrum antibiotic, 3 types of antifungals, and lots of homeopathic stuff. If I have systemic candida, then I have no other problems but my tongue, because I feel great. This site is the first I ever considered nerve issues, or blood flow issues.

I am wanting to try the hot peppers. I want real peppers, not some pepper pill. So, does anyone know the best way to take them, how many, how often, especially the guy above who mentioned hot peppers. I once had a bad acid reflux problem (i think it was acid reflux, one never knows, my gastro was useless) and I got better shortly after taking amounts of garlic and cayenne chopped into a teaspoon of warm honey, so I have some possible faith in peppers. Since I am not a hot pepper person, I want to know how to prepare and eat them, and what might be best to release the cyasine (or whatever the stuff in them is that may help nerve issues in the mouth. For now, I have just learned to live with it.

By the way, I have been to a gastro (who said "the papilae on the front of your tongue look inflamed, you need an ENT), an ENT (who said, here take HCL (hydrochloric acid) and Betaine, which actually really gave me lots more energy, worth a try for any of you, get info on internet) , a dentist (who asked me if I had AIDS (not), then gave me antibiotics)which didnt hurt or help, and a candida speacialist (who wrote the book BACK TO HEALTH A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO YEAST CONTROL named DR REMINGTON, they did some wierd homeopathic stuff, charged me a lot to look real close at my blood cells, and told me its hard to tell if its yeast or not). Basically, they were all fairly clueless. I wonder what the MAYO clinic knows about this stuff.

Feel free to ask me any questions, or give me ANY suggestions. I have done 100s of hours of research.

Larry, go to the home page and surf the links. There you will find the capsaicin candies. There is a number to call ( I called) and this shop in NY (if I rememeber correctly) makes them special recipe double dose and they are not expensive. They are strong and hot and if I were you I would be careful experimenting with 'real peppers'. Some of them are so hot they can cause damage themselves. There is a recipe in the link to make them yourself and then you can be the judge of how much is right for you. Hope they help.

   Hot pepper work.
I posted message 12 a few days ago and after reading the earlier messages I started putting Pastene Crushed red peppers on everything - sandwiches, scrambled eggs etc. I found they gave immediate relief and after just a few days my tongue is pink and feeling fine. I am going to keep eating them -- I like them anyway. Maybe it was just a happy coincidence, maybe it will come back, but after dealing with the burning tongue for nearly two months, I am glad to get a respite and hopefully a cure. Good luck to all

I am really glad to hear when someone gets better without taking drugs which can negatively effect your whole system. Just be careful when you are cutting or handling hot peppers, never touch your eyes with out washing your hands very well!

I have been having a problem with burning tongue with a white coating on it. The inside lining of my mouth also have a burning sensation. Foods seem to make no difference, that I have noticed. My internest gave me several medications and nothing worked. I just saw an ENT specialist and he had a compound make up that I am rinsing my mouth with for the past 3 days, so far no noticeable difference. He did state that stress is often a cause, and I am under much stress right now. My husband is recovering from major back surgery, Mother-in-law in process of being moved to nursing home, Dad just diagnosed with Alzheimers and youngest son, Capt. in Army preparing to deploy to Iraq. If stress is a factor I am assuming this is the cause of burning tongue for me.
Good luck with your resolution.

   Hi Roberta,
Check out the forum on Burning tongue syndrome. If you ave no recent dental work, it can arise for no known reason and I have read menopause can be a factor. Have you been on antibiotics lately??

I had root scaling in the lower left quadrant of my mouth and the hygentist hit my nerve bad. The left side of my tongue is still completely numb after 12 hours, I am afraid she did some damage. Anyone have any advice on what to do or what I can do to recover? I will definately call my dentist tomorrow and complain!

   Tracy,

Sorry you are hurt like this. Give yourself time to recover. It can be a slow process and frustrating as you heal. Keep searching for info from your dentist. You will also find a great deal of info and support on this site.

Did you call your dentist? What did he tell you? Are you having any signs of recovery. Tingling or an increase in feeling? Anything?

T

My tongue is still numb after almost 3 days. At the end of the day when I am tired etc, I can feel the swelling into my sinus behind my eye. My dentist gave me a prescription for steriods (on adivse of an oral surgeon) which I am a bit weary of taking and will wait one more day before I do so. Ibuprofen helps for a bit. Any other suggestions?

Tracy, you are very early into your injury so what you are feeling is to be expected. I don't want to say "normal" because this isn't normal and can be scary not knowing what will happen.

I don't think the dose of steriods that the doctor gave you should cause you any problems. Usually these are given for a short period of time and you just need to follow the dosing instructions. That is what I had to do for my son when he had a bad reaction to poison oak. It didn't hurt him at all, but helped him. It is your choice to take it or not, but there are some that believe it can help the swelling. I think I would have taken it if given the opportunity. I would go on line and read up on this medication and talk to your doctor about your concerns.

I find applying heat to my face helps with my pain and I also like to go into the shower and have the hot water run on my face. You my find this helpful or maybe an ice pack will work better for you. Experiment and see what works. I also found that when tired I have more pain too. Get as much rest as you can and baby yourself. Allow your body to heal and post your progress.

Good Healing

   Roberta,
God bless you. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Talking to Jesus has been the biggest stress reliever I've ever found.
I'm happy to find this sight, because I burned my tongue on really hot tea a little less than a week ago, and it still feels like I just burned it. It's red and bumpy on the tip, and I've got the white coating too. This happened to me once before, and the condition went away by itself in a few weeks. Hopefully it will again. It's good to find out I'm not alone, and not crazy! Thanks for possible solutions, and for sharing what doesn't work too.

I also had some dential work done approx. 1 month ago and then again 2 weeks ago. I actually went to my doctor for a sore throat where he gave me antibotics. During the next 10 days all the symptoms appeared. The white tongue the sore tongue and the burning in the back of my throat became worse. I was scared that I was very, very ill, and that maybe I had cancer in my mouth or my throat. The white tongue was getting worse day by day and I was afraid to go to the doctor. I felt that the doctor was going to give me some bad news. Let me tell you that I had some very sleepless nights filled with nightmares. Keep in mind that I have had family members did of cancers that started first in the mouth and then moved on to other parts of the body. I finally went to my doctor yesterday and he told me what I have is a bacterial infection, and gave me a prescription for BIAXIN. I will say that the white is almost gone and I fell a little bit better. I can not eat peppers or any thing that is hot I never could. Sure hope this helps.

Can someone help me to understand my problem. This happens at night, mostly when I am falling to sleep. I get an extreme sharp burning pain on the right side of my tongue about 1/2 inch up from the tip. I lose sleep because just as I start to fall asleep, it repeats itself. It seems I usually have 3 or 4 episodes before they stop. The next day my tongue is sore. There are also occasions where my mouth will snap and I bite my tongue. I wont go to the doctor because I dont want to take medication that will cause side effects as most do.

If anyone suffers from this similar problem, please enlighten me on a thearapy that has worked for you. The pain is tremendous and I am awakened yelling from the pain.

Sharon

Sharon, I dont know, but have you had any dental work lately?
I have a sore half of my tongue but it came after my lower wisdoms were extracted under general anas so mine is caused by a nerve injury.
I hope it stops for you soon, as it sounds bad if you wake up screaming. best of luck

I have EXACTLY the same symptoms. I have had a root canal, and when the injection was being done, I had an extreme pain like an electric shock in my mouth.
2-3 week later I noticed the same white coating , a lot in the back and a little in the very front of my tongue. My tongue is a little numb, not able to taste . I have soreness in the tip. And some dry mouth. The roughness of the top of my tongue is hurting the upper gums too.
I have been suffering for 2 months, but it is not as bad as it was originally. ENT doctor prescribed "Magic Mouthwash" but I am not sure if it helped or not...The white coating and the numbmness is still there although a little less than it used to be.
Relieved to see there are others, worried to see there are people who have suffered for almost a year.

I have also had a white coating on my tongue as well. It all started about a year and a half ago. I got sick quite a bit, then i developed a sore throat that wouldn't go away. I have a very sore tongue and occassionally the roof of my mouth gets sore. I still have the sore throat, and it i have a lot of pain in the corners of my mouth/throat and ears whenever i swallow anything even spit or water. So I basically have a constant sore throat followed by a sore tongue, sore corners of the mouth by the ears, and a white coating on my tongue. I've seen the doctors a million times and taken a million different prescriptions all which have had no success. I've had a tonsillectomy, taken Nystatin oral suspension, every penicillin that i know of, amoxicillin, penicillin, tetracyclene, too many to really remember, every time i see the doctors they prescribe something different which means they have no idea what the problem is. Does anybody else have this condition?

   >I too just had four of my wisdoms pulled. All went well, but my tongue seems to be partially numb. My ears seem to hurt alittle. I do exercise my tongue.. alot of movement.. to try to get it jump started.. to get tingling.. it works sometimes.

Think positive, and believe in the power of prayer. My doctor said that it was a damaged nerve. I immediately stopped taking the pain RX, to take full control of what I was feeling. Tylenol seems to sooth the soreness.

Will write back if I ever get full feeling / sensation.

It's really annoying..to only have partial feel on the tongue.. we take alot of things for granted.. don't we?? )

I AM GLAD TO SEE THAT IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS THIS PROBLEM. I TOO HAVE THE WHITE COATING ON MY TONGUE, MY DOCTOR DIAGNOSED AS GEORGRAPHIC TONGUE AND WANTED TO PUT ME ON ANTI-DEPRESSENTS. I TOLD HIM I WAS NOT DEPRESSED. I THEN WENT TO AN ENT AND HE SAID IT WAS THRUSH. TOOK THE NYSTANTIN AND DIFLUCAN (ENOUGH NOT TO HAVE A YEAST INFECTION FOR SEVEN YEARS) THE MEDS ONLY MADE IT WORSE. WENT TO THE ER MY TONGUE AND UPPER MOUTH WERE BURNING SO BAD, SHE RAN ALL BLOOD WORK AND DID THROAT CULTURE ALL NEGATIVE SO I KNOW IM NOT DYING. SHE HAS SUGGESTED THAT I SEE A DIGESTIVE DOCTOR TO RULE OUT ACID REFLUX, SO I AM SCHEDULED TO HAVE THAT DONE, THE DOCTOR SAYS IT COULD BE A B-12 DEFENCIENCY CALLED PERNECIOUS ANEMIA, E. PYLORI WHICH IS A BUG IN THE INTESTINES OR ACID REFLUX. I TOO HAVE THE TINGLING SO I THINK SOME OF IT COULD BE NERVE DMG FROM ALL THE MEDS THAT I HAVE BEEN ON OVER THE PAST 4 MONTHS OR SO. HE GAVE ME A B-12 SHOT AND IT LOOKS ALOT BETTER BUT STILL HAVE AREA OF WHITE ON THE BACK OF THE TONGUE.I HOPE THAT THE DOCTOR DOES FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS BECAUSE SOME DAYS I DONT EVEN FEEL LIKE EATING OR DRINKING ANYTHING.

I started with a furry feeling in my tongue which spread to my throat. This tingles and feels like it is all ulcerated and I sometimes feel a lump when I swallow. My tongue went reallt sore and rough, then dry and crusty I was allergis to a mouth wash apprently if you have alchol in your maouth wash it can aggrivate the condition. My tongue is still white now and the throat still sore I am going to be referred to the ent so I f I find anything out I will let you know.

Wow, i thought i was the only one experiencing this "tongue problem". I didnt realize up untill now, that i didnt have this problem until i got my wisdom teeth removed. Which was about 2 years ago. I also was treated with enough Diflucan and (Oral lozengez) to not have a yeast infection for several years!! But yet its still the same. I had gotten my tongue pierced last year and thought that my fresh piercing and the intake of beer caused the yeast infection, but it never went away. I go through rough times where sometimes it hurts and becomes a little numb with extreme cold beverages, and others im totally fine, but there is always a white patchy film over it. I am releived to know other people are going through what i am.

I have had an off and on sore tonue for months and months ... maybe more and I am finally realizing that it hurts. It sometimes feels like the top of my mouth is blistered and actually like the tonuge is sprained. I sometimes feel like I get a single canker sore on the tongue. I honestly can't say I see anything white on the tongue. Is this something I should check with my doctor about. It really is very annoying and most people just look at me funny when I complain of a sore or sprained tongue.

White coating can happen after injectional injury but can also be oral thrush - fungal overgrowth/infection. I would see a doctor about it and nystatin for treatment, in case it is thrush - esp if you have sores that can be penetrated with the infection.

I may be off base, but you need to see a doctor to rule this out first.

Good luck
Joanne

I recently had a visit to the dentist to fill cavities. The number of shots he gave me of novacaine seemed excessive ( 4 I think?) Everything went fine except for my tongue. I don't have the white patches everyone talks about. I got a head cold about a week and a half later and received antibiotics. Then I developed canker sores. I thought that maybe the tongue issue was related to that and took vitamin B complex, biotin, and lactobacillus acidophulus. Canker sores disappeared but tongue issue has not gone away. Feels slightly numb at the front, I can feel slightly raised tissue when I rub my tongue against the roof of my mouth. I can see small raised red bumps at the front of my tongue. It feels like it has been burned and tingles at times. Citric acid does seem to irritate it.
I would like to try the hot peppers (jalapenos). Yet if soda irritates it, would the peppers also? I'm tired of my tongue feeling this way.

Hello: Go ahead and use the Hot Pepper mouth rinse. I use it several times a day. Although the taste is hot it will take your mind off of your other pain. I have lived with sore tongue, mucousal area pain, cheek twitches and left ear pain for 13 years. All the doctors can say is it's interesting. The only thing that helped me was 3 mg. of Clonazapam daily. Unfortunately I became addicted to it and had to go into withdrawals to go off of it. I wish I could find another drug similar to Klonipin/clonazapam. Take care and God Bless you.

   Hi
Just receintly I received a novacayne shot on the bottom right side of my jaw. As soon as that needle was given I felt my tongue go numb and it has not changed much. My dentist was aware of what happened he said he must have hit a nerve. Unfortunally he said there is nothing that can be done about it. The nerve has to heal itself. It is going on 3 horrible weeks and I am not much better. He seems to think it will take at least a month to get back to normal. I can't drink anything hot without feeling the pain. Can't eat citrus fruit. I always feel thristy but no matter how much water I drink it still feels the same. I receintly started to brush my tongue with senseodine (can't spell) tooth paste. It makes my tongue feel refreshed. It hasnt helped with the numbness. But maybe.

   Hi Ricky,
I am sorry to read that you are going through what most of us are.
I have had the same injury (my story is posted on this site).
It's been now almost 8 weeks and I tried possibly everything (medication, etc.) that anyone ever posted on this site and no change so far.
I have good days and bad days as everyone else.
I am pretty strong and positive woman, but this experience has changed my life a lot.
Lucky for me, my family doctor is very supportive and is helping me trying anything.
He reffered me to neuro surgeon, my appointment is next week and he is also setting up appointment with the Physicion at the Hyperberic Oxygen Therapy Clinic at Toronto General Hospital, to consult, if I would qualify for that treatment.
I will post all my experience back on my site, if you are interested to see my progress, if any.
Good Luck to you with your healing!!!
Vlasta

Hmmm...I have a LOT of these symptoms but I havent been to the dentist. Mine just "Started" one day about 7 months ago.

It started as a tingling sensation in the BACK of my tongue. It wasnt all the time, started out maybe one or two days a week. Then it went away for a week, then came back. Finally it got to the point where I had the sensation all the time AND the sensation grew to "all over" my tongue.

Also I have trouble swallowing sometimes. I feel like I have a lump in my throat on occassion. Another item....I've had a "Sore" spot on my tongue sometimes as well...kind of like a canker feeling sore but its just a small red dot...but it goes away after a day or two.

As I type this the left side of my tongue feels ICE cold.

This is all TOO weird.

Just wondering if Larry's tongue is any better these days?

I have just been reading the messages on this site as I have very similar symptoms to Larry. I have had a sore tongue since having a very "bodged" root canal 2 years ago! My tongue and gums tingle from mid-morning onwards and I have sores on my tongue which start as small and red and gradually grow to cover about a quarter of the tongue before healing. Then the cycle starts again! I have seen various docs who say that it's nerve damage and I should notice some improvement in about 6 months but I'm not holding out much hope.

Any news, Larry? Or does anyone else have any ideas? Can I get hold of the hot pepper candies here in the UK?

this burning tongue forum is very interesting. For about two months, ending about two months ago, I chewed Altoids cinnamon gum constantly. It's very strong, and after I chewed it my tongue was sore and my sense of taste changed. the problem is, it's two months later and I still have an odd, almost metallic taste and the first 1/2 to 1 inch of my tongue is very sensitive. there are what looked irregular bumps scattered across that area that look like tiny flattened stones surrounded by gravel. Anybody have any ideas? I'm at my wit's end.

I read on some other website that artificial cinammon flavor could trigger mouth and tongue sores. Don't know if that's what's in the Altoid gum or not.

I consumed a LOT of Altoids last week, and now have tongue sores after years of being without them.

I had little white spots appear on my tongue near the tip and on the sides. they would come and go seemingly random.
I experimented with not eating certain things over the course of 2 months or so. i managed to get them to go away, only for them to come back a week later.
I then traced my thoughts back to when they first appeared. My friends cam over from England, and we all had cinnamon altoids. i then got the spots on my tongue. i stopped eating them for a week as we were in florida, and the spots went away. when we returned, we had some more altoids, and the spots cam back.
after figuring it out after 2 months of thinking and testing, i haven't had an altoid, and haven't had any more spots.
I agree with the earlier posts, stop eating altoids!!
The other thing i would recommend, don't pick the spots. i had a cut like line on my tongue were i had started to attack them. stop the altoids, and they will shrink away. hope this helps.

Wow, who would know that so many people are experiencing this problem. Too bad no one knows a cure or what really causes it!!!

I have not had any teeth pulled so I don't think mine is due to nerve damage. It has even gone away on some occasions (usually for only a couple days). Similar to Jennifer I started to experience a slight dryness or tingly sensation on the back of my tongue. This was about 4 months ago. In the past 2 months it has gotten worse to the point of feeling like it is burned. Sometimes the roof of my mouth feels the same way. I think it may be to stress since I am handling a complicated project. My entire tongue burns and often is coated with a white coating. Sometimes it even looks yellow. The pain usually gets worse throughout the day. My doctor looked at my tongue and said he saw nothing but a tiny canker sore which he ruled was causing the problem. I probably should not have brushed my tongue that morning.

Just recently I have noticed that it got much worse the day after I had two beers which leads me to believe that this could also be candida (thrush). I am going to reduce my sugar and yeast intake by avoiding bread, soda, beer and wine. I am also beginning to take the supplement, acidophilus. I will let folks know if I see any changes.

In the meantime I will start adding hot peppers to my food and stop eating all those Altoids.

Anyone else with any ideas? Good luck to everyone.

It has been over 2 years since i had extensive oral surgery and several crowns which were the result of damage to my permanant teeth via an injury as a child while my permanant teeth were forming. I had several injections to the roof of my mouth (deading agent), which partially paralized the nerves and upper saliva glands and my the top side of my tongue). I have no saliva comming from my upper glands; however, the bottom ones still work. It has not been pleasant having such an extremely dry mount all the time. I have discovered that using "Biotene" toothe paste and mouth rinse helps. My condition has improved a little, but I fear that the white film on my tongue (caused by dryness) will always be there. There are many things I cannot eat or drink because it makes it worse (sodas, coffee, tea, fruit, fruit juices, etc...anything with acid).

Have you found anything that helps?

   Hi everyone!
I have a 5 month old baby who has patches on her tongue. they are not white but look like they were blisters that the skin has come off of. I of course, took her to the doctor and he told me she has geographical tongue and that i shouldnt worry about it....but i am. it seems to go in cycles like some of you have described and after reading all you have had to say, i am now concerned that she is, in fact experiencing some amount of pain. I was starting to think it was an allergy since i cant seem to feed her anything other than rice cereal (pablum) without her becoming very "pukey". Anyhow, you have all given me more reason to believe that I should be looking into this much further! and of course, she has not had any dental work done in her life!! any response would be appreciated.

Hi I'm sorry I dont have the answer to your baby's geographic tongue; have you looked the term up on the net? I am going to buy Biotene mouth rinse and gel today to help with the awful dry mouth feeling I have from lower wisdom teeth extraction causeing nerve damage. Maybe the gel would help your baby? Have a look for it in the chemist, & ask your Dr about it before try it?
Wishing everyone pain free healing. I know how frustrating this is..

The reason I am on the net this morning is because I was chewing Altoids cinnamon gum last week and have a severely painful tongue now and bumps toward the tip of the tongue that feel like glass is cutting my tongue. As of last night, the bumps are now on the roof of my mouth as well. My husband developed a sore tongue from the cinnamon Altoids a few weeks ago, but it went away. I am really upset! Will read the other posts on this subject. (BTW, I had all 4 impacted wisdom teeth surgically removed when I was 23. I am now 53. I don't remember a sore tongue from that ordeal. For anyone who is interested, I have a fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome website at www.fms-help.com that has my story, 100 tips for coping, etc.

Oh boy, I can't believe there are others out there with this same problem. I first tried the cinnimon Altoids last Wednesday and by Friday my tongue had tiny bumps (like enlarged taste buds) all around the top front and sides of it. It hurts extremely bad, that glass analogy is exactly right!! I can't talk normal and forget about eating a meal. It's not like I chewed a lot of these things either. I just had one piece after lunch and another a couple hours later. Man, these things should come with a warning labels!!!

Hey I ate a whole pack of cinammon gum (Fire) and my tongue has been really sore since 3 days ago. I will never eat cinammon again, I am not sure what triggered this reaction. Something is not right with the gum. I don't think I have nerve damage.

   Hi,

Very interesting site. Every time I tell somebody I have a tongue problem I just get strange looks. About four months ago, I started getting sores on my tongue(I did have a crown put on around that time too). They start out as small and white and grow to about the size of a dime by the time they are done. The sores are usally red and bordered by a white edge. If I eat something they kind of rub off and they are always way worse in the morning. They seems to flair up worse with beer, pizza and other spicy foods. It's very frustrating because the condition appears to get better, but then, WHAM!, it comes back in a few days. Even when the sores are gone, my tongue is still very tender on the top and very red. The pain is always there, worse sometimes than others.

I've seen the doctors three times and they just dismiss it. They almost seem annoyed now. All she told me the first time was not to worry, it wasn't herpies. Very reassuring, thanks lady! Herpes wasn't a big concern of mine. They gave me the 'magic mouthwash', but it did no good. Even when the sores are not there , the front of my tongue is red and VERY tender. This is very strange, I feel healthy otherwise besides the usual aches and pains. I do have a minor sore throat a lot , but I've had those come and go for some time.

My dentist has tried to help from time to time, but he's clueless also. I can seem to control it SOMEWHAT by drinking only water and not eating really hot/spicy foods. But, even when I do that, it dosen't completely go away. Very strange, never had anything this frustrating in my life. I guess we take our tongue for granted until something like this.

Any advice or thoughts?

Thanks for you time,
Rob

   Hi Rob,
Welcome to the "tongue club".
Sorry to hear about your situation.
I know it's hard when nobody around you understand your agony.
I had to laugh when you said how the "medical profesionals" are getting frustrated with you.
You are so right!
Every time there is strange injury or disease and they don't know how to treat it, they just want us to disapear
I have had few of those blank looks and shaking heads in past 10 months.
My original story is here under "injectional nerve injuries" (back from december last year).
It's under my name, so you can read it (btw. no change since then)
Rob, my advice to you is, don't give up and try to see as many doctors as you can, till you find one that knows, how to diagnose and treat your condition. I lost lot of respect to the health system since my injury.
It took me nine months to find really good oral surgeon and it was like dream to have someone taking interest in my injury and trying to help me.
He is sending me for more tests, etc.
I know it's sad, but try to look for more information yourself. More research you will do, you will find, that you are more educated about your condition then your doctor is.
Stay on this site, you will find lot of information here and you meet people who can relate to your situation.
I hope you will get better soon!
Good luck !!!
Vlasta

Hi about 2 weeks ago (when I was on a diet) and trying to avoid eating too much ! I was eating a large pack of sugary sweets and sooking off the sugar and then spitting out the rest of the sweet (daft eh) thought I would end up with less calories.
what I seem to have ended up with is a very sore tongue , it started off my going numb in the left hand side and then on to feeling as if I had burned it like sometimes you do if your soup , coffee etc is too hot, i,ve ignored it as much as I can , and went to the doctors yesterday who gave me nystatin for oral thrush !
It does,nt look all that white to me , so I dont think it is thrush , but i,ll take the nystatin anyway in case.
the other thing I did was I was shouting at my kids and the part underneath my tongue seemed to get a bit of a jot, I wondered if maybe this was what was causing my condition , Its driving me scatty . can anyone help ?

Hi, Hope someone can advise me . About 2 weeks ago, my tongue went numb to the right hand side, and then the next day it started to hurt really sore (as if i,d burned it with hot soup) like everyone in life who probably have done that I know it usually heals in a day or two, but this has not gone awa. I think this could be one of two things
the first of which is I have been on a diet, and one day was craving sugar and ate a whole pack of sugary sweets, sooking of the sugar and nnot eating the rest of the sweet (daft huh)
the other thing was I shouted at one of my 3 boys and I felt like the bit under the tongue was stretched kinda funny.
I went to the doctors 3 days ago and he gave me Nystatin, it has,nt helped yet, so dont know if its Thrush or what
My tongue is white, but then my tongue quite often is.
Can anyone throw any light on this for me .

Thanks

Diane

possibly (if this is not connected to candida/thrush) the tongue etc. condition is a symptom of an anerobic bacteria living in the canals of the teeth, gum tissue, bone. The origin could be previous dental work or bacteria that entered via cracked or damaged teeth. if so, the original infection was never knocked out or/and the infection took root in the socket where a tooth was pulled and the gum tissue hcan't be detected with tests using samples of sputum, blood, mucous, etc. biopsy's detect them. they live and breed in 'unoxygenated areas". In all probability the "source" is comprised of a mixture of staph, strep, possibly A-(sore throat), anerobic bacteria (400 types), and wonderful hospital induced s aureus and communal or hospital induced MRSA. Point is, if it's not knocked out (oxgenated) then it will just spread to other parts of the head/body. don't you think? makes sense to me. septic. The american medical association acknowledged 4 yrs ago that infected teeth are a cause of heart disease, and recently root canaled teeth are being associated with the 'root' cause of fibromyalgia.

I couldn't believe reading others experiences as they described symptoms exactly the same as mine. A sore and burning tongue at the tip, with what looks like a small blister, all normal colour for about half an inch. Further back my tongue has a white coating up the middle of the tongue getting worse further back, the coating is often thicker further back. I have worried myself sick over what could be causing this and eventually went to the Doctors, who thinks it may be related to a vitamin deficency. Having blood tests to check - will let you know what turns up. Can't tell you how much it has helped finding you guys with exactly the same problem.

My story is long and very painful. I will give the short story. I had a BSSO (lower jaw advancement) done last April. When the DR was drilling the hole to place the screws in to set my jaw he drilled too far and severed both my lingual nerves.
My question is has anyone on the site had nerve damage or severed nerves with a BSSO? I haven't seen anyone, it seems most have had theirs injury with wisdom teeth.

Thank you for being here.

I have a similar story; red on the tip and then white ulcers appear on either side of my tongue. I'm going to check with chiropractor next.

I'm glad however to have partners in this. I have discovered that Singulair makes it worse.

My GP said it was a virus, not Herpes and recommends searing the spots with salt. Biotiene products help a little but not enough. What about Sjogrims Disorder?

   C Wigintin,
I knew someone who had Shogrins, her symtoms were drying eyes (had to use tear drop replacement to moisturize the eyes), and her lymph glands in the neck were very swollen. Don't know if it can involve the tongue or not.

Sjogren's Syndrome is a disease where the body destroys moisture producing glands. It affects the mouth by drying it up, you have little saliva, painful and swelling glands, and the saliva glands can get plugged. If you have sores and white coating it could be thrush and there are prescription medications for that. Eating yogurt helps, cutting down on sweets. The tip of my tongue gets sore and I use Biotene mouth gel, sometimes Mylanta on tongue. I also brush with a very soft tooth brush using Biotene toothpaste or Biotene mouthwash.
