"HOw long will this go on?"

I had my injection of novocaine 11 days ago...and have seen an oral surgeon. He mentioned it could take up to 18 months to go away! I still have the right side of my tongue numb, now it has nerve pain and some crawly sensation, and a burning feeling. It often feels swollen. I don't have a problem talking, but eating can be a challenge, especially if the food has a texture. How long have most people found that this lasts? I can put up with a few weeks, but 18 months! I too, like others, feel very cranky. I was sick at the same time with a sore throat, and then my tongue swelled, and I felt like I had swallowed ground glass. Now the sore throat is better, but my tongue is still painful and numb at the same time. I have taken tylenol, but was not recommended to do the steroids or vitamens. beth

   Beth,

Sorry you are dealing with this mess. It can be very difficult learning to live with this injury, but the odds of getting better are on your side.

If you are having pain I would go to my general doc and see what is recommended to help you. My doc put me on Neurontin and Effexor and Ultracet to help control the nerve pain. Tylenol isn't sufficient to control nerve pain. It is helpful to control the injured nerves impulses and that is were the antisiezure and antidepressant meds come into play.

I feel taking vitamins can't hurt you and might even help your healing. At least eat a well balanced diet so your body has the nutrients it needs to heal. There is reshearch that shows that methyl B12 helps nerve healing.

Good luck with your healing and hang in there until then.

Teresa

   Beth,

The nerve pain and crawly sensations, and a burning feelings you are having can be good signs of healing. The swollen feeling is also something many others have felt when their tongue is numb from an injury like yours.

Nerves heal slowly and it can be very frustrating dealing with this. It is important to stay positive, but it can be a roller coaster ride of emotions. Try to deal with your injury a day at a time and don't look too far out into the future because it can put you into a depression. Also, it can help to keep a log of your symptoms so you can look back at how you are healing.

Even though the pain can be a sign of healing it is important to control it because it can become chronic if not controlled.

Teresa

   Hi Beth,

Did you have sore throat the same time when you had your injection or after.

That is my fear what will happen if I get sick, because I haven't been sick for long time, so I am due to get flu this winter for sure.

I am trying to avoid cold days outside and I try to stay from crowded places so I would catch anything.

The worst is, I am repeating my visits to family doctor, where else better then catch cold, then in his waiting room, right?

Beth, I also agree, that your "crawling sensation" is most likely good sign.

That was one of the good things my OS said, that ones you feel tingling sensation, that means the healing process is starting.

I wish you, that it will be speedy recovery for you!

Vlasta

I am afraid I have not healed in 5yrs. It all began with the crawling, burning/buzzing, along with the pain. I was told that I don't have any nerves in that part of my head and to let it go.
I was then abandoned by the dentist and now I have been assured by several top neurosurgeons and other nerve specialists that I will be dealing with this very debilitating injury for the rest of my life.
Hope they are wrong and sorry for this news--it certainly doesn't mean others won't heal. Just get to the neurologist right away. You need to get on medication asap--don't let anyone stop you. Trust me, when I finally did get into see the oral surgeon (which my dentist pointed out specifically that he would not send me to him)
he assured me that he would have had me to the neurologist right away--too late for me. Please if it feels like nerves, don't hesitate-GET IN TO A NERVE SPECIALIST!

   Hi Perl,
I also believe seeing neurologist asap is necessary.
I called my specialist today to put me on cancelation list for any time a day.
I am booked for may and I don't want to wait that long.
I hope your prognossis is wrong and that you will heal soon.
Good Luck
Vlasta

Wow, the thought of not healing for five years is terrifying. My tongue has actually started to feel a bit better. I get sometimes some sharp stabbing pains, and then the whole thing feels less numb. The oral surgeon said that these sensations are all parts of healing. I have had occasional days ( in the last week) where after it seems better that I wake up and my tongue feels like it has a sore lump in the middle of it. My mouth feels very dry and it seems even a bit hard to speak a lot. But then it improves. Today it is the best it has been in 15 days, since it happened. Right now I have the crawling sensations and only the tip and right side are numb, as compared to the whole right side and underside. It also feels less sore. But I am not convinced that improvement is linear, because I have had the days of decline after the better days.
Pearl, did you have a nerve severed? Why would it not be better after five years? My oral surgeon suggested that it can take up to 18months for it to go away, but that it usually takes a month or so. Beth

Sorry to not have responded about the sickness. I only got sick with a sore throat after this happened. My husband had a sore throat , and then I got it. But the sore throat and sore tongue definitely exascerbated eachother. It was pretty horrific for a few days there. beth

I had two fillings replaced on Jan. 13 '05 and the numbness from the anesthesia remained for an unusually long amount of time. Now, five days later I am still unable to taste food on the right side of my tongue (side of upper and lower fillings and aneesthesia). I was never warned that this could happen, and have had many other cases of dental anesthesia in my life without any problem. My dentist initially suggested that it was not related to the dental work, then backed down when I said it was definitely correlated to the procedure. He was very unsympathetic as he stated it could be days or months before it went away.
I am interested in pursuing this with a professional in the medical field to find out exactly why this happens.

My dentist too was very threatened when I told her what happened, and kind of minimized the impact of what it is like. I went to an oral surgeon who explained that she had pierced with her needle the lingual nerve and injured it, so that the nerve has to reconnect, and regenerate. It is damaged and inflamed, and that is what gives the numbness and nerve pain, and all the other weird symptoms. I understand it, but can't find anyone I know who has had it happen and can give me an idea of how long it takes to recover. The OS said up to 18months. yikes. beth
