"Pain with Root Canal and numbness in chin & lip"

I'm very glad to have found this website because it has answered a number of questions for the problems that I'm experiencing. Half the battle is fear over not really understanding what is happening. This site has helped me with dealing with this fear. My pain started after a crown was placed over a broken tooth (#31 - lower right) on Feb 23. I did not have any problem with the broken tooth other than it was sharp, there was no hot/cold or sensitivity. I believe it was a healthy tooth, though the dds said another piece of the bicupid was about to break off. After the crown, I felt pain throughout my jaw, from the ear to the chin. When it did not go away, the dds prescribed antibiotic and hydrocordone and said I needed a root canal. This procedure was done on March 21. My pain has worsened in my jaw, there is swelling under jaw, almost feels like a gland. And the bone under the area of the root canal is sensitive to touch. My ear hurts and my lip and chin are partially numb. There is a swelling behind my top front tooth that is sore like a boil or cancer sore and a cancer sore like on the inside of my top lip. The dds prescrib3ed clindamycin and hydrocordone. From reading previous messages, I believe there is some nerve damage that probably began after the crown experience. I will go back to dds with suspicon of this damage and find out where to go from here. But in any case it doesn't look like it's going to get better any time soon.
My question is what is best treatment short of pain medicine to alieviate pain for both topical sores and jaw pain. And what may be outcome of future course of action?

The numbness means that there is some nerve injury, but the other features of your story, such as the sores, makes it sound like there are other issues too. It may be that there is an infection that involves the nerve, or other issues.

If you do not feel the dentist understands the problem, then I would advise seeking a second opinion from another dentist or oral surgeon.

Thanks for the reply. The sores have gone away, probably stress related. Dentist said it was viral unrelated to anything else going on. The chin, lip and gum numbness continues and is spreading slightly from chin area to molar (or back of mouth) almost to where root canal was performed. Dentist is confident condition will correct itself since it is only partial numbness. I have some sensation and hot/cold sensitivity. I still am taking IBP but have been discouraged to do so, but need something for continued jaw pain. Would you recommend seeing oral surgeon or waiting it out another week. It has been 10 days since root canal. MSC

I am uncertain whether the nerve injury was due to the injection for the root canal, or from the root canal procedure.

I am not sure the oral surgeons will be of much assistance in this case. They usually deal with damage during tooth extraction when the nerve gets cut. I have not seen much on them helping in cases of damage from root canal. They usually do not recommend any intervention in damage that results from injection.

10 days is still a short time, it is reasonable to wait and see if it recovers. Taking B-complex vitamins would be about the only thing I can think of that I would consider doing at this point.

Thanks for writing back. I've been pain free since Saturday and have not taken any over-the-counter or any other pain pill. I'm happy of this. I guess its getting better and I'm grateful. I'm still partially numb in my chin. I could live with that, if necessary. The gum around the new crown is sore and the tooth is not settled yet. I have a follow=up tomorrow.
