"Burning Tounge after dental injection"

Well, after looking at all the posts, I too am part of the population that got screwed by a dentist. I am unable to get numb on the lower jaw unless I have 5-6 injections. This time, after a cavity was filled, I thought my tounge was numb. The dentist said it would go away after a couple days. Well, the numbness went away, however, I now have this buring sensation on the surface of the tounge to the tip. I too notice it subsides in the morning, but gets extremely worse during the day. My dentist gave me a rinse of Benadryl, Maalox, and lidocaine, which really doesn't work that much. My mouth is also very dry. I use a mouthwash called Biotene (over the counter) which helps oh so slightly (cools the tounge a bit), but nothing fantastic. I used a steroid rinse that the dentist gave me for two weeks, to no avail. I am now (after seeing my doctor) using a medication for a possible fungal infection. Still, no change in the burning sensation. Wow, what a hassle! Unfortunately, I had to go to the dentist, but how do we control this????
I will be seeing an EENT doctor in a couple months, but have no confidence this will get better. Each morning I wake up hoping it is improved.

If it takes you that many injections to get numb, your anatomy must be somewhat unusual, and this sets you up for an injury without the dentist "screwing" you. Read around this site, you'll get many good tips.

OK, so here is a point then. You state "your anatomy must be somewhat unusual". Shouldn't a dentist, after having injected a patient before, learn from that? I guess it's a moot point now, as the damage has been done, but it seems to me that if a patient goes a couple of times, receives numerous injections to get numb, that alternative procedures should be at least introduced? I still feel as if I got "screwed", that will not change.

Yes, they would know it was unusual, but not know if the nerve was higher, lower more to the sides or what. We don't have MRI vision.
You can feel however you want.

Dr B, I'd like to point out that although dentists obviously do not have MRI vision, if they know a patient is difficult to numb & needs lots of injections, the dentist would be wise to suggest the patient pays for an MRI scan of the area they wish to numb. This way they will know where the nerves are and be able to avoid them when they do the injections. I know this as I spoke to a radiologist who told me he often carries out requests from dentists & oral surgeons to MRI scan a patients oral cavity, so that the nerves can be avoided during the procedure.
Steve, I wish you all the best in your recovery; I understand exactly how upsetting it is to have a burning tongue as I have had one since my lower wisdom teeth were extracted under general and local anasthetic 16 months ago. You are in my thoughts.

Thanks much--great comments. I don't want to appear to people that I am disgruntled, as I used the word "screwed" in a general term, meaning I was a victim.....we are all victims of these things as we don't expect it to happen.
16 months with a burning tounge? Did it start out as a burning tounge, or numb? It is so irritating. Ice cream feels the best, but I can't always have ice cream in my mouth. What works best for you??
Any prognosis for getting better?

I have never heard of this being done for injection purposes. I do not even know of a GP dentist who can read an MRI, they are read by radiologists, or possibly an oral surgeon who would never be doing fillings. Even if it could be read, it would still be impossible to translate as to the anatomy in the mouth for practical purposes of injections. MRIs are used for diagnostic purposes for things like implant placement and planning orthognathic surgery but not injections.

Dr. "B"--I have read many (I mean "many") of your posts in all of the discussions, and you seem to know what you are talking about in this area (I'm not being a smart ass beleive it or not!!)
I have a lot of anger right now towards anyone that sticks needles in mouths, so don't take it personal!!
I have a consult with an EENT doctor next month (hard to get appointments). I also have a crown remaining that my dentist wants to finish. I don't want to do anything until this gets straight, but from what I see, it could be months.
If I do go to the dentist, can I ask for sedation rather than MORE injections???
I have also noticed today that once in a great while, I notice a slight tingling, almost like a little electrical current in the tip of my tounge...is this a good sign? (of course, it's only been a couple weeks...)
Temporary releif comes to me with gum, but only temporary.

Yes, that is most likely a good sign. You also may not need a shot to seat the crown, you should talk to your dentist about alternatives.
It is not unusal to be angry when one is injured, however, not every injection injury is due to negligent treatment.

Dr. B--yes, that is true. I guess that's just how life happens from time to time, and I should consider myself lucky my tounge isn't numb.
I have some old Oxycontin that I tired, (just one). That really helps the burning. First thing I have noticed that lends releif other than ice cream. Unfortunately, I know my doctor won't give me that for the burning sensation, as he will probably not want me to become addicted.
Is there any other pain medication I can ask for? (allergic to any asprin, anti-inflammatory, etc) But from what I have seen, they wouldn't provide any releif.

   Steve,

See if your doctor will RX Ultracet. It is a drug that has similiar actions as opiods, but doesn't have the same addiction actions. It is a combo med of Ultram and Acetametacen (sp). It helped my pain. There is a published report that states Ultram and Effexor combo helps control nerve pain. Maybe you could try something like this.

Sorry about this but I have to ask again: How can the dentist treat you for the pain caused by a procedure he preformed on you for months, all while telling you that you don't have any nerves that could be damaged and then finally decide that he has nothing to do with the pain and drops you like a hot rock? This happened to me and I now have a life full of drugs and pain. How is that? And again: Is it not negligent to refuse a referral to an oral surgeon, since the tooth was extracted and the endodontist would not be of any help? I am trying to sue for this, who thinks I have a case?
Thanks.

   Steve,

Read the treatment page for medications that may help you. Ususally an antidepressant and/or an antiseizure medication are RX'd. These meds are probably your best chance in controlling this burning pain until you recover. Nerve injury pain requires special treatments. Go to your family doctor and discuss your options.

Unfortunately, no matter what you do it will take time. Stats show that most people recover within the year after an injectional injury. Nerves heal slowly and if you take meds they take time to work too. It is a good sign that the numbness has already gone. There is still hope for relief and recovery, so don't give up.

Some people state that chewing gum helps stop the burning as long as they chew the gum. This might give you some relief. Also, you might want to try the capscian candies mentioned on the treatment page.

Take care and keep posting how you are doing.

I finally got in to see a Doctor at the ENT. My hopes of any help were pretty much dashed. As I told the Doctor, my Christmas present would have been to alleviate the burning pain. She listened, checked everything out, offered me amitriptyline (spelling not sure). First, she started me on Prednisone 60 mg for 5 days, but told me it probably wouldn't help. She wanted to try anyway. Guess I have to give an "A" for effort! The anti-depressent will be given at my request in two more weeks, after the Prednisone. However, I am thinking I don't want to be drowsy all day, I'll put up with the pain. Heres hoping to me that this problem goes away in a year.

Lois - you sound exactly like I did - all the same symptons. I insisted on seeing an Oral Surgeon and it was found I have HUGE problems in the TMJ joint and when he operated he said it was the worst he had seen in a very long time. Mine all started with a molar extraction. I still have a way to go healing but things are a lot better than they were. I used to have the most horrible headaches, neck, shoulder and back pain. All this pain due to the TMJ. You are going to have to be very STRONG and INSIST that you see a Specialist. Look up the sites on the net by just entering TMJ and you will find there is heaps of information which might help you. Best of luck and wishes for a healing 2006.
