"7 YEARS AFTER lingual nerve injury"

maybe someone's interested how one feels seven years after:

March 16, 2001 lingual nerve damage by injection at age 40. (while replacement of filling of a molar on the left side)
Partial numbness on the left side of the tongue

numbness disappears over a period of some weeks.
after this period feeling of a "burnt tongue" (like from too hot soup or so)

this "burnt feeling" is decreasing over a period of months
after one year (from 2002 on) , left side of the tongue feels like a "layer of lacquer"
two years later (2002 to 2004) same sensation, less dominant. (decreasing)

Today 2008: sensation of the tongue has been the same for years now: slightly unusual sensation of left side of tongue, taste seems to be normal. No pain! Recovery ist about 95 %

Greetings from Bern, Switzerland, R.B. Meier

Hello Richard,

Your testimony gives the readers, a good idea of what the road ahead might look like. You may not have fully recovered, but i find your story encouraging. Hey, 7 years post-injury, in my opinion, makes your testimony even more valuable. Thank you for sharing it.

   this is a good post..
good example of how different the nerve injuries are..
my lingual damage happened in november 2001 from wisdom tooth extraction..total numbness right side tongue and gum..tight clamp like feeling on my jaw..the burning tongue constantly with electrical shooting pains.. all which still lingers today but in a milder way..thank god..and not 24/7..
i regained feeling in the tip and back of tongue about 10 months later after repair surgery..the middle remains numb and my gum..and i can only taste food on the back of my tongue on the right..thats really strange...
after 15 doctors later and a pharmacy of drugs i feel lucky to be where i am today....

I have suffered with bms for almost three years. I sometimes feel like I am losing my mind. What course of treatment did you follow to get to where you are today? I don't think I can tolerate another 4 years of this. Any advice you could give would be greatly apprecciated. I am positively convinced mine started after about 7 injections that my dentist gave me for a routine filling. I wasn't even aware that nerve damage could be caused by this - I think dentists should be made to disclose that information. Thanks for any information you can give to me. Sandy U.S.A.

   skennison,

I suffer from lingual nerve damage and resultant paresthesia of my tongue, right side, from an injection of articaine 10 months ago. I know what you are going through... my symptoms are 10 - 30% improved, depending on the day. I can tell you what I am doing and what helped me the most. Every day I take Vit.B12 (5000mcg. sublingual methylcobalamin), Vit.B complete, Vit.C (4000mg), lecithin, and fish oil for Omega 3 EPA and DHA for nerve repair. I also take an antioxidant (Solgar Advanced). Therapy wise I use acupuncture for relief of pain and burning... and it does help. I treat myself because that is what I do professionally, however I highly recommed it for any nerve pain or repair situation. It's important to treat local points in and under the tongue itself, as well as distal points on the arms, hands, face, and even legs. Another technique that helped is hot salt water soaks... make some salt water (hot) and then wash your mouth out with it keeping it in the mouth (and touching the affected gums, tongue, etc.) for a couple of minutes, then spit it out. Do this 3 - 4 times in a row, it should help with the pain because of the hygroscopic effect of the solution... it will help to relieve inflammation including inflamed nerves. I also massage the area where my dentist injected me with my thumbs. This has also helped a bit. Someone is reporting good results using a micro-current device called the Alpha-Stim 100. Similar to a TENS unit but not the same... different wave forms. Just Google it. Good luck to you, me, and all who are injured. This injury is terrible, but time, and some therapy, will help in almost all cases.

Bob
