"What Should I Do Next?"

Yesterday I went to my new dentist for a cleaning and a filling repair. The filling repair was found to be necessary at my first consultation and by reading the XRays.

I have never had an injection in my mouth for fillings before. Only wisdom teeth.
So, of course, I was shocked by my experience. I was laying on the chair and told that they were putting topical on. After a few moments I realized that I was being injected.

I left the office with a good amount of numbness and discomfort.

Now, 16 hours later, the half of my tongue is still numb. I also have some tenderness and swelling under my jaw, on the left hand side. Additionally, I have extreme dry mouth.

I contacted the doctor, who met with me. I was told it was not all that uncommon, no big deal, yadda. "There's no reason you should be having dry mouth...should all go away in 2 weeks to several months..."

Is there anything else I should be doing???

The dry mouth is AWFUL.

Chewing gum or sucking on candy helps temporarily with the dry mouth. Mine gets so dry sometimes that I can't even lick a stamp, my tounge sticks to the roof of my mouth and my gums to my teeth. I agree that it is AWFUL.

LOL, I tried gum and almost chewed my tongue. Since I can't feel it!

Candy helped a little.

The dentist said he'd never heard of the dry mouth being caused by the injections.

jolly rancher hard candy or lemon drops can give temporary relief..i was prescribed a lozenger by the dentist to suck on,it was expensive and really only gave the same amount of moisture as the candy.i cant chew gum with my numb tongue either..if the numbness doesnt go away in the next day..go to another os..

This was from an injection given by my regular old dentist.
NOT oral surgeon!
I am thinking I should probably get looked at by someone else soon...

Don't you just LOVE it when the dentist says "no big deal... it should all go away within SEVERAL MONTHS." Oh how I detest these SOB's... how DARE they play russian roulette with our mouths and our lives. They have such a cavalier attitude... it isn't THEIR lingual nerves, THEIR tongues, THEIR alveolar nerves that are being damaged, oftentimes PERMANENTLY! It sounds like you have a paresthesia of your tongue with damage to the lingual nerve from the injection. Ask the perp what type of anesthetic he used... if it was Septocaine (articaine) you may be like this for a long time, possibly permanently. If you're lucky, it will resolve on its own within 3 months. Wait till you get burning pain and horrible taste sensations... now THAT will be hoot.... NOT! I'd love to take a carp of articaine and inject it right back into the sucker's mouth so they can feel what it's like. If the dentist used lidocaine your chances of recovery are very good... much better than with articaine. Some folks take up to a year or longer to recover... some never do. I'm going on 11 months with about 20% improvement overall. Some days are better than others, but at least I'm no longer contemplating terrible things (I'll leave it at that). Good luck to you... this site provides us with some outlet for our pain and there are good ideas for therapy if you look around.

   Bob,

in reference to your first point I am 16 weeks in, have mandible nerve damage and am now being treated by a Professor who is the Head of the OMFS department at the state's most respected university and who is very reassuring and caring. I saw him for a review on Tuesday and I asked him whether he thought my surgery was done less than properly. He nodded his head and made mention that he called the operating surgeon after my first visit and told me that he was in complete denial, and still believed that there was nothing wrong with me.

He is going to support me whether I sue the bastard or complain to the Head of the Medical board.

I've had a goodish weekend compared to the last few. Whilst I am happy with this Prof has told me that I am looking at a long recovery.....only at 8-10 months would we potentially look at any other invasive surgery, but he doesn't think it will be necessary.

Whatever you do, you DEFINATELY need to report to the state licensing board. I suspect that these boards will not take action if you have an outstanding lawsuit. Report him and stay on the board and wait to file the lawsuit, if you choose to do so. I got board action a year after my complaint..they slapped them on the wrists which is inexcusable in my case but atleast they did acknowledge that what was done was below the standard of care and considered gross negligence. Apparently in my state just being negligent does not result in action, it has to be GROSS negligence. Demonstrates just where their loyalties lie. I'm not done with the dental board by any means but on hold for now. MY ONE AND ONLY GOAL IS TO TELL PEOPLE WHAT I WISH SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME BEFORE THAT FATEFUL DAY THAT PERMANENTLY CHANGED WHO I AM. If the regulatory boards won't step up to the plate then I guess its up to us injured patients to do their job for them.

I was also fortunate that the doctors I saw cared more about me and are willing to stand up for me and therefore the rest of the dental patients that are put in harm's way with the game of Sargenti root canal roulette.

BTW, those 27,000 hits to THEIR sargenti website are not interested users of Sargenti paste, they are injured patients and their family and friends.

You should have been given a steroid prescriptio and a referral to an oral surgeon. Call Monday and ask for this if you are not having significant improvement.

DoubleShot, hopefully by monday youll have complete improvement...after all it was just an injection for a simple filling..dont let the others freak you out just yet..of course if it doesnt get better its gonna freak us all totally out !! keep us updated..
DR B, wouldnt you agree if DoubleShot has to call the dentist and ask to be treated with steroids thats a pretty lame excuse for a dentist ? i think DoubleShot should seek his/her own os for further evaluation screw the one who caused it.. what good did it do her/him calling back in the first place..just blown off like nothings wrong..normal outcome..YADDA, YADDA..
im glad i didnt take the advice of my dentist in the beginning of my injury 6 1/2 years ago..he simply said no one can help you with this little meaningless problem dont go anywhere..good thing i found you as my dental expert witness..you certainly made my injury case legit..i will remind you again..you are my favorite dentist on the site here.. i just saw your name pop up again in my recent court adventure documents..anyways good luck DoubleShot...

   Thank you everyone.

What bugs me most is that at no point was I ever informed that I would be GIVEN an injection. I opened my eyes to see metal in my mouth and was surprised. That on top of a numb tongue for 3 days now (and the numbness isn't bad, it's that BURNED sensation) I never ever want to see a dentist again. EVER.

I will see what Monday brings. If I am not better I had planned to see my primary car physician as I have a relationship with her.

If I went to a regular old "new dentist" would they tell me if the old dentist screwed up? Don't know how that all works.

did you sign a consent form that stated that nerve injury may result after the injection ? now you numbness is turning into the burning sensation ? that sucks....a regular dentist cant help you at this point..probably you wiil need to find a good oral & maxillofacial surgeon to determine the extent of the injury..none of us here are very fond of the dentist either these days..your primary doc. can prescribe meds to help make you more comfortable..check around this site we all are or were medicated...it wouldnt be a bad idea to call the dentist again who did this to you and let them know your still suffering and its for REAL..

It is a bummer that the dentist did not think to give the steriods in the first place, and an oral surgeon probably would recc it. There really is not usually written informed consent for injections, however, you should have been told you were going to have the injection.

My OS didn't even look at the OPG - merely read the referring note from the dentist, said it was a routine procedure and made me sign the form.

I think that cannot be classed as 'informed consent' now can it?

That is just the beginning with him......

I was not given a consent form nor told I would be getting injections.

I opened my eyes, and saw metal. That's when I new I was getting an injection.

I am going to see primary care today and see if she'll make the call to the DDS to find out which medication I was injected with.
