"I'm scared"

Hi...I am new here. i found this site today and a lot of you sound like what I am going through.I had a canine tooth pulled, which caused a jaw fracture. 4 weeks ago, I had a huge piece of my jaw bone removed. Since then I have had pain and burning from the site. I went to a facial doctor this week and she said I had irritated nerve endings. My problem is the pain goes up my nose and under my eyes. At times it is really painful. It is not a sinus infection, my oral surgeon took and xray and they are fine. The burning scares me. I know 4 weeks is early, but i am really scared

Hi and welcome to the forum...I totally understand that you're feeling scared. I was really scared too and I think we probably all were in the weeks following our injuries. For me, it was not knowing what was happening to me and why I was in so much pain and discomfort. My OS had made it sound like other patients had recovered from these types of injuries (IAN) with little problem...only a little numbness. As we all know, there is more to these injuries than a 'little numbness'. I was so scared that the pain was going to last forever...and, until I found this forum, I basically lived in fear and dread each day for weeks.

I can't imagine pain like you are experiencing..does it give you headaches too? Were the doctors able to give you any suggestions as to how to cope for the moment? I had severe burning of my lip and chin for several weeks...now it's much better and only seems to flare up when I'm tired or in very cold weather.

Please keep posting...all of us here who have been injured truly care and empathize with you...hoping that every day will bring a bit more healing and relief for you.

I haven't noticed any numbness. I feel burning and literally feel the nerve running upside my nose. At times that is twinky. The tooth next to the injury for weeks felt like wood, it now feels spongy. so, i think the feeling is coming back to it. I hope that is a good sign that this is not permanent.
My facial doctor gave me pain medication, but after reading the bottles and the side of effects of increasing the chance of a heart attack, bleeding ulcers, and deadly skin raches. No way.Seems like if there is a side effect I get it. I decided not to take that risk. My pysicaian gave antidepressants and they make me sick to the stomach. So, I gave up on them. Right now, I don't have the weight to be playing with. Advil was working but then I read not to take to much so I gave up on that too. I am just dealing with it.
IS the feeling of the nerve good. My facial doctors never said it was injured just irritated. Or is that the same thing. These questions keep going around and around in my head.

Word around this site is that the burning pain you are experiencing is a good sign of nerve healing.. A neuroma is the formation of scar tissue .. What kind of Dentist did this to you ?

When the burning pain on my chin started almost 1 week after my root canal, it was not a sign that the nerve was repairing but, instead, a sign that the damage was worsening. Maybe not the same situation...

I guess that's why i said word around this site ? Personally, myself, i never thought of that as a healing moment... But it sure seems like most of us nerve injured people get some degree of burning sensation somewhere ? Some worse than others it seems ? Probably depends on how damaged the nerve is as to how bad the burning gets and if it will get better... That's IMO... I only have a burning tongue from wisdom tooth extraction not a burning nose or lip ... All situations are different, that's for sure ..

My OS laughed a little and asked me why I thought I had an injury when I used that word in his office during the only followup after my surgery. I forget the word he used but I think he said my nerve was traumatized. Imo, whether the nerve is stretched, pulled, crushed, irritated or whatever else...there has been an injury of some degree to that nerve and that's what it should be called. I wonder if they don't like using that word because it may imply litigation in the future...kind of like the reluctance to say "I'm sorry"?

I can literally feel the nerves....it tickles in my face and my gums feel really itchy. The burning seems to start when I irritate the area like chewing. I don't know if I am healing or getting worse. I am so confused.
