"Sour / metalic taste"

Since my wisdom tooth extraction (one on lower-right) the right side of my tongue and gums have been numb. I had the extraction 3 weeks ago and just started to get a sour/metallic taste in my mouth (especially if I eat/drink anything sweet ). Is that normal, permanent, a sign of healing, or something else?

It's a sign that your lingual nerve has been damaged somehow.

   bowho,

Yes. I'm not sure if my chorda tympani is involved in my altered taste sensations/burning because of the following definition.

"Chorda tympani: A branch of the facial nerve (the seventh cranial nerve) that serves the taste buds in the front of the tongue, runs through the middle ear, and carries taste messages to the brain.

The chorda tympani is part of one of three cranial nerves that are involved in taste. The taste system involves a complicated feedback loop, with each nerve acting to inhibit the signals of other nerves. The chorda tympani appears to exert a particularly strong inhibitory influence on other taste nerves, as well as on pain fibers in the tongue. When the chorda tympani is damaged, its inhibitory function is disrupted, leading to less inhibited activity in the other nerves."

My altered taste comes from the back right portion of my tongue... I can actually taste it coming from that area. Also it is one of three cranial nerves involved in taste, the lingual nerve is also one of them, and burning can come from damage to any nerve, including the corda tympani, lingual, ian, etc.

My altered taste is on the back right side of my tongue too... Its the only spot on that side where i taste anything..sweet,sour,ect.. I have no taste on the tip or middle, im only able to feel the difference between hot and cold on the tip.. Thank god for that these days.. it was hell when i had no feeling there for over a year... Anyways it was my neurologist that told me the lingual nerve had nothing to do with taste sensation.. Of course he had NEVER seen anyone in my condition from a dental procedure nor my GP or 4 other dentists ... He did however for 300.00 (paid up front) write a letter for my attorney explaining that my condition was permanent from a dental procedure .. Enough time had gone by for nerve regeneration to take place in the first 16 months.. As far as the burning i was diagnosed with BMS from the GP.. So in reality im still confused .. All i know is what ive been told and gone through in the last 7 years ...

Did you ever get rid of your sour taste? I'm having the same issue on my bottom right side and it has been there since I got my wisdom teeth out years ago. I was wondering if you have any advice on what I should do about it?
