"Anniversary of Injectional Nerve Damage - 6 y"

It has been 6 years to the month since I sustained an injectional injury while being numbed for filling replacements.

My current status is that I do not have feeling on the left side of my tongue. I had developed a bad habit of biting on the affected side and now my tongue seems to have been affected by that action (an 'appendage' has developed as a result). I cannot taste on the affected side of the tongue. Apparently, the brain seems to adapt to this although my sense of taste has definitely been reduced. The tingling on the left side of my tongue has gone, but the excess salivation on the affected side is the same. One benefit of the loss of tingling on the affected side is that I am no longer inclined to chew on the tongue. However, since there is an appendage there now, I tend to work the left side of my tongue against my teeth making the area raw which doesn't hurt per se. When I catch myself doing this, I stop - but I have an unconscious urge to do it. I really wish someone could help me with this problem, but I feel that there isn't much hope for me.

I have not been back to the dentist that injured me since 2005. The dentist had forwarded my records to my new dentist (in the same town) on his own volition. I have mentioned the current issue to my new dentist and he has not offered up anything.

I still (occasionally) read posts on this site, but I am not sure I can offer any hope from my own experiences. I know what some of you are going through and it sucks.

Hi Numbtongue1, I have the same problem on the right side for 7 years now.. Did you ever have the vice grip feeling on your jaw or the burning tongue? I did regain some feeling in the back and tip of my tongue after a nueroma was removed, the middle remains numb.I only regained taste on the back of my tongue..

Sorry for not replying earlier - had some troubles 'logging in'.

The answer to the first question is - the anesthesia that I was given was Lidocane according to the Drs records and his answer when I asked him.

I had numbing in my jaw after the procedure (filling replacement) and my lip was numb for several weeks after as well. I had a nasty feeling like my tongue was burned. Now, I just have no sense of taste on the affected side and I have developed a 'flap' on that side of my tongue where I was chewing on that side while it was tingling. I can't seem to break the habit.
I have never regained taste sensation on the affected side.

Well isnt this special? All 3 of us here have lingual nerve damage from 3 different procedures..I was injected with lidocaine also for molar extraction.. Do you have taste or feeling on the tip of your tongue? good thing you regained feeling your lip!! You know that meant your ian was also injured? All because of a filling!! OMG..

I have feeling at the tip of my tongue. The feeling and taste are gone on the left side of my tongue. It is not like all the feeling is gone either - I can still feel some pain if I bite down on my tongue, but it seems as though a very specific area of the tongue is affected.
All because of filling replacements. When I first went to this dentist, he insisted that my amalgam fillings were 'bad'. I have siblings that still have fillings from our original dentist that are fine (30-40 years). This dentist said mine looked 'leaky' and over a period of several years tried to convince me to have them replaced. Then the hygienists started to try and convince me to have it done. I feel like such a dope because I knew better. When I finally agreed (by the way, he replaced almost all my fillings - 10 or so) - he injected me several times for each filling area he was working on. If the first injection for each filling area had resulted in him hitting the nerve, I would have winced and the dentist would have withdrawn the needle. Instead, the damage came during injection number 3 and I was numbed up and could only feel the 'zing' down my tongue.
Multiple mistakes were made here in my opinion. First, the dentist should not have been so insistent on replacing fillings and thereby risking injury to me. Second, the hygienists have no business coercing patients for procedures. Last, if the dentist had limited the number of injections, there might not have been damage.
My old dentist used to give 1 injection. If I needed more during the procedure, he would give another - but only if needed. Comparing my old dentist to this other guy (who I had nicknamed the 'gold digger dentist' because of his zeal to replace fillings), the older dentist had a 'finesse' about how he did things. Once he did hit a nerve on the first injection and he promptly withdrew the needle. There was no nerve damage from that procedure. Today, it seems as though the dentists are afraid of causing pain and want the area numbed to the gills. There is no 'finesse' about this gold digger at all. It's like the wisdom of old has been lost on these guys - and they will not admit to doing anything wrong. It is simply amazing. Did I mention that the gold digger dentist also teaches dentistry? He's perpetuating 'bad' in my opinion and there is nothing I can do to prevent future injuries to other 'not so informed' patients.
Depressing...
