Hey, are you OK ? I'm worried about you. I just got back from Iraq. I'm sorry it didn't go well for you. I was wrong suggesting it. I just thought it might give you some relief....Everything is not as rosy for me either now, post, 6 months Neurectomy. I do not have the pressure any longer in my jaw. The pain does not go over "10" into the 20's like it did. I do have the burning and I think my speech is screwed up, but, at least their is a cap to the pain. It gets to a 7 or 8 every now and then (that's on no meds). I was taking a serious dose of Narcs at one point and may just start taking 20mg per day to try and knock this thing down.....who knows? I have some new issues though.........I too have worn out my welcome so-to-speak with family and friends with me mentioning the pain.....After all, I had surgery, it was supposed to be "cured".............so now I have less pain were I'm not thinking every day of killing myself, but with the pain I do have, I own it.......it's gonna be kinda lonely....I just hope this thing doesn't mutate some-how. The anxiety is still there and the memories of how bad it was for 7 or 8 years are still in my mind. I can't go back to that........Chewing is kinda interesting....if I hit it just right, the pain is so severe that I dropped my fork a couple times.......everyone was staring at me and I just said, "sorry"....Talking is a totally new adventure.....after 5 at night, I would rather not talk....but, like I said, I bought this so it's mine now....In iraq, I took only motrin and some topical benzocaine during stressful situations, like being mortared and shot at.....I had a little bottle of benzocaine and a Q-tip on me at all times....I really hope you hang on Dawn. I really do. I hope everyone else is hanging on also. I thought about this site often but for some reason, couldn't sign on.........

I is a nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Dr. Donoff told me, "There are no downsides", he doesn't even fu$%%king want to talk to me or know my name. He simply does not care!!!!!!!!! I am sorry for you, but if this were happening I certainly would not have done the surgery, I specifically asked about my tongue and Donoff assured me that it would not happen. You never mentioned your tongue to me. I am very surprised and appalled to be reading this. I would rather be dead than have this happen, but I have 2 small children to be here for. I am sorry if this comes off as mean spirited but if this came up w/in the last month, I would understand. I specifically asked you and you said with all your heart to go for it and I never heard from you again.

I am so sorry for both of you but you can't beat yourself up for it. You did what you thought would work, what the doctors told you would help and you can't fault yourself for it. We think doctors know all the answers but sometimes we find out that they don't and you two are living proof of it.

I definately understand Medic Mike's comments about people not wanting to hear about it but they just don't understand. Its not your fault...don't beat yourself up, find others on this board who do understand. People who don't have this problem can not understand the pain that this is. Its a shame that we aren't all in the same area where we can meet each other face to face.

I still have a couple of coworkers, one sister and 2 other friends who I have found because of this who I talk to and who thankfully still put up with me. I have nothing to talk about except this situation that has ruined a career that I loved and changed who I am emotionally, physically, and financially...and what was done to me was intentional...if not the material used, then the coverup afterwards. I'm surprised that I'm still married.

Just remember that you have many friends from this board and if you need to talk to any of us, we will be here..either on the board or over the phone. If you need to rant, talk, cry, scream whatever, I am always willing to listen and give you a sympathetic shoulder....no matter what time of the day or night.

I'm so sorry for the poor outcome you've had with Dr. Donoff. It's shockingly irresponsible of him to drop you as a patient, and, if you feel you've been left without appropriate follow-up care from him, you may have a legal case for patient abandonment and should speak with a lawyer. MedicMike couldn't sign on because the site was down for awhile. None of us could. I don't know terribly much about internet service in Iraq, but I imagine it's pretty limited, as well. I hope that you see improvement and healing soon.

Doc, I had an Inferior Alveolar Nreurectomy done last August. I had 13 stitches under my tongue. I had them drill into the bone and cut that nerve. Initially, I had a crushed nerve and when they did the 3D CAT Scan, it showed the crushed tunnel that the nerve runs thru. I'm guessing that's the CT scan Dawn saw. I was injured for around 8 years so I didn't qualify for any of that "graft" stuff or any new meds, nothing, nada. I also had talked myself out of blowing my head off about 2 dozen times. The only thing that saved me was that one day I was sitting in my basement with a gun in my hand, tears running down my face and I looked up and saw both my dogs sitting there quietly in front of me. I saw that they were both scared. My heart just went out to them and THEY made me want to live for another day...........For the first two or three years I had this thing, I never told anyone. I used to take sleeping pills for nightmares (I've been a Paramedic for 20 years in three wars)....I was in so much pain when I got home sometimes at 7 at night, I was just so desperate, I'd pop a couple sleeping pills thinking "...man, please, God, just let me sleep"..........So Dawn, I know what pain is and I know suffering........Do you want to blame me for something ? That's cool. No problem. I have had mothers try to punch me because I couldn't save their kids killed in car crashes, so if this helps you ? Do it. Definitely............I will live and I will wake up in the morning and I will start over.

I had an increase in pressure in the left side of my jaw. I had pain on light palpation to the area, I had sensitivity to wind, even clothes brushing against my jaw............Now, I don't have the pressure, I do have some burning. My tongue is OK. Without the nerve, I do have some loss of control and when I hit it just right, some kick-ass pain..........I would choose this over the pressure I had.......I have and I will live with it. I guess I was luckier. I saw Dr's Dodson, Schafer, and Donoff about 6 times. I sat in Dr. Schafer's office for three hours with my wife and parents talking to him. He did not want me to have the surgery. He thought we could use a combination of non-invasive things to try and control it. When he spoke to my family, he eventually wrote me a letter stating that it was our only recourse.

Nope, right now, after 13 hours of work, the left lower side of my jaw is burning and my speech feels slurred............I'll use an ice pack, take a benzo to sleep, and try and crash for a few hours till work in the AM.......My wife tells me my speech doesn't sound any diffrent, but I don't believe her. She is looking at me diffrently........

OK, I do recall Mike, and I do recall him having improvement. However each person is different, will heal differetly and cannot expect the same or even sometime similar result. Any surgery can make you worse, I would never suggest taking someone's advice or story and have surgery bases on that suggestion or their result. That is why I always say stuff like "sounds like you may have", "see a ...."

Ultimately we all have to decide what risks we take. Hopefully the surgeon will give thorough informed consent, and many times multiple opinions should be sought.

Mike, I am glad you found a reason to live.

Me too Doc, me too....I have a buncha people to help still. I am a good Paramedic and my injury is no longer a secret. Everyone knows.......and when I get a pat on the back from one of the firefighters that isn't sick of me talking about it every now and then at work ? That helps me live.......that's how I live. That's how I go on. This place helped me. I found people like me here. One common hell that I wouldn't wish on any one is our common thread....I'm here man, and I ain't planning on checking out yet......at least not this week...By the way, my name is Ian. I do take responsibility for this...I was mad because I personally emailed Mike in the middle of November to see if he was okay. He said he was fine and only took 2 motrin a day and that I should go to Donoff and trust him. I do know that everyone is different and I do not blame Mike, I just wish he had mentioned something to me in his personal email to me in November. Maybe this has come on since then. After reading his emails I am sorry to have blamed him and maybe I misinterpreted his first email. Only he knows how he felt when I emailed him on his personal email in November...

Thanks!!! I am really sorry for what I said, I read it too fast and misinterpreted and I am mad at myself and Dr. Donoff. He told me there would be no downsides. My tongue would not be involved etc. Now when I call him he won't talk to me, just wants me to fly up to see him. He didn't spend anytime with me when I went up there, just acted like every single neurectomy he did was fantastic. I asked him how many he did, the outcomes, etc. He said there were absolutely no downsides and that he knows the nerve to the tongue and won't cut it, etc and acted like it was sooo easy. Now I know differently and that he doesn't f/u with his patients. He doesn't want to know you after this. I would not recommend him. I do not blame you Mike, Ian. I am very sorry and I would also take anyone's pain. I know what it is like too well and just wish I could press a button and disappear. I feel like I am a failed science project....I also worked with fireman and paramedics. I worked for a not for profit that did their retirement plans, even road in the firetruck. I helped firemen and policeofficers plan for their retirement for 12 years before I had to leave on a disability from this. Came out of nowhere and just continued to get worse. Oh well, maybe things will change....

The two of you need to look into Motor Cortex Stimulation. It is where they put a stimulator in your brain, and it blocks the pain signals. PAIN FREE!!...Very High Success rate and is being used all the time both before and after cutting the nerve. So there still is hope Dawn and Mike. Look up Dr. Winfree in Columbia University Hospital in NYC. I'm going to do this instead of the neurectomy because ALL of the doctors are telling me the pain will come back if I cut the Nerve and possibly worse. But it's not too late for either of you call him.....he can make you pain free!

I've been to 2 Dr.'s now, and consulted some of the best dr.'s in the country who tell me that I am an IDIOT if I cut the nerve. And that the way to go is the Motor Cortex Stimualtion. Not one Dr....said anything about it causing pain...that's impossible...not too mention the surgery is completely reversable. I don't know where your getting your info from but it's wrong...One of the Dr.'s who is world renoun in this is Dr. Bob Levy at Northwestern University...google him and do some research before throwing at stuff like that. I'm so glad I've decided not to cut the nerve, because the PAIN will come back as a numb burning pain, and I thought every Dr. was full of crap telling me that...but reading these sites and the research I've done it's true...Cutting the nerve is a MISTAKE....But hey..It's your life!

If your post was directed to me than I am sorry that I came across wrong. I definately didn't mean to direct anything negative at you or the procedure. I guess I've grown cynical after listening to the "I can't help you. Don't do it." response that I got from every doctor. I never tried nerve repair and reluctantly glad that I didn't.

I only posted the other one's experience because, as well all know, every situation is different. I hope it works for you and that you keep us up to date on how you do.

You still havnt clued us in on what injury you have or how long youve been suffering? What you really need to find before you do is.. Any person with your injury that can testify that this procedure did in fact work wonders.. Just remember theres a doc on every corner ready,willing and able to take your $$ for an experiment.. OK BOWHO....You are an absolute IDIOT...You all seriously need psychological help, you all play victim saying that these Doctors did this to you...however, in essence alot of you allowed them to do it to you, and you are all friggin so paranoid, because you trusted doctors that messed you up, and it's your own fault because you didn't do the research...
I am going to POST this and them I am done with all of you...I thought I could help because I've been doing so much research on this you have no IDEA... I have a job, I'm not on disability (I was for a year, but it made me more depressed) I've been in pain for the past 12 years, I go to work every frigging day praying I make it through. I had a friggin Doctor cut my mental nerve, and damage it, since than I've had several scar revision surgeries, including a nerve graft where the cut the friggin nerve out of my damn foot and put it in my f***ing face!!!...I have been hopitalized for pain over 10 times, weeks at a time...I have had Mental Nerve blocks years ago once a week for an entire year. It wasn't until Dr. Meyer in Atlanta revised the scar and decompressed the nerve and it brougt my pain level down to a 3 that I could live with (for 6 years)..... Unfortunatley, 3 years ago a Neuroma formed, which brought the pain to a 10, I lost 40 pounds and got severely depressed and wanted to die....I always begged the doctors to cut the damn nerve out of my face and no one would do it. And it wasn't until I got the neuroma, and wanted to die when Dr. Peter Constantino in NYC, did the nerve graft from my foot to my mouth last may. It seems like all was going well, and graft was working, however, I got another neuroma, so they tried to freeze it, and that made it worse and I was hospitalized for 2 weeks at Roosevelt Hospital put on Daultin Drip, Lidocaine Push for 6 hours a day and steroids (just got back last week)...I told Dr. Constantino if he didn't cut it out I was going to to it myself! Ok??????????????
So anyway that's when he got me in touch with Dr Winfree in Columbia University Hospital, and Dr. Robert Levey (Northwestern University Hospitatl Chicago ILL) this Motor Cortex Stimulation surgery is the newest and most promising thing out there. Ask Dr. Gary Heir, who is the best Orafacial Pain Doctor at UNDMJ in the country).. And you are an absolute IDIOT if you think I'm trying to SOLICIT your ass...I don't know you and I don't give a crap what you do...I was on this sight feeling bad for everyone...so I decided to throw it out there and let you do the research for yourself. I don't have time to sit on a computer all day like you all, and be Martres and do nothing about it. I have to go to work, I have to survive, it's not an OPTION!

Yeah he's a BRAIN DOC DUH...it seems like you need a damn brain doc to understand what Motor Cortex Stimulation is!
It's where they put a stimulator in your BRAINNNN (boy your smart, see so you would need a brain DOC!)...Unbelievable....He's a Doctor who specializes in using MCS to block the pain signals to your brain. The stimulator goes in the lining of your brain...not in your BRAIN...Do me a favor Mr. Bowho...google Motor Cortex Stimulation Facial Neuralgia and see what you get...OK???....not just the Doctors...This is sad to say but no wonder why your still in pain, damn the pain makes you negative, miserable and reluctant to any new possiblities of getting rid of the pain. It almost seems like you don't want to hear about anything new.....Have a nice life Mr. Bowho.

Okay, I think everyone should calm down, I am very glad to get all of your info in such a concise form!!! I am going to print it out. That is what the doctors want!!! I am going to pray for you, even though I don't pray, except recently to anyone who will hear me!!!! I will be thinking about you and rooting for your success Kelley because if you are successful then that means there is hope for us. That is what I need in my life because I can't accept taking narcotics the rest of my life and not being able to kiss my son because I have "burning stuff on my face" who is 4 years old, who is the cutest thing out there-I just want to eat him up...getting side tracked, but anyway, I am a prisoner of the drugs side effects etc. If the drugs worked for me, fine, I would not be on this site, but they don't. I would do anything for me to live a better quality of life. I was soooo much fun b/fore this...I was the young carefree one in our house and now I feel like I am 87 and I just turned 47. So thanks so much and please keep in touch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry if I pissed ya off a little here.. But you still havnt clued us in on how your nerve damage occurred in the first place?

My lingual nerve damage started from an injectional/wisdom tooth extraction 7 years ago...

My burning electrical zapping numb yanked out tongue,with a vice grip feeling on my jaw 24/7 lead me to tell my docs to just shoot me if they couldnt help..

I had a neuroma removed.. And i still work every friggin day too.. I must have just had some better $hithouse luck than you and some others around here, because im not in 24/7 burning hell pain any more.. and im drug free.. My tongue remains numb..

FYI.. I dont have to google MCS.. Ive known about it for about 3 years now.. and i know someone personally who has it in for 2 years now, and its a very uncomfortable bulging on his breastbone.. needless to say what it does when it kicks in to zap the brain.. and hes still on meds... So good luck to you with it.. Hope it works.. Let us Know? Dont go away pissed off for too long.. Sounds like you need us

Yes I had it done 2 weeks ago and so far so good....definitely takes away the constant burning..still healing so I'm going slow witj the stimulation. But so far its worked better than everything I've tried.

Well from what you wrote above in feb. you have been thru hell over the years..Good to hear you have found something finally that works..

Where is your burning? Do you have the tingling pain? are you numb?
