I agree that it is frustrating trying to find anything regarding long term complications. I think one of the reasons may be that people with permanent IA injuries have not been followed on a long term basis in studies? Idk..In my case, these are the complications I feel I have as a result of my IA injury (l5 months ago):
1. Lip burning and occasional pain spikes in chin.
2. Continued numbness (now partial) along gum, chin and lip. Altered sensation to touch in chin. Has improved but still bothers me.
3. Severe aversion to future dental work - fear/mistrust of dentists (my trust is slowly rebuilding now with my new dentist)
4. Increased length and severity of migraines (this was the only effect confirmed and addressed by the neurologist consulted)
5. Increased problem with jaw joint (TMJ)
6. Difficulty in brushing properly on numb side. Difficulty in flossing because of jaw problem (can't open mouth fully)
7. Teeth alignment? For months, I avoided closing my teeth together on the injured side to avoid biting or chewing on the inside of my cheek. My bite is extremely wierd now.
8. Speech affected. I have trouble pronouncing multi-syllable words...difficulty pronouncing words with the letter f,v or sh in them. Symptoms get worse after I talk for a long time...I avoid talking socially after teaching a whole day.
9. Depression/anger
