I feel so aweful for you and your situation. I also suffer from lingual nerve damage at age of 26. Although, I only suffer from it on one side. I can not image how you deal with the pain of both lingual nerves being damage. Maybe my road of "what to do" will help you. I had my wisdom teeth extracted on Dec 17, 2008. I was told to wait it out for a couple of months to see if I regained feeling. I saw Physicians, a neurologist, and oral surgeons. I wasn't fully confident on how to solve my problem until I saw a person who was not only a physician but also and dentist/oral surgeon. He stuck a 3inch long needle through one side of my tongue and out the other, 2 times!. I had my eyes closed so I had no idea what he was doing. He told me afterward that he had just pierced my tongue 2 times. I had to feeling what so ever. This M.D./D.D.S.He was the only one who set me in the right direction. He sent me 15hrs away from my home to see someone who does microneurosurgery. This M.D./oral surgeon informed on my choices. He said if you were getting SOME feeling back after these 4 months you should just wait it out...BUT he said that if there was no nerve damage and it was just the nerve being stubborn to the injection, it should've came back within two weeks of the surgery. He told me to decide how bad it bothered me and if it bothered me bad enough I should consider lingual nerve repair. He said he would go in the site and see if he could visibley see damage, if he could not he would close it back up and just wait. If there was visible damage he would repair it. In my case my nerve had scar tissue damage. Something that would not heal on its own. The nerve had tried to repair itself but did not succeed. He cut the scar tissue part of the nerve out and joined the two ends. Now I just have sit and wait. It is estimated that within 3 months you should hopefully feel a little...sensation. I will never taste again on that side because they can not fix my taste buds. sad... I am now 2 weeks out of surgery...praying that it will work, even just a little. I will keep you updated. If anyone is curious, I had lingual nerve repair in Omaha Nebraska at the University of Nebraska with Dr. Leon Davis. He also said that there is a good neuro repair Dr. in Boston Mass., and one in Texas. I hope all of you out there find some help after reading my experience. |
