"Tingling feeling in Lip and Chin - Surgery Sa"

   Hi Everyone,
I just had surgery to remove all four wisdom teeth and after two days, I am experiencing a really weird feeling on one side of my lower lip and below (chin area). I went to see my dentist and he said very matter of factly that a risk of the surgery is nerve damage. I was pretty upset, since he is a specialist. He said he doesn't think it will last since he doesn't remember seeing a nerve during surgery.

I did a search of my sypmtoms and foudn this board. I am hoping I can hear from some of you who had similar experiences. Will this feeling go away? It feels really tingling, almost burning as if that one side of mhy lip is asleep. I can feel my finger when i touch my lip but it feels really weird.

What should i do?? The dentist said it may take months to get the sensation back...but doesn't that mean its damamged??

hi kit...your dentist should have told you before your extractions that a risk of this surgery is nerve damage. Is he an oral surgeon? Did he give you a consent form to sign prior to the surgery?

You seem to have more feeling than I had after my inferior alveolar nerve was damaged during a wisdom tooth extraction last year. I was completely numb along my gum, lip and chin and couldn't feel the touch of my finger for quite a few weeks. I had wierd sensations 'inside' those areas though. Twitches, throbbing, tingling. Anyway, what I'm hoping is that if you have had nerve damage, that it isn't too severe and that maybe your feeling will come back pretty fast?

Are you having any shoots of pain in the area affected?

   Hi Charlotefr,
Thanks for replying! Yes he did get me to sign a consent form, but he did not say that it was likely that I would have the risk/complication (said i was still young and he didn't see anything in my xray).

I can feel my finger when i touch my chin and lower left lip (this is the part that has the weird feeling) It goes from the bottom left side of my lip and bottom left side of my chin(hope that makes sense)

he poked me with a sharp object in those areas and i could feel it, so he said it should get better soon. I really hope so, it feels awful. I have a burning sensation in my lips and I do have some shot's of pain in the chin...but not so much in the lips..the lips just feel like they are on fire.

It has been two days since surgery (i had it on saturday) and i didnt have that much swelling....he said one of the reasons could be the nerve is bruised due to swelling, but i dont even have that much.

sorry for rambling....

Also, is there anything i can do to help the situation? Or even confirm that is a result of nerve damage?

He said that nothing could be done and that the way to tell was just by the way I felt, if it got better it got better, etc....

Hi kit...how are you doing now? I guess you're about a month post-surgery? It's too bad the forum went down just after you posted.

It sure sounds to me that your dentist has seen these types of injuries before..."if it gets better, it gets better"

Anyway, I really hope you've regained normal feeling in your lip and chin in the last few weeks...
