"nerve damage following wisdom tooth extractio"

Hi am new to this site and only stumbled across it in my research about nerve damage. Let me tell you about myself - im 34 yrs old and live in the UK. At the moment i am in distress due to the damage caused during my wisdom tooth extraction! I am now 2 weeks post operative, and recovery has been painful to say the least. it was my bottom 2 wisdoms i had extracted as they were badly impacted, and by all accounts the operation itself proved difficult to remove them. i am just glad i had a GA! since the operation i have so far been unable to return to work, due to the excruciating pain/swelling/stiffness in the area - sometimes it felt like my throat was closing up! thankfully now though the actual wound is healing and swelling has gone down, and i can open my mouth slightly wider to be able to eat! - Not that i currently want/feel like eating. This then brings me to the nerve damage, at the moment i currently have little feeling and taste on the left side of my tongue coinciding with a horrid tingling sensation and the fact my tongue feels to big for my mouth. I also am suffering from pain and numbness in my lower lip and chin on the right, that whole area is so sore to touch, i cant even bear clothes rubbing against it. my lower teeth on the right also feel strange like there's a tight band around them. Went back to see my OS yesterday and all he said was sometimes this happens give it time and come back in 3 months! I kinda feel at a loss at the moment, i feel so run down yet feel as if i just have to get on with things as Ive gotta go back to work next week and im sure people think im making it up and it's not as bad as im making out! Just nice to know there are others for who this is a painful reality and therefore felt like i had to share my experince!

Thanks

hi luna, I just don't know what to say to you......it sounds like you may have a lingual and an inferior alveolar injury and that is beyond my comprehension when I think about what that combination must feel like in these early weeks of recovery.

I only have an IAN injury and I remember the trouble I had swallowing...choking phlegm in my throat constantly for weeks. I'm positive that my TMJ was furthur 'stressed' from the surgery (I also was under GA) and I am still not able to open my mouth fully after l6 months. I feel so sorry for you having to deal with pain and numbness in your lip and chin as well as numbness and pain in your tongue

The hypersensitivity in your chin should gradually diminish. I remember when I couldn't wear a scarf the first winter because the slightest touch aggravated the area.

What is your OS doing for you with respect to post-care? Telling you that this 'sometimes happens' doesn't help, imo. Telling you to 'wait' and 'come back in 3 months' is a cop-out on his part, imo. Has he done anything at least to map the extent of the numbness? What prescriptions did he give you to help with your pain/discomfort?

I agree with Charlotte on being told come back in 3 months!!! The nerve of these dentists!!! What are they thinking? Its not everyday someone shows up here with both sides and 2 different nerves injured... I only have the tongue damage and that itself is killer.. Make sure you get proper care.. This can torture you for along time..

Hi! thanks for your words of support its nice 2 know i am not alone in my recovery Today feels like especially a bad day, lots of pain on the whole of the right side of my face with sharp shooting pains every so often!!! i know it's still early days in my recovery, but on a day to day basis that offers no comfort as im sure you know! yeah the whole swallowing thing is hard i fully appreciate what you mean by the 'choking phlegm' in the throat.......really finding eating hard at the moment, and have lost a vast amount of weight since the op! Cant even bear brushing my teeth....having to use a child's toothbrush and toothpaste, finding adult's toothpaste to harsh and cant cope with how it burns my mouth!!

As for the OS i came away from the appointment feeling completely disheartened, it wasn't even the surgeon who performed the op! he did map where the pain/numbness was and wrote it in his notes. yet offered no real advice (found more advice on this site) or pain relief! Think im going to go see my GP this week, although he not an expert in this area he's good at listening and he's not afraid to hand out prescriptions unlike some doctors!! And at least he can make referrals!

I'm going back to work Tuesday and am hoping that being at work will offer some distraction from all this! Sorry for writing such long posts.....it's just good to vent it all without boring family and friends, who dont understand!!

You're definitely not alone in this. I was so glad to find this site shortly after my injury...I don't know what I would have done or 'where' I would be today without the support of the people on this site.

Please try to eat as much as you can..you need to keep your body strong throughout your recovery. Maybe you can try some liquid supplements? Have you considered taking Vitamin B12 sublingual (methylcobalamin)? I take one 1000 mcg tablet a day. It's supposed to help keep the body's nerves healthy.

My family doctor was the one who finally listened to me and prescribed a stronger painkiller. I also took an anti-depressant for a few weeks, but stopped because I didn't like the side effects. Plus, for me, it made me more depressed to take them. What I found the most helpful were the anti-inflammatories...I still take Ibuprofen when my face 'flares up'...mostly when I'm overly stressed or tired.

To help with the throbbing pain in my face, I would sit on the sofa and lay my face on a soft pillow against the back of the sofa and just rest and watch tv. Early on, I had to fashion a 'face sling' out of two socks...just to give support under my chin. The throbbing pain seemed to be so much worse when I stood up...my theory is gravity??? Anyway, for me, it helped somewhat to support my chin underneath. I used ice packs quite a bit also. At night, I would sleep in a semi-sitting position propped by pillows on either side. That way, I could get a few hours sleep anyway.

It will feel strange to brush your teeth, and this will last for quite awhile probably. I wish I would have thought of using a children's toothbrush on the numb side!! Good idea!

I found work was definitely a distraction so I'm glad you're going to give going back a try. I was only working part-time then..and had Wednesdays off, so I was still able to get some rest. If you're going back full-time, try to make arrangements so that you can rest well in the evenings. Make YOU the priority for the next few weeks...the housework, etc. can wait.

Outside of this forum, I didn't have much in the way of 'human' support in my life. My dogs were a big part of my healing...bless their hearts.

   lunaberry...how are you doing now?

I thought this article today was interesting. In my case, but I'm not a celebrity, my tooth was taken out pretty darn quickly...little hesitation...little worry on my oral surgeon's behalf about what might go wrong. I'm going to follow Ms. Buchanan on Twitter and see how she does!

Buchanan's Tooth Agony

British singer KEISHA BUCHANAN is in agony after her dentist refused to remove her infected wisdom tooth.

The former Sugababes star has long suffered with problems relating to the molar and the pain became intolerable for the 26 year old earlier this month (Oct10).

In a series of posts on her Twitter.com page, she writes, "Last night was awful, I had a fever, threw up, Ear infection, Every symptom from a bad case of wisdom tooth drama!!

I've been going through this for months because they wouldn't take it out... Something about it being to close to a vain (sic). Umm close or not I'm getting this sucker out so they're reffering (sic) me now. I'm high on antibiotics & pain killers at the mo (moment) so I'm feeling better."

It's a shame she didn't know about the Godzilla. She could have cured her infection in just a few minutes. Oh well...hope all goes well with her surgery.
