"Irish girl with Lingual nerve damage"

   Hello to everyone,

I am a 26 yr old mother of 2 girls, I live in Ireland. I have been visiting this site for 2 yrs but have never posted. I am alone here in my bed in so much pain and feeling so hopeless that I have decided to post for support and advice.

I had a lower left wisdom tooth removed 2 years ago, I wont go into the whole story as it makes me too angry, but lets say a difficult extraction and a rude unhelpful dentist.
By next morning I drove myself into emergency room and was admitted for 10 days to try kill infection... from here my journey started.

My tongue never recovered from the numbness of injection. I was sent over by plane to UK to see a specialist as nobody in Ireland qualified, after few plane trips I was operated on in Uk in Nov 2007, lingual nerve repair surgery. Professer said he had never seen a nerve so severed, and it was unlikely that I wud get back full sensation.
It is not sept 10 and my tongue is still numb, the pain in my tongue is constant, and so bad I slurr words and have generally become a recluse over this. The Professer I am under will nor perscribe me anything as he says I am too young and with 2 young kids he feels the medication would be too strong. The only relief I get is by chewing gum...
There are times I have thought about taking my own life because the thoughts of trying to life "forver" with this pain and burning id beyond thinking about. Maybe this sounds extreme? I have never spoken to anyone that has had this experience, I just am desperate.

Thanks for listening xxx

hi there...this forum has been down for a long time and Ross, the moderator, appears to have successfully got it back up! Please be patient and I'm sure that someone who has experienced the same injury (lingual nerve damage) will be online soon to respond to you. (It may take some time for people to realize that the forum is back...)

I've had a different nerve damaged..the inferior alveolar...and believe me there have been times over the last 2 l/2 years when I have thought the same way as you....but, just being able to talk to others on this forum who are going through the same thing absolutely 'saved' my life.

Thinking of you...
Charlotte

Hi. I do not have damage to the lingual nerve, mine is to the inferior alveolar but I have the same nerve pain. I just wanted to post and let you know about a homeopathic product that I use that has helped with the burning/stinging pain. It is called NerveFix and (atleast in the US) can be bought on line at vitacost.com for $16/bottle. I take 2 bottles a month and have for years. It worked ALOT for me in the beginning and then I backed down to the maintenance dose and I lost some of the effectiveness. I'm not sure why or if it wasn't just a coincidence.

I have known other people who have used it, including someone who had problems with his sciatic nerve. They have all said that it helped. Doesn't take the pain away completely but maybe enough to take the edge off.

My 12 pound dog got into a bottle and chewed up almost the entire bottle of the capsules and it did nothing to her. I can't imagine that if it didn't hurt her, it would be of harm to people.

I think it took two weeks for me to be able to tell a difference.

It seems like it would be worth a shot, especially since they will not prescribe you medications, that, IMO, you probably do need. Living with the pain can be worse than living with the side effects of medications.

Good Luck.

   Hey, lilastragirl,

Welcome to the Board (gosh, I haven't typed those words in a long time!)
Sounds like you may have done a lot of reading around the forum in the past couple of years. Listen, I know it can feel impossible thinking about "forever" in terms of pain like this. Here's my suggestion: Don't. Instead, do all you can to focus on the present - and what is good in the present - when that overwhelming feeling comes. Nothing but this very moment is guaranteed in life. So you don't need to be afraid of one version of how things may turn out, because, who knows what will really happen? 6 years ago, I felt the same way you do. Scared and it all seemed impossible. But you'll see. As long as you keep on sticking it out, you'll keep growing. Life will keep happening. Other dreams and new dreams will still come true. You can and you will get through this, one day at a time. I promise.

Pim gave you some good advice about the NerveFix (Hi, Pim! Good to see you again!) I also want to suggest, if you haven't done a search of the forum yet, to do so for homeopathic remedies. I just lost my job today and can't afford health insurance, so you and me, hon, are both on this no-medication adventure together (I just get to start out by going through a few weeks of withdrawal, though. Yay!) I can tell you already, though, that everything you can do to relax your body will pay in dividends. So take really good care of the muscles in your shoulders, the back of your head, your neck and your jaw; check out the homeopathic, nonprescription remedies here on the Board; and post again with your progress. I'll let you know how it goes for me, too.

Sending you big hugs and wishes for better days ahead,
KarenR

Thanks all for replying, I did notic ethat it had been long time since anyone had posted.

I am now keen on case for nervefix and am going to order online to see if they help. I actually went and got hypnotherapy a few weeks ago too, waste of money, made no difference.
It is so good to talk to someone who understands the pain of this. I do sometimes wish i could just allow my husband feel what it's like for few hours so he can understand.
The professor also told me last feb that he has a team working on a type of muscle graft to help me but he is not sure ehwn it would be ready. anyone heard of this???

My email address is tinaspence751@gmail.com if anyone would like to make direct contact x

I know how you feel. My lingual nerve was damaged in 2001. There have been a few times I wished it on people around me too. I have been suicidal on more than 1 occasion. So dont even think you are being to extreme. This can be called the suicide injury because of its unrelenting nature of torturous pain. I to had nerve repair. My nerve was not severed though. I had scar tissue removed and was highly drugged for 5 years after that. I would not have made it without the drugs even though they never gave me total relief they sure helped me sleep the better part of 5 years away. I am drug free now and for the most part i just have a numb tongue, which without the burning or the zapping sensations is liveable. IMO, You need to find a new professor who will treat you for the pain. You need more than nerve fix to tame that down.. By the way.. I am half Irish and live in the USA. Glad to see the site back up so you can get better help on your situation. I have heard of grafting around here but it came without success. Did they just reconnect your nerve?

muscle graft or nerve graft? Again, I have damage to a different nerve but be careful about what you decide to do. Many doctors will tell you that trying to fix this problem too far after the damage occurred will make it worse. Everyone is different. Some have had success, others have ended up worse.

Let us know if the NerveFix helps you. It is homeopathic, which I will admit I don't know what that means. I've always said that if I was told snorting dried up cat sh** would fix my pain, I'd be fighting the dogs for the litter box crunchies!!!

not to be nosy but did you loose your job because of your injury? If it weren't for the type of job I had and bosses who knew me before this happened, I would have been fired. I took A LOT of sick leave, no pay, vacation and company leave with pay before I finally threw in the towel. I wouldn't hire me anymore...and I used to be a highly functional employee..and then the dentist....ok, I'll stop before I get on my dental soapbox.

I am sorry for your job loss and all that comes with it, regardless of why it happened. Life can sure throw you a curve ball when you least need it.

Dear Irish girl, you say that "The Professer I am under will nor perscribe me anything as he says I am too young and with 2 young kids he feels the medication would be too strong." This gives me a slight touch of horror, since there are available medications (non-opioids) that I would not consider strong, e.g. Lyrica that is designed for nerve pain and controls the nerve activity and can be used for the rest of the life. Have the doctors tried any medication? You could be even pain free in medication and therefore it is an unpleasant thought that you have to suffer . My pain doctor in London is Joanna Zakrzewska and I can warmly suggest her and her team to you.

   Hi to all

I am glad to see so many people to talk to.
My professor has not tried me on ANYTHING, nothing. He keeps telling me that he is going to send me to a pain clinic but it hasnt happened, so i have been just having to bear it

I dont want to upset prof cos he is leading my legal medical reports as i wanna persue this legally. He is giving me super reports and is 100% behind me on my legal battle.

This injury has cost me 1000's and i actually dont think any amount of money will ever compensate. Has anyone recieved compensation here???

I am so lucky to have such supportive family who allow me rant and cry when it gets too much for me to bear

x

Yes there are some here who have sued and been awarded compensation. Unfortunately the amounts are not huge in the USA. I actually spent more on drugs for the pain than i did for the repair surgery. You have every right to get help for the pain. I would consider myself to be every Doctors worst nightmare the year i ended up with lingual nerve damage and showed up in their offices. Upset them? you have got to be joking?

I have a national health insurance (as everyone in my country), so I started a battle to get compensation two years ago. Last autumn I received a statement saying I cannot get any money back, because it is known that getting a nerve injury like this is common (e.g. one in thousand gets a some sort of a full-time pain condition after wisdom tooth surgery) and therefore my injury is just a part of statistics.

However, I found out that I can make a new complaint because according to the law, if the medical operation is minor but causes a serious and permanent injury, the person can get compensation despite of being just part of the statistics.

I lose $1000 a year for the medication and I spent about $3000 to get treatment after the injury. Also, I lost $15 000 because I could not work at all / full-time after the operation. I try to get my money back, but many people get just their medication paid by the insurance. I am a terminator by nature, so I am willing to fight with the insurance system.

lilastragirl,

I think I have something to offer you and anyone who suffers burning pain in their tongue from a lingual nerve injury. Get some very hot (the hottest you can find) chili (cayenne) peppers, preferably ground. Rub this into your tongue where the burning is... it will burn for 10 - 20 minutes or so. Don't worry... it doesn't do any damage to your tongue BUT the capsaicin in the pepper blocks "substance P" which has an analgesic effect on the pain. This is about the only thing I've found to give me some immediate relief. Initially, do this 4 - 6 times a day for a few weeks, then cut down to only when needed. It helps but no, it isn't a cure. I have suffered with a dysesthesia (burning pain, stiffness, raw feelings, etc.) for over 38 months due to an injection. I'm about to try using a laser on my lingual nerve. I've had about 60 - 70% improvement over the last three years, but it seems to have hit a plateau. I've got to keep trying to regenerate my nerve. Surgery isn't an option in injectional injuries.

   Hi to all,

Bob, wud u believe my mom had said it to me about rubbing theses peppers on my tongue, she is very into herbal medicine, yet I brushed her off, I will def try this, thanks.

I think our medical system works differently, I am now suing the dentist that did this to me, not only for costs, such as the cost of operation etc but for compensation for the life long injury, I have been told that this is a long battle, and proving medical negligence is huge, but I was never told of any possible things that could go wrong and I never signed a consent form to have the tooth taken out, so in my case my solicitor is fighting on them points, also on the obligation on the dentist's behalf to provide me with proper aftercare, as he told me to just go home when I went back to see him, yet I drove myself into emergency room and was admitted into hospital for 9 days with serious infection too.

Tina

   Hi

This is my first post.I was struck by the discussion of cayenne pepper. I have a friend who is a doctor and I think does some work on pain relief - she mentioned about cayenne pepper coming out as possible pain relief for nerve damage but I didn't take it seriously - I am now tempted as the two medications I have tried don't seem to have helped as the side effects are also difficult to deal with.

neleh1,

Extremely hot cayenne pepper is helpful, no doubt about it. The hotter it is the more effective it becomes. Rub it on the tongue where it burns. The pepper will also burn but that wears off after a while and then you have some relief. I did this 4 - 5 times a day initially, now I do this only once or twice a week. I highly recommend you try homeopathy as well. This too seems to be helping me.

Bob
