"IAN damage after wisdom tooth extraction"

I have had no feeling at all in the left lower gums, teeth, lip, chin and inner cheek since my wisdom tooth extraction 10 days ago. Occassionally I feel some strange sensations in the general area, but I have no reaction to touch, which makes eating rather cumbersome. I am 28 and had the impacted tooth removed for preventative and practical reasons. It was causing some pain.

Anyone have experience with this set of symptoms? I don't think any of the feeling has returned. What kind of timetable am I looking at? What are the chances that this is permanent? Is there anything I can do to encourage the nerve to heal?

My oral surgeon admitted, only after my first follow up and my prodding, that he did see the nerve running between the roots of the impacted tooth and noticed the "notch" there. What exactly does this mean? Could the nerve have been severed and he's not telling me? It was obviously damaged somehow. Your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

Dear Chris, I can't address all your questions. 99% of the questions that will arise are answered here. It may be difficult to surf this site. There is a lot of pain here but mostly and more importantly there is hope and information and guidance through what may be a devastating injury. Others will come, even a doctor that really cares (Dr. B). I encourage you to read around and all the while remember in the back of your mind "everyone is different". Best of luck and post back.

I guess I'm wondering if it's possible to determine the severity of the injury by the symptoms and also what my oral surgeon meant by a "notch." What is the percentage of those who recover?

   Hi Chris

I am just over 3 months post-op. I experienced a torn IAN due to severely rounded roots catching and tearing the nerve when my tooth was extracted.

The lower left side of my mouth, chin and gums were all numb after the freezing wore off. My OS told me upfront of the complication and the potential risks, but until it actually happens you don't appreciate the sense of fear and uncertanty that sets in. On my follow up visit, he did tell me there was a tear in the nerve. He classified it as slight. I asked for his definition of slight and he told me 40%.

My recovery has been coming along well. I still experience a tight feeling occasionally in the space between my chin and lip. I also experience a mild tingling in my lip. All sensation in my gum has returned and I feel heat and cold. I also increased my multi-vitamin dosage (I found one with lots of B). Many of the people on this site recommended B, so I figured it can't hurt.

Everyone heals at different rates so hang in there and don't hesitate to ask questions.

mike

i don 't think you can really tell as each case is different....my OS knew that my nerve was touching the root of my wisdom tooth and afterwarsd told me that he had to take the tooth out in pieces and then later, after probing him, he finally admitted to "probably" bruising the nerve when he did that (it is at times like this that we wish we had a hidden camera videotaping while we were knocked out eh?)...just make sure to watch it closely and if it goes on for any longer make sure he checks for infection and seek a second opinion! my OS never told me to get one and i have been sticking by him like a faithful lapdog thinking he is gonna "fix" me and it's been 5 and a half months now of pain and sleepless nights...some people do heal right away... one thing i just found out about from my regular dentist that my OS never did and should have is about making a "shadow" of the numb area to check if it is getting larger or smaller as time goes on, you might want to have your doctor do this, or try to make one yourself to chart it...the first month is really hard, the not feeling like yourself and having this deadweight on your face, you can't even talk to someone without feeling like a giant bruised mouth, good luck, and i hope that you get the feeling back soon...i wish i had discovered this message board months ago, it really helps =) Peri

I had a root canal on my left lower wisom tooth - it got compromised from a bridge that was put in. When seeing the digital pic of the tooth I suggested that the root is on the nerve - I could see it. The endonist went ahead with the root canal. After the anesthesia wore off, I had what I considered normal pain. Two days later, the numbness came back to my teeth (lower letft) chin and lip. I called the DR and he first put me on a regimen of anti biotics - then 2 weeks later his partner put me on steroids - no help and severe deprression after the steroids. . . we wasted three weeks - when I was numb he shoulkd have gotten me in there - it turns out the dental cement that they pack the root canal with leaked out of the bottom of my tooth and directly onto the nerve - back to an oral surgeon to remove the tooth and dig out the cement (painful process) The endodontist suggested another procedure but I reminded all involved that I wanted the tooth pulled initially as I felt I would have a problem with all this. Treat the whole patient - especially when she has had the teeth for 52 years - trust what she says - now I have sadness and a complete uncomfortable feeling everytime I bite into anything- and total numb on my lower left side - this does not compare with the poor people living in the hurricane area - it is my own personal nightmare - thinking of antidepressants- anyone else do this? Never had a lack of joy in my life til now . . .

   Hi,
I saw your post. The same thing happened to me less than a week ago.
I had a root canal and a post-screw put in. I have a temporary crown over it now. Anyway, the sealer leaked out into the bottom of my tooth too into the nerve channel and the sealer did not even go down to the tip of my root. I am going back to an endodontist in a few days to see where to go from here. I have a numbness in bottom lip and chin that tingles, is painful and burns at times. Is this what happened to you?
Did you get the feeling back? Also, I might have to get the excess sealer cleaned out too-how did that go? If you have time, please write me with your story because it seems very similar to mine.
Thanks,
please email me at jjtfamily@earthlink.net
as I am not sure how to get back to this post.

   Chris,

I assume you found the basic information page about your injury.

If not, here is the link:

http://www.sciential.net/surgical_etiologies.htm

I an not sure what is meant by "the notch", but I think it is a very reasonable question that you should ask your surgeon. It may be a notch on the tooth root that he thinks may have snagged the root. Ask him if the nerve is severed or intact, from what he saw. If it is intact, hopefully you will heal. It can take quite a bit of time to recover, but hopefully the strange sensations are the beginning of recovery.

Hope that helps,

Ross

The most annoying part of the numbness is the teeth, gums, and inner cheek. I cannot enjoy eating the same way because of it. Ross mentioned that he has all sensation back in the gums, but not the chin and lip area. Do the gums heal more readily? I think I could live with the lip and chin numbness if only I could eat normally. I can't say that I've noticed any progress in these first two weeks post-op.

Well, I revisit my OS tomorrow morning and am going to discuss the extent of the damage. I still don't know what he saw other than the nerver running between the roots of my tooth. He hasn't said what, if anything, he did to it upon extraction. At least with the knowledge of whether or not the nerve was severed, I can have some idea what to expect in terms of recovery. I am exactly two weeks post-op today and have no progress, except for some occasional tingling in my lower chin, but that area isn't numb! I just hope these gums and teeth and inner cheek get squared away. Best of luck to all.

   Well,

On my second follow up visit, I got a different OS. I asked him to look at my chart and tell me if the extent of the damage was noted. The only thing I learned is that the OS who did the extraction, was "not surprised" by my lingering numbness, so he knows he did something, I just don't know what. At any rate, the second OS thinks 6 weeks for recovery, but I'm 3 weeks post-op with no improvement. He said if you feel "dead numb" then that's when he starts to worry, but occasional tingling is better. I think I've gotten used to the numbness throughout the day, but eating still sucks. I just want to feel normal again. Any thoughts? I keep posting and no one seems to respond anymore.

   Hi Chris,

I am two weeks out today with the same symptoms as you. My OS is telling me the same thing, except that it could be six months before I feel normal again. We are keeping a chart of the affected area and I think I am improving a LITTLE, but it's not enough to say for certain that it's not just my imagination! I have had 3 medical opinions about this and they all say that as long as I'm not dead numb, the feeling will eventually come back (although there are obviously some people on this site who have been experiencing the burning for years, but it seems that most of their injuries are lingual and not IAN).

Yesterday I bit the inside of my cheek five different times and twice now I have woken up to find that I chewed on my numb lip in the night until it bled. I am anxious to feel normal again too!

Hang in there and keep us posted!
Ann

   Hi Chris,

In the case of the IAN-injury sufferer(us), one must be patient. Take the time to read the many experiences posted in this forum. Unfortunately there aren't many of us who improve dramatically in just a few weeks.

I'm a bit more than 5-months post-extraction. I've got 80-90% of my feeling back in my chin, lips, and teeth on the affected side. It's been a very slow, inconsistant (2 steps forward, 1 backward) recovery. I still have some burning, tingling and hypersensitivity but all-in-all it is far less bothersome. Perhaps I'll eventually recover completely.

Burning, itching, tingling are good signs. I had one specific thumbprint size area that I could identify as the center of the numbness. My o/s, for some reason, said that was a good sign too.

Sometimes I feel like I'm close to normal sensation, other days I'm a bit more numb. As long as you can notice some minimal sensation/improvement then my experience would say you'll get better over time. Like your o/s says, if you're "dead numb" then worry about it. I had very little improvement over the first three weeks aside from losing numbness in some peripheral areas.

In the meantime, eating, etc. does suck. It's no fun chewing up your lip and the constant numbness and odd sensations can really get on your nerves. I found lip balm to be soothing for the lip burning and still use it.

You're much younger than I am so hopefully you'll heal faster.

Best of luck...

Paul

Thanks for the great replies. I do feel like in time, this may get better. I suppose if it doesn't I'll just get used to it. I've been taking my B6 and B12 faithfully, and hope this brings improvement over time.

I totally agree with the assessment that some days you feel more numb than a previous day. That kind of worried me, but now I know it's a strange healing process. Thanks again and keep me updated. I'll do the same.

I am a microsurgeon based out of NY who repairs injured Inferior Alveolar and Lingual Nerves. What you are feeling is a good sign that things will return to normal. Tingling and "crawling" sensations are a good sign. Then may not be prsent all the time, so do not get discouraged. The optimal time to nerve repair if no or minimal sensation returns is 3 months. So have your oral surgeon refer you to a microsurgeon in your area, or you are welcome to see us if 3 months goes by without significant relief. Because after about 6 months the success rate of repair is very low.

Please do not hesitate to contact me for information @drmarkstein@aol.com

Well, it's almost a month since I had my wisdom teeth pulled. I still can't say for sure if I've noticed progress. It bothers me less, but my lip and chin area and gums are still quite numb, and I've had very little tingling the last week or so. I hope this doesn't mean that the healing has stopped. Anyone else go weeks without and tingling/burning and then it started again?

I remember the day that I had so many horrifying questions just like you . I won't get into my story of what happened bcause it is posted somewhere here on this sight, but I will tell you that I too felt the same way you do. I still feel that way once in a while now but it has been 6 months for me now that i have forgotten what a normal mouth feels like. You may recover fully, I have only recovered about 50% and that is just a guess. I can feel my teeth to chew, I can feel hot and cold, I can feel my gums to brush them although it is painful so I brush lightly. My lip still feels fat, and painful to the touch. My only hope right now is to go see a nerve specialist and maybe have surgury but I am not willing to go through all that. My dentist talked to someone who had the same thing happen to her and she had full recovery after a year. So I am still holding out some hope that I will continue to recover. I haven't had any tingling sensations for a long time. I remember I used to lay real still to feel if I was still experiencing any sensations. You will probobly go through many weird and different sensations as I did. It took several months before I could chew food on the left side of my mouth. My teeth on that side felt like they were being squeezed very tightly together. I took ibuprofin for that pain, then they felt very soft and mushy, but now chewing is fine. For a long time my lip felt like it was on fire and even now if I talk alot it feels like that. The only sensation I have now is itching in that area once in a while. Ihope this does not discourage you. I really have recovered a great deal since the extration. It just takes a long time. this is a great sight for anyone suffering with this problem because no one else understands the devistation of it unless you have gone through it. My advise to you is to keep reading this sight and stay as busy as you can. I am hopeing you recover fully. Keep your chin up. bye for now

I stumbled upon this sight, I am glad and I am not glad. I have three wisdom teeth that are giving me hell, yet, I keep putting off getting them out.

Do some of you wish that you would have not had your wisdom teeth out?

The pain that I have now with my wisdom teeth are: pain because it is moving my teeth, and I have had braces!
EAR aches, jaw pain, stiffness, my jaw cracks, sides of my face hurt.

Should I continue to take this pain? Please help. Brenda Thank you so much.

I HOPE AND PRAY FOR ALL OF YOU WITH PAIN TO HEAL.

Can you sue for nerve damage?

   Hi Brenda,

Your symptoms sound to me like they could be TMJ. Have you had anyone diagnose this problem for you? I had all of your symptoms and then got a nightguard for TMJ and it helped tremendously. Had my wisdom teeth removed later "just because" and now wish I had not, as I have suffered IAN damage. You might ask your dentist if he thinks you need a nightguard.

Ann

Sometimes we really need to extract wisdom teeth when they cause pain especially like my wisdom tooth did. I have severe nerve damage and I would of rather had the widom tooth pain than have the pain that I am going through. Somehow during extraction my nerve was damage. I have feeling in all areas, and I have a terrible dull pressure type pain in my chin, lower gums and lips. Lips have burning sensation. I have tried various doctors that simply do not know what to do. One doctor from Hopkins want to operate on the stem of the brain where he belive the pain originates from. I am not conveniced that this is necessary. I am not too trusting anymore. I finally met with a pain management doctor that has precribed Neurotin, which has helped with the pain enough to get through life. I am in hope of some doctor to help me. I thought about suing, the problem is that most lawyers do not know enough about nerve damage nor do they want to take the time to work on a case, nor can you find a doctor who will testify on your behalf, also if you are not disfigured or take a lot of time off from work, they do not wish to take the case. Just make sure that you get a good oral surgeon who is very experienced.

I am wondering the same thing as you, Chris. My tingling and burning has 95% gone away (5 months post-op) and I'm afraid that the healing is over. I see a specialist in 5 days, and it's a good thing, because I've got about 1 month left to decide the fate of my tongue. If I learn anything about disappearing/reappearing sensations, I'll post back.

I agree that it's worrisome. I had some tingling the first two or three weeks, but the last couple of weeks, almost nothing (I'm 5 weeks post-op). I hope this doesn't mean I'm screwed for getting back the feeling in my lips, chin, gums, and teeth.

It's so weird that sometimes I hardly notice it, but then I eat and I feel like my lip is huge. It seems like stress of any kind makes the symptoms much more noticeable.

I'm not an expert, but I'd say stress can do anything harmful to you, you know? Also, I've heard that lack of sleep, or alternating sleep patterns, will also do the trick. I noticed that on the weekends (when I'd sleep until noon) the pain was nearly absent. But on mornings when I deprived myself by staying up late, the burning nearly woke me up. Then, of course, you have the sad crunching sound when you realize you took a chunk out of your (insert numb part here) and then you have to deal with that pain for days (I bit my tongue badly about 5 days ago). I guess that's a good thing though, although I have no pain biting it, I have pain recovering.

Stress and sleep are definitely factors in the pain. My best days are always Sundays and Mondays, because of resting on the weekend. The rest of the week is painful, mornings being better if I got some sleep. I have found emotional stress really increase the pain to an unbearable level, but sometimes it is hard to avoid. Elavil (amitryptiline) is helpful in managing the pain...

Dear Dr Stein, I just read you on the web-site, please could you advise me? I am 3 weeks now with numbing of lower lip and chin - I am very concerned - please can you explain?.......
WHAT IS COMPLETE NUMBING? - I CAN feel hot and cold when applied and slight pain on pinching
I dont think I experience 'burning', is this a bad indication? I sometimes feel 'crawling', wouldnt call it tingling though but can only describe it as kind of SORE on touch??

What do my symptoms indicate please be honest, I have not seen the consultant yet for the follow up - he did say during the extraction procedure that he could see the nerve - will he know if he severed it?

PAULINE - (It truely makes you feel so miserable, i most definately wouldnt have had it done had i known, i feel very let down as i was not in pain with the tooth, i just went along light hearted to whip it out -)

Wow, I just found this site. I am 10 days post wisdom tooth extraction. Numbness, severe painful burning in my gum, chin and lip. I never knew this was even a possibility and especially that is as common as it seems to be. If I had known then what I know now, I would not have had he tooth removed.

I am trying every possible way to heal myself and hope to regain all feeling. I too just want to feel normal again.

I have had the same experience. I am 28 also and had my wisdom tooth removed because it was digging into my cheek tissue and causing some pain. I was not told that this would be one of the risks. Today is the 5th day and i have no sensation in the section where the removal took place. NO feeling in my teeth, gums and cheek. My dentist says it may last 3-6 months and is temporary.

That's all i know.

We all hope it's temporary. I am 5 1/2 weeks post-op and have not gained any feeling back in my lip, chin, gums or teeth. It bothers me less, but it's hard to tell if that's improvement or me getting used to it. There's also still a rather large hole in my lower left gum that has not filled in with new tissue yet. Plus, since I can't feel food over there, I have to flush it out regularly to prevent food from getting stuck in there.

I used to have tingling, but now nothing. I fear that the healing has stopped and this is as good as it's going to get. The only good part about all of this, is that I don't have any pain. Just the annoying as hell numbness that affects my eating habits and my speech somewhat. What are you gonna do? I think another surgery would just risk further damage.

   Chris,
I'm at about 5 weeks and am still having the tingling but no measureable improvement. Every medical person I ask about it always wants to know whether or not it still tingles. They say as long as it tingles it's healing (I'm not convinced that's necessarily true though, as some here seem to have incessant tingling/burning for YEARS). Anyway, if you have lost the tingling for quite some time, perhaps you should see a neurologist while your injury is still "fresh"?
One thing I have been doing is rubbing Evening Primrose Oil into the affected area every day. I read on a website that there is an ingredient in it that has been proven to heal nerve damage in diabetics. I don't know if it's helping, but I can tell you that after I rub it in, the tingling feeling is pretty intense for about 30-45 minutes. Don't know if that means it's helping, or just irritating the area, but maybe you want to give it a try. Are you taking B6 & B12?
Keep us posted with your progress.
Ann

I am taking B-6 and B-12 daily. Like I said, the numbness is noticeable when speaking and definitely when eating, but otherwise I feel pretty normal. This in itself is an improvement I guess. In any case, what will a neurologist do other than propose surgery? I will not have surgery that holds the same risks as the wisdom tooth extraction did. I just wish I knew if my nerve was "bruised" or severed. As I mentioned in a previous post, my OS was not very forthcoming and left me wondering what he knows. At least with the knowledge of the nerve being severed, I would know that it's not going to heal. Has anyone else had the tingling stop for 2 weeks at a time or altogether, and still have improvement afterwards?

Because any surgery in the area, runs the same risk as wisdom tooth extraction, I would not have the surgery unless the pain is out of hand.

Luckily, I don't have pain, only severe numbness, so my injury is more annoying and disheartening than anything else. I am almost 6 weeks post-op, and haven't had much improvement. I too had stiffness and pain at first, but that did go away.

   Dear Chris,
I promised I would post back if I learned of anything regarding recurring pain. The specialist I saw said that pain is not recurrent in this type of case (of course, I'm sure there are a few people who would beg to differ). Even though the pain and burning should not come back, that doesn't necessarily mean the healing has stopped. The doc told me that after awhile, other nerves in the area will start compensating for the damaged nerve, making recovery a multi-spectrum event! I hope this helps a bit, but like me, at least we're lucky that we no longer have to deal with the pain. Pain or numbness, I would choose numbness. You're very very early into your post-op, so I'm guessing you'll start to feel some major changes soon. Good luck!

This week will be 7 weeks since my extractions. I still have no spontaneous tingling or feeling. My gums are still numb, as is my lip and chin. I may have slightly more feeling in the gums than before, but it's really hard to tell.

I do have a spot on my chin that is not numb, but when I touch it, I can feel a minor jost through my chin and up to my lip. It's really weird. Is this a good sign? Like I said, I cannot notice any other improvement. Plus, that hole back there is still wide open. I continue to have to flush it out after eating because I can't feel if there's anything in there. Rice is just the right size to get lodged in the opening, so eating is still a hassle too.

I, too, started to wonder about my recovery after 2 months in. My jaw still could not open fully and the holes were still large enough to trap food. I have the same sensation (not with one spot, but all over) that when I touch the outside of my tongue, it feels as if it's a deeper touch, not a surface touch. It seems to travel all the way to the inside of my tongue. It's been a long time since I've read all the above posts, but who have you seen lately about this? Check-ups with your OS/dentist? Neurologist? Specialist? Where are you from?

Has anyone experienced improvement in the gums and inner cheek area, but not in the lip and chin? If I've had any improvement I think it's inside my mouth. The numbness on the lip and chin is still pretty severe. Is this the normal order in which things heal? Also, it seems like the healing is taking place front to back, that is, I can feel my gums in some of my first teeth (eye tooth, first molar), but not so much towards the injury site.

My lower right wisdom tooth was extracted 4 1/2 weeks ago. On that side, my chin, lip, inner cheek, gum, and teeth are numb. I had intense burning and electrical impulses for the first 3 weeks, and in the past 1 1/2 weeks the burning and pain have been subsiding. However, the area and degree of numbness remains unchanged. (I posted a summary of my story in "Very Worried About Numbness....") I wonder too what the persistent, unchanged numbness means, especially since the burn/pain is diminishing (which I am so grateful for!). I was hoping that the burn/pain and numbness would heal together at the same rate. Does the numbness take longer to clear up?

I think we're all a bit different when it comes to the healing process. I'm coming up on seven months and continue very gradual improvement. The numbness is mostly gone though my lips and chin still burn and tingle a bit as well as feel numb even though I have feeling when I touch them (as if that makes sense). The inner chin area also still feels funny.

My teeth (molars up to eyetooth) were pretty numb for a long time but are about normal now as are my gums though I still have a very sensitive spot by my eyetooth. So in my case the numbness disappeared from back to front.

Soon after my surgery I found a focal point about the size of a quarter at the corner of my chin under and including my lip. The numbness, etc. has gradually shrunk in area but is still a noticable at this focal point. But the symptoms have gradually diminished in intensity.

I found the numbness gradually replaced by hypersensitivity especially with my chin. It is still very uncomfortable to shave there.

My symptoms have been very variable all along, they ebb and then increase from day-to-day.

I have talked to a friend who had two wisdom tooth extracted and her husband also had his tooth extracted by their regular dentist. She mentioned that the dentist sew the gum back and she has had no problem at all. If the gum is sewed, there should be no problem with food getting stuck in the holes. Perhaps you can enquire with your dentist. Good Luck.

Well, join the club. you have mental nerve paresethesia. It goes like a box from midline to corner of your moutn, down the chin and around. These injuries are VERY common on extractions. Were panarex's taken? Did you sign a consent form? He admitted he saw the nerve, well, then why did he injure it? I've had my injury for 7 years and no it's permanent after 6 months to a year if you don't get back the feeling then you learn to live with it. Try to comfort yourself with ice and maybe Alleve (with food) to calm the nerve which is traumatized or perhaps severed but morethan likely injured.
do your homework and by this site, seems that you have, surgery is not always the answer to repair the nerve. If you have burning, well that's nerve damage. you will experience lots of shock like impulses, sensitivity to cold/hot, touch, spicy foods and a host of other things as the nerve tries to repair itself. keep a journal and find a GOOD lawyer but depending on where you live, don't expect too much.
Good luck?

My oral surgeon to the panarex x-rays, but didn't mention a thing about risk upon viewing them. It was only after I pressed that he looked at my chart and saw that he saw the nerve running between the roots of the tooth. He would not elaborate on how he "bruised" or bumped during the extraction, so I don't know the extent of the damage at all. He used the word "notch," but not in any context I could understand.

It's been 81/2 weeks now, and I'm pretty damn numb, with little improvement, so I don't think this healing will be complete unless something dramatic happens very soon.

   Dear Ms. Page,

My condolences to you on a less-than-expected result. I know this is highly unpleasant. Unfortunately, noone has ever received a guaranteed risk-free life. Results like yours are part of life.

Health care professionals, generally, do not plan to injure any of their patients. Paresthesia of the tongue, teeth, lip, and gingiva is a known complication of dental procedures, including tooth extaction. Most patients are informed of that when they present for procedures. Why would you need an attorney for something you knew could happen? A GOOD lawyer would tell you not to proceed with a nuisance lawsuit.

You have my sincerest wishes the situation resolves completely in the least possible time.

I don't know what he used. I was knocked out for the extractions and he numbed me up while I was still out. He saw the nerve during the wisdom tooth extractions, so I have to think that the injury is related to the extraction not the injections.

Well, this week will mark the momentous 12 weeks since surgery, and I still have a ton of numbness. It itches sometimes, and I can feel very light touch on the outer lip and chin, but regular feeling is not there. Seems weird that very light touch, I can feel, but if I scratch it with a my nail, I feel nothing.

In fact, lately, the numbness has felt worse than in recent weeks. Am I out of luck after this 12 weeks? How much improvement can I expect by 6 months? I think I've resigned myself to the fact that this may not heal completely, which totally sucks. Who knew that this annoyance could have such a serious effect.

Hello all,

Exactly two weeks ago I had 3 impacted wisdom teeth removed. I was warned that one tooth was very close to the nerve but was assured this shouldn't cause real problem. Since my op I too have been left numb on the right side of my lip, chin, teeth & gums and so therefore I have been very anxious, worried.....and in pain!!

I'm so glad I found this site as it has been very helpful and assuring, although I'm not too keen on the thought of having this feeling (or no feeling) carrying on for months!!

I hope you all recover soon!

Prepare yourself for months of recovery and count yourself lucky if you heal sooner. If you have tingling in the area, they say it's a good sign. I'm looking at 6 months for recovery, just to be prepared. I've made some ok progress in 3 months, so I can only hope it keeps up over the next 3 months. Best of luck!

I found this website when looking for information on nerve damage from getting my wisdom teeth pulled on 12/31/02. I had numbness right after, but then a month or so later I started getting pain in my gum. My OS immediately referred me to a specialist because he said this was a sign of permanent damage. I had surgery in May, which was hell, but hopefully worth it. I currently still have numbness and some slight pain to the gum with touch. I am 33 years old and don't want to have to live the rest of my life waking up with my chin and mouth the first thing on my mind. It's nice to see there's a place I can go to talk with other people that have similar experiences.

after reading a few replys i found it quite alarming that wisdom extractions where sometimes carried out collectivly. at the age of 24 ive had all my wisdoms out as there was no room for them but it was carried out one tooth at a time as it aint very nice plus the area needs time to heal, in all occasions the gum was sewn & i had no real problems except the usual pain & discomfort that follows an extraction.
on the 1st of the month i had root treatment done on my bottom left molar (which ihad to be sedated for as i have a dental phobia). on the 6th i had to return for it to be drilled as i couldnt put any pressure on it. since the moment the numbness worn off the pain kicked in & it has'nt let off. ive had root treatment done 3 times before with no real probs & i dont know why this is causing so much pain. has any one had a similar prob?

Last time I wrote on this post was March 14, about 5 months post-op. A specialist said I'd stop recovering at 6 months post-op, and never regain taste. My feeling is steadily growing and I actually have a slight taste sensation back, nothing much, but I can taste acidity or bitterness, no matter what is on my tongue. So I wouldn't say your time is up after 12 weeks, even if they said mine was up after 24 weeks. I've always been a fast healer, but I have to wait it out on this one, just like everyone else. Waiting is the hardest thing to do, but in some cases, it's the only option.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed a week ago today. Although I did not get dry socket of anything my recovery has been extremely painful and I have yet to eat anything solid. The thing that has most concerned me is the dead numbness of the left side of my chin, lower lip and teeth. My chin felt itchy the first couple of days, but I have had no feeling since. I called my Oral surgeons office and the lady who answered the phone told me that it was completely normal. Of course they also told me I would probably be back to work in 3 days, and I have not been able to go back yet. Did everyone start out like this? Is it really normal?

I am 26 by the way

Donna

   Dear Donna,

If your Inferior Alveolar Nerve or your Lingual Nerve has been damaged, then yes, what you are going through is very normal. I am sorry to hear that you are going through so much pain and discomfort. Everyone here understands what you are going through, so don't be discouraged. You are not crazy, or imagining all this.

Although I did not receive my nerve injury while having wisdom teeth removed, I did receive my nerve injury by injection. Your symptoms are the exact same as mine were. The first week I was in agony. I could only eat soft foods, but because chewing aggrevated my TMJ muscle, and the whole area too, I couldn't eat much. I could not open my mouth very wide for about 6 weeks because the TMJ muscle had been affected. I also was numb in my chin, lip, teeth and gums.

I started taking narcotics for the pain, but all they made me was sick. I was able to get some relief with ibuprofen, 800mg every 3 hrs. I was prescribed amitripyline, 25mg after my OS realized what had happened. By the third week the medication started to kick in, and I began to get some relief.

I am now just over 8 weeks since my injury. I have been off all meds for 5 days and am doing well. I still have some numbness, but only in my chin and about 40% of what it used to be. I was lucky. Some injuries heal more quickly than others, but the injury is still very painful and very real.

I would call your OS again and ask to speak with HIM. Tell him your symptoms, and that you suspect nerve injury. He would normally prescribe either an anticonvulsant or an antidepressant for the pain. These medications interrupt the messages that the nerves send to the brain, thereby relieving the nerve pain as well. If you are having trouble sleeping, don't be shy about asking for something to help you sleep. You can not heal if you can not sleep.
You may also want to start taking a vitamin B complex, especially vitamin B12. This will help with nerve healing. Many have found it to be extremely helpful, including myself. I also found warm compresses to also be helpful. It would stimulate blood flow to the area, and also help the muscles in your face to relax. It also helped relieve some of the pain.

If this doesn't help for you, then you might want to consider seeing a nuerologist for a second opinion. Continue to read through the posts here. You will find a bounty of information that will help you, as well as the best support that anyone could ask for. Please keep us informed with your progress. I hope to hear that you are getting the help you need very soon. Don't dispair, we are all here with you.

Best wishes,
Mary

Hi Mary,

Your comments on this board are so helpful - I so appreciate the time you take.

My question to you is how do you know you received a nerve injury from injection? Was this an anesthetic injection? I ask because when having a root canal done, when I was shot with the anasthetic I felt a strong electric shock. The oral surgeon said not to worry he just hit a nerve. The thing is I have had much pain in my teeth and around my mouth since (7 months ago.) I have been checked for other dental problems but none detected- neuralgia has been mentioned and I take Neurontin for that. TMJ has also been thrown out there as a diagnosis. I never had numbness. Does this sound at all like the injection nerve damage you mention? Obviously I am not healing as fast as did.

Thanks.

   Hi Deb,

I think the hardest part about any illness or condition is not knowing exactly what is going on. I am concerned if you are having pain in your teeth. What kind of tests has your OS performed? Have you seen a nuerologist? There have been people here who have suffered infections after oral surgery. Where in your mouth are you having pain other than your teeth?

I had 3 nerve blocks for a biopsy of a cyst. I was still feeling pain during the biopsy, so my OS gave me a 4th injection. During that injection, I felt an extreme sharp pain shoot down the side of my face to my chin. Following 3 days of sleep, and after the swelling had reduced, I started dealing with unbelievable pain up and down my face, and through my temple. It felt as if someone had hit me over the head with a bat, and had cracked my skull open. My OS couldn't imagine why I was suffering so, until he remembered the last injection he gave me, at which point he prescribed Amitriptyline.

Every injury can be different, and I wouldn't want to diagnose anyone, or have them diagnose themselves. It would be better to read around this site, and compare notes with those posts that you will read here. When you have read enough information to provide you with enough educated questions, then approach your doctor. Make sure you find a doctor that will help you find the answer to your problem. Some of these injuries can get worse if not taken care of. If it is a simple injury, then it will heal in time. However, after 7 months of discomfort I feel that you should really explore every avenue.

You may want to read some of Joannes posts. She developed an infection after oral surgery which developed into acute osteomylitis. This may not be the case for you, but I don't know why your teeth should be hurting if it is just a nerve injury.

Please keep us posted. I pray that you find your answers, and that your road to healing will be short.
Mary

You are right - it is very hard not knowing what this is. It began after a root canal and crown. The tooth was not infected that I got the root canal-it was cracked. The pain is quite strong -Advil does not touch it. I have seen my dentist, two endodontists - one said neuralgia, the other said TMJ. Also, an oral surgeon, a "sort of" TMJ doctor and a neurologist.
I tried a TMJ splint for 3 months which did not seem helpful. (Supposedly, TMJ problems can refer pain to the teeth).

The neurologist diagnosed trigeminal nerve pain - I guess the lower branch of this nerve can cause teeth pain. He prescribed Neurontin which I don't really think is very effective though my dose is still fairly low.

My symptoms do seem different than yours. The pain is constant and in several back teeth and around the lower jaw, sometimes the chin. Not in the TMJ joint though.
I have read Joanne's posts with much concern. The endondontist did xray the bone and felt it looked good and clear. Since there is no pus or swelling or bone loss on the xrays, concerns I had about infection were not taken seriously - I was told they would xray the area again in 6 months.
Anyway thanks for responding/listening. I guess this is some weird phantom tooth pain /neuralgia thing though I have never been sick in my life and I am not a high stress/anxiety type of person and it is so strange that it all happened after the dental work and that weird injection. Yikes.

   Deb,
I am sorry to hear of your pain. Has it gotten worse over the years? I can't imagine 7 years of pain (I think that is what you said).
Mary has given much good advice.
I have a splint which helps sometimes, but not always. I tried the neurontin and it wasn't effective for me.
I wish I had more news to offer, I am still searching for treatment and answers myself.
But the most similar symptom is the pain in the healthy teeth. My lower right molars often feel like they are burning and throbbing and going to explode from the inside out. My current OS says this is caused by damage to the IAN which spread to the nerves of my teeth - just another consideration for you. I would want to know if there is an underlying pathology, but god knows that is so hard to find out.
My latest post was from a 3rd opinion meeting with an OS. It seems to ring true that scans are not necessarily effective tools for diagnosing bone infection.
Trigeminal neuralgia/atypical facial pain was my original OS's diagnosis, which I still don't buy .
I hope you find some answers here and tools to help you find treatment, and be pain-free, or at least manage it well.
Good luck,
Joanne

p.s. neuralgia and phantom pain is not in your head, it is neuropathic pain, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It is very real, regardless of a the cause or ongoing pathology or if nothing at all is going on under there. Hang in there.

Sorry, I misread 7 months for 7 years by mistake.
7 months? I would definitely consider an infection, even low-grade. I would say try a biopsy, but I have found it virtually impossible to get one, even with multiple surgeries.
Hang in there, please come back with updates and any questions.

   Dear Deb.

This is not some wierd phantom pain that you are having. It is a symptom which is telling you that something is wrong. The only problem is, is that you just haven't found the answr yet. If you read around this site, you will find that so many here have been battling very real pain for very long periods of time, and they too are still seeking answers. That doesn't mean that the answers or cure aren't out there either.

Just don't give up. Keep researching information. Education can be your best friend. If one doctor can't help you, then get another referral until you find one that can. Find a way around every wall that comes up in front of you.

Your doctors all seem to think this is nerve pain. What scans or tests have they given you? CT scans are not very conclusive. MRI's may be of some assistance, but some here have mentioned MRN's as being very useful in diagnosing nerve damage.

I agree with Joanne too. Don't rule out an infection. If it is just starting, it may not be detectable yet. Keep an eye on that possibility just in case.

After 5 years of panoramics, my doctors told me that I would not get this cyst I have in my jaw back. It seemed to them that my surgeon had gotten it all. Well, 14 years later, I have this huge cyst in my jaw, that encompases the entire lower left mandible. It had gotten so large, because after such a long period of time, I was sure I had it licked too. SURPRISE! You can never tell. I have learned to never take things for granted. Not everything can be detected while in its early stages.

Get educated, explore all possibilities, and get the medication that you need. If the Neurontin isn't helping, have your doctor give you something else. Many people have said here that they have not had much luck with Neurontin, so I'm not surprised that you have had the same response. My doctor almost put me on that, but he put me on the Amitriptyline instead.

Deb, I truly wish you all the best in finding the answers you need. Don't let anyone discount your pain. It's your body's way of telling you that something is wrong.

Please keep us informed. I'm sorry that I can't give you the answers that you need. I know how frustrated you are. We are here if you need us.

Mary

Just wanted to tell you my experience , maybe it will help. My problem started as a headache which radiated from my jaw on the left side. I have a deformed condyle on that side so my bite is funny. I naturally thought the pain was from this. The mouth gaurd made it worse and it started waking me up at night. I went to a dentist who took some x-rays and did some overlays on cracked teeth on that side. It felt better for about a week, then started to wake me up at night. 4aleve and one bc powder would'nt help. Like you I had no sighn of infection. At one point I did have some slight swelling during the time that I thought it was my jaw, and my dentist thought this might be a pulled ligament from my funny bite and the muscle was inflamed. Still thinking it might be my jaw I mentioned that the filling I had done previously on that side was still slightly sensitive and that i avoided eating on that side. I thought the lopsided eating might be causing the problem, I was getting desperate and had even had suicidal thoughts at this point. He decided to do a root canal on that tooth , and the nerve had mummified, which means at some point it could have caused me significant pain, and could still be uncomfortable but because the nerve was now dead was probably not the cause of the horrible shooting, aching, pulsating pain I was experiencing. A couple of weeks later the pain was still there still no sighn of infection, no fever or swelling. My dentist prodded at the overlay on the cracked tooth next to the root canal and detemined that it was a little loose. Fixed it, felt better for about a week,(one aleve instead of 3 or 4). Then I started waking me again. Now at least we knew it was the tooth and not my jaw. He put a cap on it, and that helped the most so far but it still ached. We elected to do a root canal on it although because of the crack he was'nt sure how it would do. We did it on a wed. at first no problem, just took one aleve and I was fine, then sunday hit. I could not get the pain to go away, no medicine would even touch the pain I was incapacitated, I called the dentist who refered me to an oral surgeon to have the tooth pulled, still not becouse of infection, but becouse of a wrinkle in the tooth that may be a crack near the root. Well I had the tooth extracted and it was'nt cracked it was very infected. I have been going through this for over a year. Even if theres no sighn of infection take precautionary measures anyway.

I really can understand what you are going through, although our surgeries were different mine were wisdom teeth extractiion l have been left with simular symptoms as you and joanne also pain in perfectly healthy teeth and after 17 months on the Dr merrygo round the best they have come up with is maybe TMJ related as like you said this can refer pain to your teeth and l also have given a splint a go but to no relief, neuralgia derrrr l know l have nerve pain!!! ATFP what a load of rubbish,l have symptoms and they give these symptoms a name cause they think it will make you feel better but as mary hit the nail on head perfectly these symptoms are our bodies way of saying hey something is not right, l truly hope you fibnd better more educated Drs than l have found after all this time,l have today after 17 months finally had a MRI cause l put my foot down if it comes back OK l really dont know where to go from here anymore Australia is a great country but medically advanced it is not, l really am at the top of the tree treatment wise with one of the few specialists in the whole country and the best he can do is put a fancy name on my symptoms its slowly driving me insane and l wonder some times just how much longer l can find the drive to keep going love ness

   Hi Ness,

Yes it certainly is a merry go round. I started with the TMJ diagnosis and now it appears I am being steered back round to that. Splints have not helped me yet either. It may be TMJ though the joints don't bother me and I have minimal clicking so I dunno. 17 months- wow! Yes, I know I have nerve pain too, I also struggle with the thought that something must be causing it. Please let us know how the MRI turns out - I have not had one of those yet. We do have qualified doctors here, but also very conservative about running tests - the expense maybe, I dunno. I guess I need to go in and scream in pain and act all crazy-like; lol.

I hope you find answers, I am so sorry for your pain. Thank you for responding. There are great people on this board; I am sorry I may be headed back to the TMJ board - I rarely get a response there as they seem to have their own little "clique". Well, even if I go back there I will continue to watch this board and everyone's progress. Amazing how fascinated I have become with dental issues these days - never dreamed it was all so complicated.

Take care, I hope today is a 0 to 2 for you!
Deb

I hope you are better by now. I have had numbness and tingling from an abcess and root canal for 3 weeks now. My dentist told me yesterday that it can be from combination of pressure from infection and simple bruising of the nerve bundle. He also told me that nerves recover slowly such as a 3mm cut in the nerve, according to scientific theory, should heal at the rate of 1mm per month. I also just read article at www.drfine.com/article about a dental assistant who had similar problem as result of the anesthesia itself, but recoverd very quickly with heat applications and Motrin. Good luck - hope you recover soon.

Wow, what a great web site!

One week ago today I had my impacted wisdom teeth removed and have since been left with a numb lower jaw (chin, lip, gums, teeth) and a panicked fear I was be left like this for the wolves, but my OS believes it will heal, nerves just take time (months).

What a comfort this web site has been knowing there are others who are going throught the same thing, and can affirm my OS and reasearch. Thanks to those who come back to report their experience, and offer some good suggestions.

Plus it gives me a chuckle to know i'm not the only one feeling as though I have a board is strapped to the front of my face, or my lipstick ends up like looking like Happy the Clown's.
