"dry tongue / phantom pains"

does anyone else experience dryness of the tongue on the effected side after LND?
Each morning I wake up this is particularly noticeable....why??//

Does any one else find that by applying pressure to one part of their effected side transferes electric pulses to another part??/ When I brush my teeth I experience great discomfort from electric pain in my tongue. Again ...why?????

I can't get this info elsewhere so I thought I would through it over to the real experts...LND suffers
Thanks in anticipation
Louise

I have had the same thing for two weeks now post op. I describe the symptoms as numb, yet painful at times. some days worse than others. When I try to talk, it just gets worse. It's like a huge vaccum sucking the life and moisture out of your tongue with pain as well, especially while in contact with toothpaste. I also bite my tongue and then again before it can heal just by eating. My life has been altered. I have a question for you, how long ago for you was the surgery and were you verbally warned that this was a risk? My oral surgeon said nothing verbally, just a form given to me by the receptionist. (I was in pain) Have you or anyone else out there thought of suing the oral surgeon? This life altering. My symptoms are numerous. Also, for anyone out there, does anyone know if some sensation in the tongue is optimistic with lingual nerve damage? Please, any response... Gail.

The only thing I can speak of is the dry mouth, my injury is not LND. But there is a mouthwash called Biotene (avail at drugstores, there is also Biotene toothpaste) that restores the natural enzymes of saliva to the mouth to prevent other complications from dry mouth - it is very gentle and antibacterial too. I use it several times a day.

Any sensation in the tongue is definitely optimistic. It is only in the case of absolutely no sensation will a surgeon recommend surgery. It indicates that the nerve has not been completely severed and given time will regrow and hopefully all sensation will recover. 2 weeks post op is not long. You must be a new Gail like #3, so people here may get your case all confused with others. Maybe post a last initial. Sorry 'bout your situation. I am same. Di

I posted on the 9th as just Gail. I hear there are other s named Gail. It is good to see I'm not alone and thank you for the words of optimism that were well needed. Some days are better than others with the burning/sucking feeling. Have any others found that? Also, days where I can start out the day by myself, therefore not talking, are better for those symptoms as well as for the incredible dryness associated with this phenomenon. I am going to try the Biotene. Thanks go out for that suggestion! Gail/ photog

Hi-I will ask this question when I go in for a check-up on the 17th. What do you know as to the significance of this? Than you, Gail.

thanks joanne for the mouthwash tip .
i would also like to find out from barb what the sig of the injection is ....like you gail, i will be following that up but at the moment i am finding it difficult getting medical info from the dental centre (who now no longer employ the butcher that changed my life 21 m0nths ago).

My new dentist told me about a dental seminar he went to in sydney re LND and impacts on life etc - he said it was like a recall of my life changes ...anyway he has written a referal to this pain management clinic where the presenter of this particlar seminar operates.
I need to wait another 6 weeks for an appoint. but i am hoping for an earlier time.
I ahve cont.with Gabapentin which is offering some relief as to the IN YOUR FACE pain sensations. I have been able to return to ork full time which has been a n achievement for me but i am finding that ther is a cost as i have no energy left after a day at work to be he mothe and wife i used to be. i get very drowsy taking the drug but dare no reduce the dosage or terminate use for absolute and utter fear that the pain and speech difficulties would return......i would never be able to continue living tha way ever again.

I was always terriby hindered by tongue cramping and an increadible 'heaviness' that i could never feel i could accurately described but the description of the SUCKING feeling of the tongue is spot on .....i forget at present who asked if anyone else had the sucking feeling >>>>>>>yes, yes , yes and thank you for the comment as it has provided me with a much more satisfying description rather than heaviness. This is an increadibly draining sensation that often causes an aching that then compounds everything else.

i never cease to learn something from this site - thanks to those who offer their knowledge and experience so freely
louise
