"Lingual Nerve repair surgery (neurooraphy?) f"

I'm having nerve repair Friday for my right lingual nerve that was severed during wisdom tooth extraction. Any info out there from people who have had it? The doctors didn't offer much in the way of recovery other than "everyone's different". Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Gus

There was another lady that posted some time ago about a severed lingual nerve. Her surgery was 1 year after the fact. Her pain went away but some numbness remained. I'd sure take that if I could get it.

Good Luck. Make sure your surgeon has done these before.

   hi gus,
i have lingual nerve damage from wisdom tooth extraction 6 years ago..from what ive gathered here i do believe the injection and the extraction caused mine...
i had repair surgery 6 1/2 months after the extraction..it was acually called search and possibly repair surgery..there was no way to tell what was wrong until the omfs sliced my jaw wide open and took a look..my nerve was not severed..and i hope yours is not..you must have all the horrible feelings that i felt..how far are you into the injury?
my preop diagnosis was right lingual nerve paresthesia and dysestesia..operation was right lingual nerve external neurolysis, excision of lateral adhesive neuromas..post op... lots of percocet..

my tongue snapped back into place after 3 weeks..regained feeling in the tip and back of my tongue within 4 months..was put on neurontin and flexaril to control the burning tongue, the electric shooting pains and clamp like feeling on my jaw for the next 2 years..
the middle of my tongue all the way to my gum is still numb including the outer gum which was not numb before surgery..thats the risk i took..
its a gamble what the outcome will be..the other feelings exist on a lower level and not 24/7 anymore.. thank god..
the feeling youll get a few hours after surgery will feel like a miracle.. it did for me anyways..until the all the numbing stuff and the meds wear off..the pain was torture..i never want to do that again..i wish you the best of luck..keep us all posted as soon as your able...i dont know anyone else who had repair surgery here..

Wow. what a great response in such a short time. Yes, the doctors at the University of Florida are calling it a "search" that lasts for two hours with possible repair. The have offered a collegen tube or cadaver nerve to use as a conduit. I cannot feel the right side of my tongue and jaw line since the extraction in November of 07. He told me the taste is pretty much gone secondary to my age. (30; apparently that's old in nerve years....26 seems to be the good side of the bell curve.) But sensation may return. Usually 50% of the time. I am a little scared about going "under" since I have not before. But considering I bit my tongue twice yesterday and feel like I just left the dentist office constantly, it's a chance I'm willing to take. Thank you all for your help. You have been such a great support since this all happened.

BTW....they called my injury IAN damage since I have numbness to my chin....and Lingual Nurve anathesia. The doctor and resident stuck me 15 times to draw blood on the right side of my tongue and was unable to feel any of it. A few questions:

How long were you off work?
Was there a lot of swelling?
When could you comfortably starting eating solid again?
Did they tell you you couldn't stick your tongue past your teeth for a month?

Thanks again, you all are the best!

Gus, sorry to a bearer of bad news.. the mouth is the most sensitive area on our body..we all know what its like to bite our tongue on the good side..it hurts bad. the day after surgery i looked like i had a grapefruit stuck in my jaw and alot of bruising..eating solid food was not on the menu for months.. you wont be able to barely open your mouth to stick your tongue out.. i remember cutting up a strawberry into about 10 pieces and that was hard to eat..a month later..that was my first solid food..prepare yourself for a liquid diet..jello and ice cream is real good..and soup.. yummy ...no brushing on that side for months...lots of stitches..dont expect to go to work for quite some time..youll want to stay in bed...and just for your info my nuerologist told me that taste and feeling are 2 different nerves..i regained taste only on the back of my tongue.. so i have strange taste going on there which is a little abnormal..but im used to it now..

I didn't have the tongue problem, only lip and chin. I also could not open my mouth very wide for weeks. Christmas dinner from a blender was a real "treat"....NOT. I drank alot of soups and sometimes blended them if they had chunky food in them. Liquid diet for atleast a month (if memory serves me right). It will be well worth whatever you go thru if your nerve heals. I'd do it if I could find someone that would try it. No one would touch me.

   pim..
did they only pull the tooth out after the your worst nightmare ?
i do read your posts and i know your misery !! even though our injuries are different.. theyre still oral injuries...ill give a better picture of my nerve repair surgery..
during my surgery they sliced my gum from the molar to the canine..both sides..they sliced my cheek on the inside from the canine back to the old extration site..peeled back and wide open is how they seen what was going in my mouth..along with removing scar tissue they removed a piece of silver filling...
pim are you 100% sure theres nothing left for you to do?

They pulled the tooth when they did the surgery to remove the overfill. Sargenti can leach out of the tooth and could have continued to cause more damage. There are still specks of it in my jaw that the surgeon did not get out. It makes me sick everytime I see it on an xray.

There is nothing left to do but take drugs and live each day step by step. I could not get a surgeon to do a nerve graft on me and they scared me enough about the possiblity of the pain getting worse so I stopped looking. My nerve was "fixated" by the formaldehyde and will never regrow or repair itself.

Sargenti is bad stuff. Make sure it isn't used on you....ever.

im one of the lucky ones here thats never had to have a root canal..yet..and believe me if i ever do i will find out what they use..i see what it has done to you..you know when i was contemplating my nerve repair surgery..which by the way..they said, something must be pressing on your nerve for you to have all these out of the ordinary symptoms...and the surgery itself was not stamped as cure all..they scared me to death about how it could be worse afterwards..i just couldnt imagine anything worse at the time...thats why i went forward with the surgery...it was a awful experience and it still took a good 4 years to feel better..i cant say id be where i am today without it...im just glad i made it this far..mostly just 24/7 numbness is the worst of mine after 6 years...pim...does your pain remain the same, after all this time ? and what does fixated by the formaldehyde mean ?

I have had ZERO recovery from the numbness or pain since the root canal. It was "heaven" right after the surgery, being completely numb. It made me sick when the numbness started wearing off and what was there before the surgery was the same afterwards.

Fixative explanation...as I understand it from my surgeon. If you drop acid on your skin, your skin will coagulate (spelling??) and build a barrier to keep the acid from continuing to penetrate thru it. Paraformadehyde (powder) or formaldehyde are fixatives. If you put a drop of them on your skin, they are designed to continue to penetrate and "fixate" until the (para)formaldehyde is no longer active. I have read from the Sargenti supporters themselves that Sargenti continues to "disinfect" for 7-10 days...therefore every day that went by in the beginning is another day of more destruction. On the 8th day, the numbness in my chin turned into burning pain (which I foolishly thought that maybe the nerve was getting better). It was a drastic change which I never understood until I read about the 7-10 days. It has never changed since. Basically, part of my nerve was embolmed.

This was my first root canal.

Well the surgery didn't turn out so well. They spent two hours cleaning the area of scar tissue and were never able to find the nerve. So, no nerve, no repair. Also, they had a problem getting my urine catheter; they said I have some abnormality where I have two entry pathways and ones a dead end. Either way, I have to wear a urine bag for ten days while it heals. And there's no chance of any recovery since they never found the nerve. That's it in a nutshell.....

   hey gus...
dont even think that the surgery was unsuccessful yet...all they did to me was remove the scar tissue !!
and im a hell of alot better now than before surgery....it still took a few years and alot of drugs to feel better...
as a matter of fact...
my surgery was in may 2002..i only found out in march 2006..the real extent of the surgery...when i got my records from the hospital where the surgery took place..it took me that long to get up enough nerve to even want to read about it...
i could post the whole surgery in detail if anyone really wanted to know the full extent of one surgeons hand...other wise my version is posted above..
so sorry about the other problem you have going on.. bummer !! hows the swelling and the bruising ? and the pain ?? hang in there...
