"wisdom tooth extraction - post-op jaw pain"

Hi - Davey here. So glad to find this forum.
About 2 months ago I went to a dentist to check on a mild toothache I was experiencing. The dentist told me that the pain was probably due to something related a nearby wisdom tooth, and that extracting all my wisdom teeth would not only solve the current pain but would keep future dental problems from occurring.
He then suggested an oral surgeon who might do the surgery and a week or so later, I went ahead and had the surgery (a rather expensive medical treatment Not covered by my rather expensive Health Insurance.) Now for the past 6 weeks I've been in Constant, Severe Pain from the extraction wound area and it radiates up through my left jaw and temple. Also, I'm a professional musician and have noticed that hearing in my left ear has been significantly reduced since the surgery and pain.

I've been back to the oral surgeon 3 times since the surgery regarding the pain (which happens to be on the opposite side of my mouth from where the original "mild" toothache was) only to be told (time & again) that this particular lower left wisdom tooth was very difficult to extract. As well, because of my age (51), that it may take longer to heal. So... more anti-biotics & pain pills that don't help!

Although I didn't experienced ongoing post-op numbness, I've recently began feeling a bit of numbness in my lower left jaw area.

Has anyone else on this site experienced severe jaw pain and hearing loss six weeks>plus afer surgery?

I'm thinking about contacting a neurologist and/or an ear/hearing specialist. And what's the difference between an Oral Surgeon and a Maxill Facial Surgeon?

Thanks for all the info and support.

Davey

You should contact your surgeon, you probably have a dry socket. I developed the same problem. You will have to go back about every 2-3 days and they will insert a piece of gauze dipped in a clove oil paste. Should go away in a couple of weeks.

I have been going through this for almost 5 weeks now. The original dentist has finally made me an appointment to see the owner of the practice, however he is on vacation at the moment.
she said they will probably be sending me to an oral surgeon. She knows something is wrong with my jaw but wont say what. If I place my fingers in front of my ears I can feel some movement in the opposite side but not the side of extraction. If you find out anything, let me know, I will do the same.

I'd also like to know if theres a difference between oral surgery & maxil facial surgery. It seems theres no definate professional to go to when we get injured by a dental procdure; mine was done by an OS, so I think I need referring to a neurologist, since my worst pains are nerve type.
Ann, where do you feel movement if you place your fingers in front of your ears?

I can feel a knot moving on the opposite side of the injury, and on the injured side it is just like an indentation. You have to try and open and close your mouth to feel this movement while your fingers are in front of your ears.

Hi Davey,

I had almost exactly the same type of pain following my wisdom teeth extraction a year ago. They first treated me for dry sockets, but after my mouth had completely healed the pain was still present, so the OS sent me to a neurologist. That is probably the best place to start, although the neurologist might then send you on to a dentist specializing in facial pain--they seem to be the most up to date on the latest treatments for nerve pain, TMJ, etc. They usually have orofacial pain departments at major university hospitals. I hope you can get this cleared up quickly--unfortunately I still haven't been able to find a treatment that helps. Even if they can't eliminate your pain completely, it is still worth consulting with these sort of doctors because they can often find a medication or combination of medications that will relieve much of your pain. Good luck!

Stacy

and Ann--the symptoms you describe sound like indicators of TMJ. It might be worth checking with a dentist to see if this diagnosis applies to you.

Today I finally seen the owner of the practice. I received the ice test and the sharp object test. Apparently they are very confused because I felt pain near extraction site and middle of bottom front teeth are very sensitive. Also there is an area of my tongue that felt nothing even though I dont feel like my tongue is numb. So now they want to see me once a month until I am better. The numbness in my lip and chin are still the same. My mouth will only open two fingers wide, My ear, gums, jaw, and throat are still swollen and very painful, this is supposed to be from a nerve?! He didnt even check my jaw at all, but they did do an xray of my bottom front teeth and I cant understand why! My last appointment I was told there was something going on with my jaw and I will be going to an os and now nothing has changed and I only have a nerve branch trying to heal! I am calling my MD tomorrow to get his opinion since it is now 5 weeks with no change and maybe he will give me a referral. I think I am going to go crazy before I get answers! I am going to take my ibuprofen and go to bed and hope tomorrow is better!!!

Oh Anne, I really feel for you. I know how confusing it is when no- one you see gives any proper answers. I feel I'm getting the run around too. It's probably because the practice is trying to cover itself over the mistakes they made during the procedure. I'm in UK, but maybe we need to find out if there is a body which we can report these mistakes to, & who will recommend the professional we need to see now in order to diagnose & cure the problems we've been given.
I had both lower wisdoms removed, & have a 100% numb right side of tongue (maybe I feel a few mm on the right tip, as tip is very sore); I tried what you said about opening the mouth while feeling in front of the ear; I have a lump on the right side; thanks for that info; I'd never have discovered it otherwise & since my OS wont give me an MRI, I'd never have known. My left lip/chin has partial numbness. My left edge of tongue gets very sore too every few days. My OS is referring me to his colleage who is miles away, 8 weeks later, who is head of dentistry at a university but has some research in 'perceived disability from nerve injuries' (not sure it sounds like the right person to see myself?)
Good luck with getting the correct help that you deserve.

You are having TMJ symtoms as well as nerve injury. Insist on seeing an Oral Surgeon. I can't recall where you are located.

I am in central Ohio. My MD has seen me once so I am hoping he will give me a referral to an Os. Do you know of a good one in this area? Thanks everyone for your help.

I cannot see my MD for a week because he is now on vacation. I am still no better and have discovered my mouth is crooked when I open it. Is this also a sign of TMJ? I am glad I have all of you to answer questions and help through this frustating time. I am also glad to see I have been able to give some info. Thanks for everything again!

I was experiencing no pain at all and went to the dentist because with my tongue, i felt a hole in a tooth. Well, he said he had to fill the cavity, so he did and the pain began. It was so intense that i had to get toradol shots from the hospital to numb the pain - from a cavity???!!
Anyhow, i went back and complained and was told that it was a bad site for a cavity. yeah well, that doesn't remove the present pain does it? so my only other option was to pull the tooth. This was one week ago and i am still on those toradol, actually, ive been given the shots for home use because my pain is so intense. i'm also using tylenol with codeine but i see no change. if i miss a dose of pain meds, i'm almost throwing up from the pain.
Anyhow, i went to my family doctor and he let me know that the dentist had removed the tooh and broken my jaw bone. Well, the dentist never told me that. Anyhow, I'm planning on suing the dentist now for time off work and lots of bills to pay. I have been one month offf work since this entire ordeal. i sohuld have never gone to this dentist. Furthermore, i've got some appointments scheduled for other work and i am cancelling them. i cant feel the left side of my face and i can't hear anything from my left ear either. so my friend, you are not alone

I seen my family doctor on Monday and finally I am getting a referral! It has now been seven weeks! He took blood test in case of infection but they were okay. He beleives my jaw is dislocated since it is distorted. Still have all the pain and symptoms and cant hardly wait to see the OS!
