Hi, my name is Steve, I had four wisdom teeth extracted on August 11th, 2004. I got them out two weeks before leaving for my first year of college figuring that I would be fully recovered by the first day of school. Two days after arriving, I woke up and the entire right side of my face had swelled up. It turned out that I got an infection. I went on antibiotics, but the infection came back and I had to get the area drained. After recovering from that surgery, I thought things would finally be back to normal. However, I still had a numb patch on my lower right chin from the original wisdom teeth surgery. It never really bothered me and I figured it would just go away with time. I started to play with the numb area a lot, and I must have triggered some sort of nerve because now my entire right chin and lip are extremely sensitive. Whenever I touch anywhere in that area, I get a shooting tightness type pain in the nearby gum and teeth. Also, two of my bottom teeth have this really tight feeling whenever I open my mouth. It has become more difficult to talk, laugh, smile, eat, etc. Whenever I drink something cold, it feels like my right chin is wet! I get a tingly feeling whenever I press my teeth together, usually during eating. I don't mean to complain because fortunately I don't have constant pain and other people on this site have it way worse than me, but I still have been mildly depressed ever since, and I really don't think I'm going to get better even though I know it can take up to a year and I'm only at 3.25 months. My oral surgeon took an x-ray and didn't see anything conspicuously wrong with the nerve, and he said that surgery is an option even though he doesn't recommend it and it is not very successful. It sounds pretty scary too. I also have this weird pain in one of my fingers now, and I am pretty confident it's not related, so hopefully I'm right. Anyway, this site has been very helpful (I've been reading it for about 2 months now), it is definitely nice to know I'm not the only one having these problems. Good luck to everyone with their recovery! |
