"Still numb 4 days later"

LAST EDITED ON May-26-08 AT 06:02 PM (CST)

Hi all,

I did some reading on the site and found it very interesting. I thought I'd post here for some possible advice.

Four days ago I had some of my wisdom teeth extracted under IV and local. I havent had a lot of pain and everything looks to be ok in my mouth. The one problem I do have is I am still numb in the left side of my chin, lip and gum. It seems to be a very localized area because I have feeling in the corner of my mouth and the back molar and a very small area of gum between two of my lower teeth but otherwise am still completely numb. Occasionally I will get an itch in the area or a weird tingly feeling but it seems to come and go. I get a feeling of "pressure" on the numb area sometimes too which seems to get worse toward the evening. Is it possible that the swelling is putting pressure on the nerve and that is why I'm still numb or is the nerve likely damaged?

My follow-up appt is later this week and I didnt really want to go in earlier since the doctor is in another town and there's not really anything they can do anyhow. But I was wondering what others in similar situations thought? If it is nerve damage, will that show up on an xray at this point so I can at least know how bad things may be? Thanks in advance for your help!

   Shadow,

Call your OS and talk to him about this issue. Don't wait until your follow-up appointment. If it is swelling causing this issue he may want to give you a short course of Steroids. Also he may tell you to take anti-inflamatories to help with swelling, but you need to see what your OS recommends.

The itchy feeling is a very good sign that things are healing. You may feel many other weird and uncomfortable sensations during this healing. Hang in there. It can take awhile for the nerve to recover.

Take Care

"T"

Thanks for the advice:-) I called my OS this morning and found out that the roots of the tooth were wrapped around the nerve when the tooth was extracted. They said the nerve itself was not severed or torn though and I should regain feeling. Thanks again!

this sounds exactly what happened to me 10 days ago when I had the bottom left wisdom tooth out. My dentist, who is very good and in his 60's, told me that he has extracted 30,000 wisdom teeth in his life and I am only the 2nd person to have the roots of the tooth going around the nerve...the second! I feel so very special.

Anyway, the day after the surgery I began getting little twinges of nerves across the lip, and now (10 days later) have full blown nerve aching and twinging and tickling 24/7. I know it's good, but it's quite bizarre and gets 'worse' at night. But I know it's for the best.

Things I have done and taken:

- Acupuncture with electric treatment through the needles to get the muscles and nerves tweaking. This felt fantastic and for the rest of that day, and since, my nerves have been going crazy.
- Naturopathic herb liquid (5mL x 4 daily) to reduce swelling and stimulate nervous system.
- 6 Ultraclean EPA/DHA fish oil tablets daily
- 6 PPMP tablets daily
- 4 x 1000mg vitamin c daily
- Vitamin B daily

I highly recommend acupuncture. If you don't know anyone ask around and you will soon get a recommendation. Naturopathics are always good in my experience too.

Good luck.

   Kahuna,

Just want to say that acupuncture was the only therapy that helped me with my nerve damage. Since I am an acupuncturist by profession I was able to treat myself on a daily basis. Not easy sticking needles in your own tongue, mouth, face, arm and hand, but it does help. I also found hot salt soaks to help along with some massage of the gum and area where the needle was inserted. It is still painful to massage the area but after 11 months my symptoms are lessening. Best of luck to you and everyone... I KNOW how horrific this injury is. Be strong and patient, most folks heal within a year or less.

Bob

couldn't agree more.....hope is sustaining me at the moment, that and an amazingly supportive family whom I wish were with me.

I will beat this, it is just going to take a lot of time and I think every day i am coming to understand that more clearly.

10 days out from 5 months of chronic pain I wouldn't have dreamt this in a million years. i've had terrible days, poor days and things i things are finally start to turn.

I've come to appreciate and cherish the small things in life that ordinarily would register.....the day i could smile without pain made me cry.

Good luck
