"ear pain after wisdom tooth extraction"

had 2 wisdom teeth extracted on 4-28 & my right ear is still giving me unbelieveable pain. the tooth giving me hell was RIGHT on the nerve - surgeon said most guys would refuse to even pull it. used to get crippling ear/throat infections when i was younger - not sure if that has anything to do with it. but i cant freakin function - my throat was killing me too for like 5 days afterwards, to the point of not swallowing. had my tooth (the hole) packed twice - just had it taken out today and within 30 minutes the pain starts right back up again. Dr. did not pack hole at all right after the surgery and i had the worst weekend of my life - i thought my ear was gonna explode.

piercing, popping pain....i'm about to go non-linear. my back is broken in two places & i can handle that, but i can't handle ear pain for cripes sake. hydrocodone did absolutely nothing to ease it up, and still doesnt. i still have crazy pain in the socket itself, but the ear pain overshadows it most of the time.

I am wondering if you don't have a TMJ injury or something. Where are you?

In addition to possible TMJ damage (that's your jaw joint), I wonder if there isn't an infection - can you get that checked ASAP? I asked because you had the tooth packed several times, don't know if you had a dry socket.

At anyrate, pls see your dentist/OS as soon as possible, or get a second opinion...

Good luck
Joanne

i've been in to see oral surgeon about twice a week since the surgery (paking & unpacking) - if i miss anymore work I'm gonna get fired (even tho i have to make up for all time lost each time i go). He says theres no dry socket. i thought about infection too, and asked about it, he said no infection. i was on antibiotics for a week & the swelling went down. My constant 103 fever JUST went down over the past couple days. this OS is known for being brutal, but my lord....i had no probs in 2000 when he pulled 3 TEETH for goodness sake - i needed no drugs or anything.

does ice or heat make the problem worse? i need some sort of freakin relief.

thanks for all your replies.

I don't see how he could say you don't have an infection when you had a fever that high? Maybe you could get a second opinion from another oral surgeon because if you have an infection you don't want to let it go on. If there was no infection, why was he packing it?
And if your OS does not help you with the pain (you mentioned him being brutal) you need to find another OS or go to your regular doctor and explain how much pain you are in and that so far, it hasn't gone away.

   thought i should clarify...

he's packing my socket to ease the pain. i guess theres a numbing agent in it or something? but it makes the pain much easier to deal with - i can actually eat. thing is, once he takes it out 2 days later, the pain starts right back up.

cant afford it - between the dentist and the OS i've spent 3k in the past 2 months - i'll now have to go sell my ars on the street just to pay for it. so glad i went to college for 5 years - can't believe i still have to work 3 jobs.

this OS is one of the best in orlando, so anywhere else i go will actually be a downgrade of sorts i guess. but i made a socket-packing appointment with him for tomorrow & plan on MAKING him talk to me about all this instead of rushing me out the door.

wish me luck...pray for me...whatever it is each of you do. Thanks again all.

Hi there, reading up on your posts - you definitely have a dry socket, if the numbing clove gel (packing) helps. BUT, if you had a fever like that and the pain isn't getting better, you could have an infection spreading into the bone. I'm not trying to scare you, but this happened to me in 2002 just the way yours is starting - Dr. B knows my whole story.

PLEASE borrow the cash if you have to, find a way with work, because it could turn really bad...

As for ice or heat, neither is a good idea right now, because ice will constrict bloodflow and heat will aggravate it is it's an infection. You could try luke-warm moist compresses.

I hope you can get this looked at ASAP.

Wishing well,
Joanne

Are you ok now? did you get a second opinion?? or did your orig doc eventually figure it out? hope you're all better now...cause i'll tell you what, i cannot handle one more life-long pain problem.

thanks again kids.

I agree, ice is not indicated at this time.

Yes, when you go, be persistant, and don't leave without some kind of idea as to a diagnosis.

that's definitely the plan. he's just not the most personable guy if you know what i mean.

i think i've lost all faith in the medical field because i don't feel dr.s listen to their patients anymore - hell maybe it's just me, but i do know that now all my back & heart probs are so far gone that i'm pretty much screwed unless i win the lotto (which i don't even play), and I'll be livid if this tooth thing becomes yet another long-term thing all because oral boy isn't hearing me. Obviously this loss of faith does not include y'all who put in extra time to talk to complete strangers like me. Its nice to know someone gives a rats ars and can offer useful advice.

Thanks again boys & girls.

Hi, I feel sorry that you are having so much pain too. I also am dealing with extraction problems and I hope one day we all will heal. It sure is a shame that there is so many people like us going to a site like this and getting more reliable information and comfort than we would get at a dr. office. I hope that your appt. goes well and if this doc doesn't help you you need to go to another. I have seen so many and am still trying to find the right one that can help me. I pray for you and everyone else to get better.
Take care.
Shannan

   Hey there,
Looks like you're getting some feedback here, and glad to read that you are heading to the OS.

In a nutshell, I did get a second opinion, but 5 months into the ordeal...I had a total of 3 jaw bone debridement surgeries (one by the original OS - he knew there was a problem), and by then the infection had spread into the nerve canal and damage the IAN (inferior alveolar nerve). The pain was horrendous. I still have pain from the nerve damage, I pray the infection doesn't return, and most recently my jaw became partially displaced (joint and socket) which is taking months to heal, all as a result of this over the 3.5 years. I don't want to depress you I just want you to get treatment so that you do not walk down my path. I take pain/nerve meds to control the pain, and I have a bite plate and now a wire appliance to keep my jaw sitting in the right position (for now).

I really hope and pray your appt goes well, let us know. Come back here with any news or questions, this is a great team of people here - they saved me when I stumbled into this site 3 years ago...

Wishing well,
Joanne

   wow. you're freakin me out.

Just joshin'. I know you're just trying to get me on the right track. i did go to the OS & got a repack yesterday, but because it took so long to even get out of the waiting room, i had to just let him do his thing & not ask all the questions i wanted to....my lunch hour was almost over & i'm sick of my boss saying how florida is a right to work state & they don't HAVE to let me go to the doctor at all.

i'm going again tomorrow morning before work to have him swap out the pack for the weekend & intend on taking my list of questions with me. He said that i should not still be in pain, but that every so often, he'll get a patient that has probs like me. He said it's always women and they were all between the ages of like 35-40 something - my description to a tee. That could be a ploy for all know. Even with the packing in right now, i can still feel my ear popping and piercing with pain. Not throbbing, piercing. i have the exact same prob with my leg - to the point that i look down expecting to see blood cause its so sudden & out of nowhere. feels like i got shot.

jeeze i hope you get all better soon - there's no way i could ever afford all that treatment which is why I decided to check the net & see what info i can find out early. Again, so glad i went to college for 5 years - but im not bitter. check out the site tomorrow so you can get an update! wish me luck.

Thanks again

just thought of a couple more things that i've noticed that's weird. theres a hard lump or knot of some sort on the surgery site on inside of my cheek. It was very tiny right after the surgery but has progressively gotten bigger and hurts more when i press on it (while brushing my teeth or using the irrigation thingy, etc). I've asked him about it twice & he says it'll go away, but it hasn't. thing is, you really won't know it's there unless you run your finger across it, and i don't think he's done that.

one more thing, and maybe this is stupid, but my throat looks different. Being the artist that i am, i'd rather sketch a pic to show you, but i'll try to explain it. the right side on my throat (this is the side giving me probs), the skin to the right of the little uvula or whatever that hangy slimy thing is called, it's taller & wider than the left side. If you can imagine, the mcDonalds M-like shape that the back of your throat forms, is lopsided - the right side is WAY higher & wider than the left. It wasn't like that before.

thoughts?

Could the left side be swollen making it appear smaller than the right? But that wouldn't make sense as you say the right side is the one giving you probs, so why would the left be the swollen side? not sure, but thats all I can think of.

The little hard knot inside your cheek sounds like the scarring from the extraction opening( I have this) but not sure why it would have gotten any bigger or painful, unless it again is swollen or inflamed and then I would suspect an infection.

Hope you improve soon
J

Could it be some sort of abcess? Mostly because it hurts and is getting bigger makes me think that. Someone here had a piece of bone work its way out after dental surgery. So maybe that is what it is?

I hope you can ask him all your questions and if he doesn't seem concerned, please go and get a second opinion.

Yeah - get him to tell you what that lump is - scar tissue, granulation tissue, he should be able to at least identify it.

I can't believe the things your boss says about right to work. That's awful.

As for women, he might be saying it as a ploy, but there is a real risk with women after the age of 30 (I was 30 when I had mine out) - bones, if you are on birth control that can affect clotting (it did with me at the time), there are other factors that can contribute to problems like smoking as well. Don't know if any of these apply to you. But our bodies don't heal as well as we get older, and 30 is a sort of benchmark.

I really hope I didn't scare you - I just posted back to someone else - CBailey - you can see my post there on what happened.

I just HATE the idea that someone could unknowingly go through what happened to me - and there have been others on this board in way worse shape than me during the acute infection phase.

Keep us posted, I hope you improve/heal, also, speaking of looking in your mouth - what to you see at the extraction site where the gauze is - can you take a flashlight and describe it - white, yellow, pink, dark red/brown??

Wishing you well,
Joanne

hello kids. Thought i'd let y'all know I'm feeling much better now.

After i got that last packing out last week i seemed to hold up ok. The lump on the surgery site is still tender, but finally getting smaller. The ear and throat pain has finally subsided (but not completely gone away). So i think it was just a rough bout with that nerve down there - don't know if he twirled it around like spaghetti in there or what, but that nerve was apparently PISSED. i actually got much more explanation as to what was happening from my OS's partner (my normal OS was not in this last time i went).

So I'm getting better, yea! Thanks to all of you who gave me insight as to what to discuss with the OS, and thanks for all your prayers and well wishing! I needed some kinda support since i'm forever by myself.

Thank so much!

Kristin
