"sativex for pain"

Sativex is prescribed for MS (multiple sclerosis) patients in Canada. It is active extract of the cannabis plant and is taken sublingually by the spray, "Sativex is distinct from all other pharmaceutically produced cannabinoids currently available because it is derived from botanical material, rather than a solely synthetic process,

In February 2007, GW and Otsuka Pharmaceutical announced an exclusive agreement for Otsuka to develop and market Sativex in the United States. Sativex has received permission from the US regulatory authority, the FDA, to enter directly into late stage Phase III trials in the US. The first large scale US trial in the US for cancer patients is expected to start in summer 2007. The 300-patient, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study will evaluate the effect of Sativex in relieving average daily pain, reducing the use of breakthrough opioid medications, improving the quality of sleep and relevant aspects of quality of life among other outcome measures."

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sativex .

I wonder if anyone has tried this, perhaps "off label" to manage pain. From my research, it appears that cannabinoids can be effective in the reduction of pain.

US FDA appears to be finally doing their job as for as the approval of this.

"Sativex seems to be a very promising treatment option for patients whose pain does not respond to current analgesics," said Dr. Nathaniel Katz, Assistant Professor of Anesthesia, Tufts University School of Medicine. "The clinical data thus far suggest that many patients who have been suffering with intractable pain may gain significant benefit from the use of Sativex. I welcome GW expanding its research program into the US."

   Hey Edgaras,
Thanks for the update on this med; I know at least a few board members who've been tracking it's development and implementation with interest. Always nice to have another med option open up. I can tell you that there've been posters who respond well to cannibidiol - one who even mentioned it as the only pain relief they could get.

A good article from the Muscular Sclerosis Society of Canada..

Excerpt from article: "There is a wide variety of pain associated with MS from a range of causes: generalized pain, muscle spasms, trigeminal neuralgia (shooting pain in the face), painful sensations in the legs, feet and hands."

Bowho, It wouldn't be quite the same effect, because Sativex is nonintoxicating. But - yes - pain relief would be similar, most likely.

Nonsense, "nonintoxicating" Yeah, right. It has same components, and intoxication would, I guess, be dependent on the amount of dose.
Theoretically, it can be avoided, given that person titrates and finds a dose that it not too intoxicating and provides enough pain relief.

My apologies; I appear to have misremembered reading somewhere that Sativex was nonintoxicating. After reading their side effect profile (easy laughing, etc), it sounds pretty much like the standard "stoned" response to smoked marijuana.
Hmmmm. . .you know, I'd take easy laughing over much of my current meds' side effects any day. . .

as far as smoking goes, I think, from my "research", it would have the same effect, however, smoking produces carbon monoxide, damages lungs.. Less toxic, safer way to consume it would be frying the plant in the oil to make cannabinoids absorbable by the stomach.

lol..thanks bo...my list of things to do in Canada is getting long Yesterday, my neighbor asked me to bring back a moose for him (stuffed toy..not a real one..phew)!

My facial pain isn't bad enough likely to try this drug...but I can certainly ask my old family doctor what he knows about Sativex and whether it can be or has been prescribed for people with oral nerve injuries.

Stupid question: Is marijuana considered to be herbal?

Not sure what you mean by this, Charlotte. . . Do you mean, is it like other herbs you'd find in an herb garden? It Is a plant. . . Sounds like, from Bowho's research, it can be used to season foods. Or do you mean, is it an herbal supplement, like St. John's Wart. In which case, I don't think it's taken in pill form typically (Is any manufacturer processing it this way?)
It'd be a short acting pain med, I think, but I read that it works longer in the system when you have it in this fried butter formulation; the stomach takes a little longer to digest it.

Hi karen and bo...I just noticed this from edgaras' first post...I guess a better question would have been is marijuana considered to be 'botanic' or 'organic'? According to edgar's post, I guess it is.

I'm thinking that pharmaceutical companies might not like this alternative to pain treatment very much..a 'botanic' or 'herbal' pain medicine would cost much less to produce and package, right? Then, less cost to the consumer. I'm learning so much about the 'drug business' since January. Not sure I'm happy about that.

Sativex is produced from the actual marijuana plants (grown in undisclosed UK location). It is patented as it has a unique method of delivery (spray under tongue) and has unique extraction procedures which
leave out the plant material and collect active ingredients - numerous types of cannabinoids. So the company who is producing this have incentives and a able to make profits.
