"BURNING TONGUE AND THROAT!!"

I just found this site. I can't beleive it!I may have found others like myself....

About May/05 I started to get a little burning on my tongue. By June it was unbearable!Unfortunately it is still unbearable with no help except trial and error.

UNFORTUNATELY NO ONE CAN SEE ANYTHING BUT I CAN FEEL IT!!!

I have see my Family Dr. so often about this that he doesn't take me seriously any more.(He can't see anything) The Ear nose Throat Specialist says he can't see ant thing(must be stress).

Mine bothers me day and night. It is hard to get to sleep and when I wake up it is bad enough that I cannot go to sleep again.I am totally sleep deprived!

Aug./04 I tapered off Clorazepate and was put on Klonopin as I tapered and then tapered off the Klonopin.I was off both by May of this year.(Close to the time when the burning started). Coincidental??

I don't remember having problems after dental work however I have had a lot done lately. Sept./03 I had crowns done on the upper front and I had a lot of work done. Just before that root canals. But that is a long while before spring of 05.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to try.Meds or other? HELP! HELP!

BIYA
/

I have used every lozenge there is,xylocaine(topical viscous),oil of oregano, gum chewing, ice chips, water waster water,

Nothing seems to help

Biya, welcome to the forum and you've found the rite place. We all suffer from the same thing. If there is no diagnosis found or no irregularities in your system such as vitamin deficiencies, etc. then you have Burning Mouth Syndrome.

I have had BMS now since Feb '05. I did not get on medication until around March/April. I have found great relief from Klonopin and Elival. But most seen to find Klonopin or generic Clonozapam to be the best medication for keeping the burning down.

I have had alot of dental work as well and I do not contribute my BMS to dental work. I got BMS after becoming ill with a virus in my system and taking an antibiotic. 5 days after taking the antibiotic my tongue started burning. I will never forget those first few days of thinking what the hell I had. I had to go through many tests including an HIV test which was just horrible.

My best suggestion to you is search for "burning mouth syndrome" and print out as much literature as you can. Bring this literature with you to your doctor and show him. Make him do all the necessary tests that are listed there and if he still thinks its all "in your head", then find another doctor. Where do you live? There might be a specialist in your area.

Hi guys, Johnrelicman here, most likely the only man in America with BMS...this bad!

I do welcome you to the forum, but I'm sorry your here.
One thing you can count on, comming here, you will not feel alone.

Back in 1991, I was on I.V. antibiotics for a bone infection for
many months from an accident. I'm a General Contractor who fell off a roof and broke my arm, pelvis and hip. Even though it has been many years there's a good chance..and I don't rule it out, that the
antibiotics may have had something to do with this as well.
Not to mention much dental work and my first root canal a few
months prior to the onslaught.

I wish all you well,

johrelicman

John

John have you ever thought that it may have been the infection, and not the antibiotics?

   Hi
I developed a burning around the tip of my tongue in late May after a detox. Well I think that was what set if off. I have had several doctors all with different ideas. The burning is really annoying though better at night, my lips tingle a bit too and I have a dryness in my mouth I never had before. Lately I have found a site about Lipoic acid - it is used extensively in Germany for this and burning feet. I started taking some only 100mg a day and noticed increase in "better days". Then I stopped as I wasn't thinking it was this but started again and it does make it much easier. I have upped the dose now to 250-300mg daily and hope that will improve things further.
Hope this helps you as it is such an overpowering thing and one gets taken over by it and can't seem to ignore it. Good luck

Forgot to say when taking Lipoic acid it takes at least a month for the improvement to start so don't just take a few then think they won't work. They certainly do and maybe if you start at 250mg or more you will notice the effect sooner than I did with my 100mg.
Good luck to you all.

   Nardia99,
I was recently diagnosed with Burning Mouth Syndrome and the doctor recommended Alpha Lipoic Acid, 300 mg twice a day. I've only been taking them for a week and have seen no improvement yet, so its good to know that it took you about a month to see an improvement. Have you noticed any side effects from ALA? I know of a couple of people that had to stop taking it due to upset stomach. Also, in addition to the burning, do you have any taste alterations? I have a persistent salty taste in my mouth that won't go away, that they say is part of BMS. I'm wondering if the ALA helps with the taste problems too. Thanks for the info and hope you continue to do well!

Grace
