"Burning Tongue / Throat - Long post"

Well sorry to the few guys out there with this horrible condition, but I'm pretty sure that I will be joining the ranks of the few men out there. I'm a 41 year old married male with 2 children and have a somewhat stressful job. The biggest problem is I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)/ Depression with prevalence to health (I am scared to death of cancer). The GAD / Depression was diagnosed over 7 years ago when I had some health issues which turned out to be nothing major. The funny thing is that it the GAD manifested itself in my with itching all over my body. The psychiatrist said that depression can damage nerves and nerves take a long time to heal. After a year on an antidepressant, I leveled out and was fine up until this past December when the "C" word was mentioned by the doctor to my wife when she was having some problems. They turned out to be nothing serious but I went downhill. After we got the news that everything was OK with her, I thought I could get myself back on my feet but I started getting stomach and upper back pains. My doctor basically wasn't concerned, told me to take Motrin and prescribed Nexium for the stomach issue because she said I probably had acid reflux. She also wanted me to have an upper endoscopy. The back pain subsided on its own and I took the Nexium for 2 weeks during which time I felt like I had the flu. I started getting shooting bouts of pain around my right eye and right side of my head and this warm feeling in my throat and altered taste in my mouth. I stopped taking the Nexium and went back to the doctor. She sent me for blood work and referred me to an eye doctor for an exam. The pain subsided but the burning throat/altered taste did not. My blood work was essentially normal except for a Glucose serum elevation 3 points higher than normal and testing positive to past exposure for Epstein-Barr virus. The doctor wasn't worried about the blood sugar and told me that the EB virus was what was making me feel ill. Go figure. In the meantime, the throat/tongue burning has progressed to a point where my throat feels like fire and my tongue feels as if it was burnt by hot food. It is usually fine when I get up in the morning and worsens throughout the day and sometimes subsides before bedtime. I have good days and bad days. I went for the eye exam and the eye doctor cleared me and said I have healthy eyes. He suggested a visit to an ENT which I am going to this afternoon. My primary doctor also referred me to a GI doctor whom I saw last week. He scheduled me for an upper endoscopy next week and stated that I could very well have acid reflux which has irritated my throat. He also said that I may have not been able to tolerate the Nexium as it may have been too strong. He gave me quick dissolve Prevacid which I have been on for 4 days. My taste sensation has seemed to get better and I have not had the as much burning but I'm afraid it is only the placebo effect. I have tried everything: Biotene mouthwash / toothpaste, zinc pills/lozenges, gum, mints, Chloraseptic lozenges but they all only provide short-term relief.
I have not been officially diagnosed with BMS but my gut feeling is that is what will ultimately happen based on my symptoms and duration however, I have had NO dental work or procedures. So my theory is that BMS is bought about by some kind psychological factor which ultimately damages the nerves chemically. I have also read posts on other boards questioning if acid-blocking meds can cause BMS. Maybe it was bought on my a combination of these things but I know for sure that my psychological health definitely affects by physical health and I did have some sort of nerve pain prior to the BMS starting up. So I am going through medical rounds looking for answers but I guess it looks as if I won't find the "magic bullet". I can tell you that this felling in my mouth and throat is horrible and is depressing me. Any body have any doctors here in NJ who are good with BMS? I looked up the website for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ and there is a DMD named DR. Gary Heir who done a couple of presentations on Orafacial pain. I was contemplating giving him a call. Also, what is the consensus on the Klonopin treatment? Has anybody had any luck with alpha-lipoic acid (the evidence is very interesting in its relation to nerve pain). Lastly, Cymbalta may have some promise as it is an anti-depressant and has just been approved for use in treatment of GAD (I was on Paxil). It is also used for nerve pain. Any thoughts? Looking forward to replies.

Makman... I am sorry to hear of your health problems. I would be glad to comment on the Cymbalta. My story is posted under this conference and under one other... "problems after hysterectomy"... anyway, I have had BMS for over a year now. Two months ago, I was put on Cymbalta. I do believe it helped initially.. like so many things do. However, after time, the effectiveness tends to wear off. The burning changes intensity from day to day... but emotionally I am dealing with it better. And I assume that may be the result of Cymbalta. Either way, at least there is something positive. I believe from all that I have heard, read and experienced that when I'm anxious..... or stressed, things get worse for me. (and it may take a day or two to kick in). My massege therpist encouraged my to stay "out of my head"... which for me, meant not focusing intently on things. (like how do you do that??) I do believe there is a connection with the nerves of the brain.. and the intensity of this condition. I am sorry that all of our are living this nightmare.

   HI Makman,

I was suffering from the same symptoms too!!

My doctor thought at first that I am crazy, but eventually did few tests for me, including blood work, an MRI, CTSCAN, urine and stool cultures, and guess what? After reading the results, she looked at me and said: "You are so healthy according to all these tests!" But I was still suffering from the burning of my tongue, throat, and stomach. And because I have the acid reflux problem, she said that this is whats causing the burning of my tongue.
Well, let me tell you, I had noticed that I get this sensation when I eat certain foods, and on other days, I am prefectly normal!! So would you like me to tell you what sort of foods I am talking about?
Here we go, bread, pastas, pizzas. Well! They all contain wheat!!!
I eliminated all the wheat products from my diet, and with the help of the "Carafate" pills that my doctor gave me, I can say now, that I do not feel any burning whether of the tongue, throat, or stomach. But, I still do get it every once in a while if I eat something containing wheat without me knowing about it.
Wheat is found in almost everything on the market. I have to be so careful when I go grocery shopping to find the right things that do not contain wheat!! I altered my diet, and luckily I was able to find products that do not contain wheat.
I know it will take a while to heal my small intestines, but if I can live happily without this sensation of burning of the tongue, I will have to live without all the wheat products. So, I am guessing I am allergic to the gluetin.
I hope that I was of any help to anyone out there wondering if they ever going to find a solution for their burning tongues.

So,do you think that you might be having some sort of an allergy to something? Keep me posted if you figure out what is causing your problem. GOOD LUCK.

Mimi;-)

Mimi

   Hi ,

I have just been diaganosed wih BMS afer a year of going thru many types of dr. and denists who had no clue what was going on.........i found the exact symptoms i was suffering thru on the inernet and was met with scepticism from all the dental/oral/internists/ent and neurologists that i had seen and they offerd me no hope for my pain and suffering....with no relife in sight ...I finally found my way to Dr Gary Heir yesterday morning and have found the Mesiah!! He told me what my symptoms and what the actual physiological causes of my condidtion are (there are many of us in the population).....though the actual triggers are still bepng researched. (they have a research /study group of 50 BNS patience on the grounds in Newark campus!,)
He has just put me on Klonopin and I have started this moring , this, according to Dr. Heir shows the most promise for managing and keeping the pain down to 50% of what it is.....I am very positive about going thru this treatment and am keeping daily diaries of the pain during the day. I have already had my first cup of coffee and am feeling no burning after taking 1/4 of the pill this morning.

He is a wonderful/intellegent man and teacher and i couldn't reccomend him more highly.....

this is a very specialized field and he is one of the few world reknowned oral facial pain specialists in the country.

Good luck ......there is hope!

robyn

In your post mentioning Dr. Heir. What physiological conditions did he mention? I would love to know. Klonopin, is this an antidepressant? I am on Amitripline.
I believe we are all searching for answers so any help anyway can give is worth a try. As you have probably read from my previous post I have had this now for 3 years, and is it better but not over.

Makman- my heart goes out to you. I know we all can feel your pain both mental and physical
