"burning mouth syndrome"

I have been undergoing a number of dental procedures.I developed BMS
during that time. I am still undergoing treatments including the removal of a failed bridge and an implant front tooth.I am currently on Dexamethasone rinse 4x a day. After nearly 3 weeks I find no relief.Sometimes I think I'm going to loose it.I have arthritis also
but the pain of BMS pales the pain of arthritis.I will be going back for a followup next week. I am going to a prestigous school Tufts dental in Boston. Can anyone supply me with a solution they have found? I know how badly you are feeling.

I went to a dental surgeon who made the diagnose. He gave me clonaspan. You swish it around a few minutes and then spit. the conditon comes and goes.

This is the first time I have ever posted on a discussion board but I have been reading this site for some time now. I wish I would have discovered it sooner because I might have done some things differently. I am certain that my problem is a result of a dental injection that went bad. I didn't realize at the time that these injections weren't safe and the dentist didn't tell me. He had me see an allergist. The burning tongue came and went a bit at first but then became permanent. I couldn't stand to have my tongue touch my teeth. I saw another dentist who said he could fix the problem by redoing the crown (damage happened when this crown was being done) plus the tooth behind it needed to be filed down and a crown put on it. I wish I had never went to this dentist. When he injected me the first time, I jumped in the chair. He keep poking me and everytime I jumped in the chair. I have never experienced so much pain. Wouldn't you think he would ask me if I'm ok before jabbing me again and again? He put temp crowns on. That experience produced incrediable jaw pain that was intolerable. That was 6 mos. ago and my jaw pain has now diminished some but still is there. I won't go back. I am now terrified to have dental work done but I have do do something about these temp crowns.
I've been to neurologists, tried several meds, gave up on all of them. The best thing I have found to help is sugarless gum.
Why? I don't know, but if I have something in my mouth, the pain is tolerable. Some days are better than others.

I take 50 mg of Amitriptyline at bed time every night. Thats it besides staying clear of certain foods and products. Also exercise and try not to become too stressed. I know how hard that can be but everyday just get up and say this day will be better.

The below paragraph I copied form the Merck Manual, it all holds true for me.
I knew I was allergic to Propylene Glycol long before I had BMS.
Watch your toothpaste because alot of them have the above ingredient in it.

Merck Manual -
A common cause is the use of antibiotics, which alters the balance of bacteria in the mouth, leading to an overgrowth of the fungus Candida (a condition called thrush). Ill-fitting dentures and allergies to dental materials may be causes as well. Overuse of mouth rinses and sprays may lead to burning tongue syndrome, as can anything that leads to a dry mouth, such as alcohol or tobacco use, and many medications. Sensitivities to certain foods and food additives, particularly sorbic acid and benzoic acid (which are food preservatives), propylene glycol (found as a moisturizing agent in foods, drugs, and cosmetics), chicle (found in some chewing gums), and cinnamon, may play some role. Deficiencies of vitamins, including B12, folic acid, and B-complex, can cause burning mouth syndrome. Iron deficiency has also been implicated.

5 months ago i went to the dentist he said i needed a crown he injected me and said he would return in 5 mins when he returned and started drilling the pain was terrible he injected me again 5min later started to drill still the pain was unbearable by this time the dentist seemed to lose patients he got his needle and stuck it in the roof of my mouth the roof of my mouth swelled instantly like a golf ball 5 mins later my whole head was numb and i didnt feel a thing while he was drilling. he fitted a tempory crown while a permernant 1 was made. that evening half of the crown broke away.2 weeks later a round circular sore with raised white taste buds appeared in the middle of my tongue which later changed form into a crack. the roof of my mouth where he injected me is sore and a yellow coating is on the back of my tongue my tongue feels like its burning the only time it doesnt bother me is when im eating or sleeping does this sound like bms to you

Yes, some of the symptoms sounds like BMS. The yellow covering on the tongure could possibly be Candidas of the mouth. Especially if you have been on alot of antiboitics. I had this to in the begining, stay away from all sugar and any products that have yeast. Then your doctor should be able to give you something to help this.
The article I keep refering to in the Merck Manual on line about BMS, also covers Disorders of the tongue with pictures. Google this and you will find a number of problems that can ocurr on the tongue. The Merck manual even have some pictures.

I know it is the most painful(my neurogolist told me this burning sensation is a form of pain)that I have ever experienced, I thought I was nutty until I actually found a doctor that could tell me my symptons before I could tell them to her. That was a wonderful feeling. I had one to many doctors to look at me as if it was all in my head. But its not it is real, so hang in there, you can handle it. You are really stronger thant what you think you are.
All of us have our moments, just say some prayers and try not to think of it.
God bless.

I have suffered for seven years with BMS.The only way to relieve the pain is to chew chewing gum.

Good luck
