BMS more prevalent in women?..why?

All of the information I can gather over the years, something keeps coming back to haunt me. Reading many posts, I have been seeing the word atibiotic play into the equation more and more. let's say we
have been damaged by atibiotics, but how do women MORE SO and BMS play
into it?..do women in their 40's and 50's take more atibiotics
than men?..if it was true, there may be something other than the menopause scenario. Do women have more Root Canals than men in
their 40's and 50's?. how about drink more coffee or have more blood
loss? anyway, I'm starting to believe women do something more
than men in their 40's and 50's to cause BMS. Maybe we Should not blame this one on nature just yet.

Give this some thought.

John

If BMS is more common in women, what happened to you John ?
I think by nature women take better care of their health than men.. I can count on one hand how many times ive been on atibiotics in my entire life.. I have never had a root canal.. Of course women bleed more than men by nature.. any man would think hes dying if he had to put up with that for 1 minute..PMS is from putting up with mens shitt I have a damaged lingual nerve from wisdom tooth extraction that caused my burning tongue. I suppose im lucky that its not 24/7 anymore.. i do have 24/7 numbness of the tongue and slight clamp like feeling on the jaw.

Hi bowho:

From what you describe, I'm not even sure you have a classic case of BMS.

What happened to me?.it would figure based on my luck. Very small percentage of men get BMS. I'd had a better chance of getting BMS than winning my state Lotto. Needless to say, it certainly is more common in women, and don't take my word for it just do some research.

Tooth extraction?.. I have had that too, around the time of the onslaught. Everyone has had wisdom teeth extracted, so here we are back to square one??.let us all keep trying to work this one out.
Conversation is good here.

I would like to add. In the months prior to the onslaught,
I did have the following dental work done: Extracted molar and wisdom
tooth. Root canal and gold cap put on. The majority of my wisdom
teeth were pulled years ago.

I know that BMS usually starts from an unknown reason and i argued that issue with my doctor that it was not classic BMS because i knew that mine started within hours after a bad day at the dentist ..
It didnt just start out of the blue one fine day ...
Since he couldnt diagnose the lingual nerve damage he had to tell me something after 8 months of why my numb tongue was burning with electrical zapping shocks .. My gum is numb too but doesnt burn..
He had to have some cockamamie story to send me to see a neurologist i suppose.. neurologist agreed i have some kind of abnormal nerve stimulation going on that causes the those symptoms..I was put on neurontin for the next 3 years to control that madness..
Its possible yours started from the dental work and you had a delayed reaction ? Abnormal nerve stimulation works in mysterious ways ..
I never new it affected women more than men ..

Yes unfortunately it dose affect women more so, but what dose that really tell us?.. I'm sure there can be a delayed reaction from
dental work to the onslaught. That would make some sense to me
because I can't honestly say it started right after any dental
procedures, but seemed to come on slowly after. Something to keep in mind.

To through a wrench into it all, I did want to mention I have
some allergies. One of them being, I'm allergic to wheat.

My doctor at Emory in Atlanta, Ga. told me for every 10 patients she has with BMS only 2 of those will be males. I think some of the women that have this is due to hormones(menopause in particular).

AJ, some day I may have to travel many states to find a Doc. willing to help me. Going to the family Doc. for this is like going to a Witch Dr. for a heart transplant. They just don't know what BMS
is or really care how to treat it. When you are only one percent
of the population, good luck to everyone since it is not life
threatning. But one day I'll just go stir crazy that's all.

The doctor I found: After going from one doctor to another doctor and finally taking everything in my own hands I made an appointment to see a doctor at Emory in Atlanta(3 hours away) that speciallized in cancers of the throat(which of coarse I do not have). After he seen me he said he had a doctor that comes in and helps out and if I could stay a couple of hours she would be in and he would see if she could take a look at me. She is an Oral Pathologist. It was wonderful to have someone who could tell me my symptons before I had a chance to mention them to her. I cried. Does not make it any better but was nice to know someone knew this was not in my head. What is real frustating now is, (I see her once a year), I have proof of Diagnosis but when I talk to my doctors here they have never heard of it and then what really makes me mad is they never go and learn anything about it but instead depend on me to tell them.
No interest in their patients.

On the question you ask about having constant total tongue burning.

I have some days that are wonderful, it is still there but not as severe,I could live this way and then I may have two days of it being really bad. Mine is more on the left side of my mouth and tongue but will move to the center of the tongue from time to time, when this happens I will talk with a Lisp and also the outside of my lips will burn. Like John mentioned there are some foods that really set it off, you learn them as it goes along. I still cry about it(my pity party)but you learn to live with it. There are some days you think it is never going to end. Actually it never leaves completely but I still have hope and it could be worse, so we will keep counting our blessings.

One other thing, my dentist made me a bite guard and this seems to really help at night.

An oral medicine specialist is probably the best person to consult. This is a specialty of dentistry that deals specifically with medical aspects of the mouth to include TMD, atypical facial pain and BMS. A referral is through your dentist or MD. They would be in the yellow pages under dental specialists.
