"I'm having Micro Nerve Surgery next week. (9-"

   Hello all,
I remember about three months ago when I had my lower left wisdom tooth removed and a few days later the numbness on the left side of my tongue was still there and it has never gone away. It was also accompanied by a metalic taste and some pain as well, especially at the end of the day. I was a wreck. I got so depressed, couldn't function at work, etc... Since then I've learned to deal with it but I still have that numbness, lost taste, and slur my words a little bit, although my friends and family tell me that I don't. I recently went to a doctor from Loyola University in Chicago (Dr. Steinberg) that specializes in things such as lingual nerve damage and he did an evaluation on me (A series of poking / hot, cold tests and taste tests while being blind folded). I failed all of them and he told me that I haven't gotten any better since day one and that my lingual nerve is probably severed. He said that he has been about 99% correct on his diagnosis of severed nerves..... being that there is no way to tell if it is severed w/out exploring it in surgery.

When I push against my gums by the nerve I can still feel a really sharp pinching on the end of my tongue which tells me that somehow the nerve is transmitting feeling to my brain (point being... my nerve isn't severed)

I went ahead and scheduled a surgery because he said the quicker he takes care of it, the better chance the surgery will be successful.

My question is....
1. Do I go on with the surgery or do I give it more time to heal? I'm kind of afraid that my nerve really isn't severed although he says that it probably is and that he is going to perform the surgery and make it even worse than it already is.

Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, just a little FYI: I read many other stories on this board and I keep everyone in my thoughts and prayers.

   Hi Geremy,

First of all, I'm so sorry for your injury and suffering. I am in the same boat as you. My lingual nerve was severed on 4/2/03 during wisdom tooth extraction (lower left) by a qualified, reputable oral surgeon. I am scheduled to have lingual nerve repair surgery by a surgeon in Boston on 9/26/03. I waited about 2 months (during which time the original OS that did the damage said it would improve on its own) before I decided to see a specialist (my OS did not refer me; I went on my own). At my first visit to the specialist (2 months post-injury) I displayed only deep anesthesia (i.e. numbness) and no other symptoms. The specialist told me to return in another month, which I did. At that time, he re-examined me and I displayed a symptom very similar to the one you describe now--i.e. pain along the damaged side of the tongue when pressure is applied to the injury site. My specialist described this as "Tinel's sign" and it is almost always indicative of a neuroma. My understanding of a neuroma is that it is a kind of scar tissue that forms when a severed nerve tries to grow back together and does so improperly. I am not an expert by any means, so please ask your own doctor to explain your symptoms in your particular case! My specialist explained that during the surgery, he would attempt to remove the scar tissue and sew the 2 clean ends of the nerve back together, thus giving the nerve a chance to connect more effectively. He explained to me that there are no guarantees with this surgery. It may or may not restore some feeling and it may or may not relieve some pain. It probably will not restore the sense of taste lost on the injured side. I am going ahead with it because it is my only chance (albeit a slim one) to feel better and regain some function.

I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide to do. If you want more information, or if you'd like to talk about the procedure more, just email me (I am a registered user; I think you would have to register to use the email function).

   Jean G.,
I wish you luck on your surgery. I hope it helps and your tongue feels normal again. I would love to know the name of your lingual nerve specialist. I have had pain in my tongue for over 7 years following periodontal surgery. I did not have numbness prior to this time. I have been to several "experts", but have not received a definitive diagnosis. I am on the verge of having a motor cortex stimulator inserted above my brain, but do not want to if there is another alternative. Would appreciate your sharing your expert's name with me, so that I can talk to him to see if he has any advice. Thanks and I will be anxious to hear your outcome.

   Hi Loraine,

I am so sorry to hear of your injury. 7 years is way too long to be in that kind of pain. I can tell you the name of my surgeon if you would like to email me privately (I'm a registered user so you can send me email if you register as well). My surgeon is rather adamant that he will not perform corrective surgery beyond 6 months post-injury, as it is not effective. I'm not sure why--I think it is because by then the nerve is not capable of reestablishing a healthy connection. I am at the very edge of the envelope for the surgery because my injury date was 4/2/03 and my surgery date is 9/26/03.

I hope you find a therapy that works for you and relieves some of your pain.

Jean G.

   Hello Jean G.,
For some reason, I am having trouble registering on this site. I have sent a note to Ross. My e-mail is LoraineSummer@aol.com. Would you please share the name of your surgeon, as well as his/her location? Even though nerve surgery might not be an option, a diagnosis would be helpful at this point so I can make an intelligent decision about what to do next. Thanks much.
Loraine
