"Tongue numbness after one month.....thank God"

   Hi everyone:

I must start my saying that I am sooo happy and relieved to have found this site as at least I dont feel so alone and "crazy"!! I have nerve damage after getting several novacaine injections for a deep gum cleaning three weeks ago! The numb feeling wore off everywhere except for the left side of my tongue and lips...when I woke up the next morning and still had the numb/burning/weird feeling left, I freaked out and immediately called my dentists office. Everyone there (I have a close friend that is a hygenist there) swore and continues to swear that this is NOT permanent and will get better!

I work in a customer service environment and basically "talk" for a living all day every day on the phone with customers! By the end of the day...I am exhausted, and burning/itching with major discomfort! I have missed several days of work from this already and nobody seems to understand how uncomfortable this is every day. My husband just keeps telling me that there isnt anything I can do so I should just get "used to it" and nobody else at work understands! I think people honestly think I am crazy and don't know what I am talking about....I guess a "numb tongue" does sound a bit nuts huh???

Food tastes like nothing, I feel like I am lisping, and by the end of each day, I just cry!!! I do feel some "pain" and itching, tingling over the last few days and am hoping that this is a sign of recovery! Reading all these stories has helped me and I know it could be so much worse! I am certainly hoping everyone here gets relief and healing...and of course that my situation gets better. I am not sure if it is getting better or not at this point. In the mornings, I seem to feel better....but as the day goes on...its miserable again!

I go back at the end of the month for a re-check at the dentist and will go from there on what to do next. Every morning I wake up and hope it will be gone!!! Maybe tomorrow will be the day!

Thanks for listening and I am so sorry to sound so desperate!
Beth

   Beth,

Sorry you have to deal with this injury. The odds of you recovering are good. It may take weeks to months and it isn't alway going to be easy, but you should recover. Nerves heal at their own pace and usually very slowly. Nerve injury pain usually does gets worse as the day goes on.

The symptoms you are feeling are good signs of nerve healing. Nerve healing can be very uncomfortable and painful. It is normal to be upset and even depressed about this injury. I found going to my family doctor helpful because she helped me deal with my injury and gave me medications for the pain and to help me sleep.

As you wait for the time to pass there are things you can do to help you feel better. It is important to rest as much as you can so your body can heal. I take suppliments such as Methyl B-12, alpha lipoic acid, a multi and B-complex helpful. There is research that shows Methyl B12 and alpha lipoic acid helpful in nerve healing. I feel it can't hurt, but might help. There is some belief that a dose of steroids (medrol pack?) may help if given early on in the injury.

Hang in there and give it time. TIME the four letter word.

PS... desperate...don't apologize about being desperate... I think most of us on this site have felt that way too. I know I have.

Thank you for all that have posted here, I am beginning the same journey myself. Yesterday had a root canal and felt the novocaine injection zap to the end of my tongue and it was one of those "oh no, never felt that before" feelings. Today, right side of the tongue and inside of gum numb, but thank god no pain at this point. I have read a few sights that mention steroid treatment.....does anyone know how soon this should be explored? I don't know if I should wait a week (as my dentist says it will surely go away by then but I am not optomistic based on what I have read) or see a specialist immediately?

   Jim-
Hello ,sorry to see you find yourself here. I do think you will heal 100%. As for the steroids, Yes I would start them now. Prednisone (sp?) is very helpful in helping the nerve to heal faster. See if they will give you a RX for it now, take the dosages and then return to him in a week or two. Also try taking the B-12, it is also know to be good at promoting nerve health. And by all means stay optimistic, I always have said that the body tends to follow the mind in healing, so believe that you WILL be ALL BETTER SOON!
Good luck on your recovery and keep us posted, when you do heal, please post in the recovery section, there just isn't enough of those posted so that others can have hope too.

   Hi Beth,

My name is Chris, and I just want to tell you that I can relate so much to your situation. It has really been comforting to me to read these postings. My husband tells me not to talk about it. He says that maybe if I don't talk about it, I won't think about it. I have had friends tell me, "well at least it's just your tongue". I also wake up every morning and wonder if today is the day it will go away. It seems a little better when I first wake up, but then it is not long after that I feel it is just like yesterday. Anyway, I feel hopeful since I found this site. Others have healed from this, and it would seem the odds are in our favor of healing.

Chris

Thank uou for sharing your story. I don't feel alone anymore. It's amazing how i feel exactly the same way. Struggle to talk, sounds like lisp. I often bite my tongue while eating and have a metallic taste in my mouth. Two weeks and counting from my extraction and I hope this goes away. I can't imagine being like this for the rest of my life. It doen't hurt but it's definetly annoying. Even when people don't notice, I feel self conscious. When I bite my tongue, I get a throat ache like a sore throat and have trouble swallowing. Are you progressing? How long has it been now?

Thanks guys for all your responses:

To respond to the replies: My numbness has been for apprx. one month now! Its so bizarre, its hard to put into words how it feels. Every morning it seems a bit better but by days end, I realize that it is just as numb as the day before too! I do think that I am making some progress, but at times I think I am just getting more and more used the discomfort!

I have just recently gotten the horrible metallic taste too...I didnt have it before!

Reading others stories and realizing I am not alone in this, has been extrememly helpful. I do think it will get better and my attitude has improved so much!

My favorite saying has always been "this too shall pass"...Im praying for all of us that this time I am right!!!

Thanks,
Beth

I to at 37 years just started having this strange numbness type feeling about a week ago in my mouth, after eatting a sandwhich with jalapenos, I thought that was the cause, actually i'm still not sure, its just strange that only half my mouth is numb, only on one side of my face, jaw, lip and tounge are numb, I have been doing research and am looking into Hypocalcemia, which is low levals of calcium in the blood and the treatment is a simple calcium suppliment or taking some vitamin D, but there is so much out there on a numb or tingling sensation in the mouth, that MS started to scare the *!@$ out of me and even lyme disease, cause they are all silent killers, actually many diseases are silent killers in that they have vauge or no symptoms. They gradually consume you without causing any serious symptoms in the early stages. I only just realized that I'm going to have to have a checkup and even now regular checkups for early diagnosis of a vague symptom like a numb or tinglng sensation of the tounge, diagnosed early can save your life.....goodluck beth

   Hi All:

Just an update...been having a rough time lately with the numbness again. It did seem to be better (and is definately better than the first month), but now is at a stand still once again. I definately can go for almost a whole day without thinking about it some days now...but, than I seem to go downhill for several days following! It is going on three months now and my dentist has recommended me to an oral surgeon now for possible surgery! I have basically told him that I will wait a few more months. If I knew for sure it would NEVER go away, I would opt for the surgery in a heartbeat! I would hate to go through that if I am healing on my own slowly anyway! Any opinions out there concerning surgery would be appreciated! I have heard there is no guarantee even with the surgery so yes I am skeptical!

Food is still a challenge (although I cant say I am NOT eating because of it..lol), and tastes very strange most of the time. If I chew on the other side...its better!

I still have hope, and do see an improvement...this site has helped me some every day! Thanks to all of you for sharing you success...it continues to give me hope!

Congrats to T for making a big step with her meds! Im praying for you hon!

Sam: It sounds like you have something else going on and should continue to do research on your situation...If you did NOT get any novacaine or dental work done prior to your numbness, you have every reason to be worried. I am sure that my discomfort is from a shot that I remember (too well) exactly when it was given to me...good luck on your quest, its scary enough KNOWING how we got to feel this pain/discomfort....I cant imagine not knowing the reason for it!

Take care everyone,
Beth

I am so thankful for finding this website. I am 38 years old. Monday I noticed my tongue was tingling and numb, what worries me is I have not been had any dental work done. Today is my third day, I know my husband, family, and co-workers think I'm crazy. I'm really getting scared. I called my doctor Tuesday and he had me come in and do some blood work checking my blood sugar, and my B-12 levels, and he scheduled a MRI for next Monday (May 23), to check for MS and told me not to worry!! Now, all I can is cry. Please if anyone can help me, please respond or email me: Shesforhim@aol.com Thanks

Have you looked at burning mouth syndrome; BMS? There is a heading in this site for that specifically and it seems it starts out of nowhere sometimes. I hope you find relief soon.

   Hey everyone:

Just having a bad week with my mouth and needed to vent to someone that understands...!! On the positive side, my tongue has definately improved....over time! But...I still have bad days/weeks and sometimes doubt that I will ever be normal again. For the past few nights I have had this constant feeling of something (a hair??) being stuck on my tongue right in the numb/irritated area...I know this sounds crazy...but that is the only way I can explain the feeling. Of course, there is nothing there...its just an annoying feeling. Some days I can honestly say that I don't notice the feeling anymore as a whole...but some days/weeks...it almost seems worse. I have gotten used to this feeling of tightness, bad metallic taste and itching but still get very discouraged at times!!

I know that I am luckier than a lot of people on this board and feel bad for complaining...I just needed to vent to people that understand...my husband is soo tired of hearing it and I dont even think he believes me sometimes!

Oh well...I am hoping it will continue to get better!
Thanks for listening everyone, and I am wishing you all a speedy recovery!
Beth

   Beth,

This is the place to share how you are doing. I don't take it as complaining. We all need a place to vent our concerns and frustrations as we learn to deal with our injuries.

I'm glad you are seeing improvement. I remember reading anothers posting about the feeling of a hair stuck on the tongue. I never had that feeling, but I can imagine how annoying that could be. I get (not as much anymore) a strange sensation on my cheek where it feels like part of my face is not attached. It feel like it is moving or floating off my face. It is hard to explain this feeling too.

I don't think people understand all the strange sensations we try to explain because they are just soooooo strange. I can't understand them myself and I feel them. It is all so messed up. It is good to know we have each other to share and understand each other.

I was told I probably wouldn't get better because I didn't heal fast enough, but I have improved so much that I have gotten off my meds. It does get better. It took my over two years to get here, but every month there was improvement. Hang in there and you too will see improvements.

Try to remember that all these whacked out sensations are good signs your nerve is trying to heal. Thinking this way helped me cope with my injury. I found that people want to understand, but after awhile they tire of hearing of it. I started to journal alot of my feelings and that helped me cope. It has been one of the most difficult things I've dealt with in my life, but I've survivied it.

Hang in there and keep sharing your frustrations and concerns. By you sharing your story it helps me deal with my injury.

Ditto. Hearing you guys say just what is in my mind is very reassuring. It is so hard to describe this pain, that is why I feel so lonely, as frinds and family just cannot emapathise at all. I find strangers I have just met often are more sympathetic - mostly on this site of course but also people I met in the gym, or my new therapist. I guess its cos there is nothing to see, we look the same as when we were happy go lucky people, which is how our family knew us before so they dont really comprehend the change. And we dont even have a proper diagnosis, scan or anything to show we are injured.
Thankyou so much T, you always have words of comfort. You have a way of making it all seem more bearable, by welcoming these strange feelings as positive healing.
Take care all, praying for healing to us all

Same thing here. Had root canal on lower right molar five days ago, and right side of tongue is numb, metallic taste and slight tingling. My dentist said that it should pass in time, but it could last several months. Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-06-06 AT 10:25 PM (CST)

I had TWO root canals nine days ago. One was on my lower left side and the other on the upper right. I've never, ever experienced such PAINFUL shots in my gums like I did before and during those procedures. Also, I eventually lost track of how many total shots of Novacaine I recieved. Anyhoo, the numbness wore off relatively fast on my right side, but the left side stayed numb much longer and now the left side of my tongue feels "sorta" numb-ish. It feels more like I scalded it on something, but I know I didn't. It's truly hard to describe because if I tell my friends that my tongue feels numb, they tell me that it must be my imagination since I can still talk, eat, and taste food just fine. But it's making me insane! I almost constantly have the urge to....and this sounds corny, but to just let my tongue hang in a glass of ice water! Does anyone know what I might be experiencing??? Up until a few days ago, I still felt the tingling sensation that I would normally feel when novacaine is wearing off after getting a simple filling. But.....now my tongue just plain hurts!

   Hi Everyone:

It has now been 6 loooong months for me! I am sooo thrilled to report that my recovery is now at around 99%!! I just basically woke up one morning with the numbness mostly gone!! I feel so much better. I still have a metallic taste and a spot on my tongue that feels different but it is a great feeling to be basically back to normal now!

I am hoping you all take comfort in the fact that I did indeed heal when I honestly thought I was going to live my life miserable with this! It consumes your life and makes you miserable every moment, but slowly does get better! Believe me...If I can get better so can you all!

God bless and take care,
Beth

   Elizabeth,

Sorry to hear of your lingual nerve damage. I have the same thing... caused by an injection of articaine for a root canal. I'm now 14 months into the nightmare... and it is somewhat better, I'd say about 30 - 40%, somedays better than others. The first seven months were hell... didn't know if I'd live or die, but the symptoms began to soften after the 7 month mark. Be sure to take Vit.B complex and B12, lecithin and fish oil to give you the nutrients needed for nerve repair. If you're lucky, you'll resolve within three months, but many do not. Some cases are permanent, some get better slowly (like mine so far). Try acupuncture but make sure the points used are in and under your tongue, not just on the arms, legs, hands, face, or ears. I'm about to purchase a specialized electromagnetic frequency device that is said to help heal damaged nerves. I'll let all know how it works out. The cost isn't prohibitive... about $770. Be strong, we all know what you are going through, and it is hell to put it mildly.

Bob

Wow! I didn't know this happened so much. I had the root canal 10 days ago, and with the novacaine, I felt a Zap of electricity in my tongue. My tongue is still numb on that side - sort of - in explaining it to people, it feels more like I burned it on hot food maybe. It is odd. The last few days, though, I am getting little shooting pains in it. I def. to eat on the other side, and cold drinks feel best. Hot foods are not appealing at all. Think the pains mean I am returning to normal?

Yes the pain can mean you are healing. That is what I believe. I hope you get better, but stay positive & healthy, so you will have the best chance of healing as fast as you can.
God bless you, healing prayers for us all in pain.
ps, i didnt know it happened at all until after my experience. The warnings didnt equate to this much life alteration. But I guess its a test in my life.

I too have numbness to left side of tongue and some of the jaw. Sometimes tingles - This is the second full day now. I'm not sure if I should listen to dentist - says it should take care of itself in a few weeks or even months..... I will probably call a neurologist and check on this just to be on the safe side.

It has been a little over 3 weeks for me. The right side of my tongue feels like it's burnt. The dentist originally said it should be better in 2 weeks. He said the fact that it's burning is a good sign. Does anyone know if this is true? I've been taking B-12. Today I started taking hypericum. The gentleman at Whole Foods said I should stop caffiene. I seem to get a little relief when I lay down. I try and have aposutive attitude, but it is torture. On top of everything, I'm currently unemployed. When it rains it pours.
