"lip burning"

After ten months of being told that I am "getting better", I finally got referred to a gamma knife treatment center. The doctor told me that I am not a particularly good candidate for gamma knife treatment because it is not idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, but rather neuralgia from trauma to the nerve. Has anyone undergone gamma knife treatment for the lip burning. I am completely at my wit's end. Desperate for help; have also been referred to Dr. Zuniga in Dallas for possible decompression surgery. sounds very very scary. Thanks.

Does your lips ever look or feel chapped as well as burning. Recently injured here with lingual and inferior aveolar nerve injuries, but my lips feel chapped and often red too as well as constantley burning and tingling

Within the last couple of days, I have even noticed that there are cracks beginning to appear in my lower lip. I go through about two chap sticks a week. I do not go anywhere without it b/c of the dryness and chafing of my lips. I am sorry that you are experiencing this also, but you are the only person that has acknowledged this issue. I talk all day (I am an audiologist), and I can tell you that sometimes I have to excuse myself during an extensive case history and lube-up my lips. It is awful. This whole experience has been a nightmare. I tried acupuncture two weeks ago and thought I was going to jump out of my skin some of the needles were so painful going in. No one tells you that who recommends that. Anyway, then Hurricane Gustav got in my way ( I live in Louisiana) and so we are just getting our power back on. Hang in there. I'll let you know if the acupuncture helps (theoretically it should also restore moisture to the area).

Yes, sorry for the delay in the message. Saw Zuniga in Dallas. He was very nice, spent a lot of time with me. He told me, in general, that I was not a great candidate for the surgery because he thought that my burning lip was classic central nervous system, not peripheral nervous system. He recommended that I try everything and anything else before agreeing to the nerve graft- including acupuncture, meds, botox, bio-feedback, prayer and an electrical implant to block the pain that can be placed in the neck. Nice choices huh?? I started the Lyrica, but like all the other drugs, it makes me goofy and I work for a living, as an audiologist. Anyway, as head of the Southwest Medical Center's Oral Surgery department, I do believe that he knows what he is doing. If I do have it done, I will go back there. Let me know. KJB

I went through serious confusion about peripheral versus central. I was told for years that my lingual nerve injury from an injection had progressed to central nervous system and I went through the spinal cord stimulator implant which did not work and was very umpleasant. This same doctor that did the implant did a simple lingual nerve block and it completely numbed the pain for a few hours. The doctors I have seen since say that if I had complete pain relief from the local lingual block, my injury has to still be local (in the nerve itself) and not related to my central nervous system. Have you had a local block to your injured nerve?

Yes, and I had two wonderful hours of no burning; the oral surgeon who did the block is convinced that I have a peripheral nerve injury of some sort and wants to do an exploratory of the nerve. I am probably going to let him do it in a couple of weeks. He is definitely of the opinion that a bone fragment or a neuroma or something is on the nerve.

   Kathleenjohs,

I am an acupuncturist as well as a person with an injured lingual nerve. The acupuncture should NOT be very painful... the points used should be both in and under the tongue as well as on the arms, hands, face, ears, etc. I'm about to start using an electromagnetic device said to heal nerves and other tissues... I'll let the board know how that works out. Acupuncture did help me alot... took the edge off the burning pain and if it comes back just get another treatment. Relief isn't instantaneous though... can take a couple of days AFTER the treatment to feel relief.

Good luck.

Bob

Good to know that it is not supposed to hurt. My adjunct sites in the fleshy part of my hand are not black and blue and were swollen for two days. I am so tired of hurting that I cancelled my appointment this past Friday. I don't know what to do. It has not helped yet ( I have had four treatments; however, they were interrupted by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike and therefore, two were in one week, then a week off, then two in another week. They hurt like hell, particularly when he hits the trigeminal nerve on the side of my face by the ear. I may try and find another acupuncturist that uses smaller needles. thanks for the info. Punctured in Louisiana. KJB

   kathleenjohn,

Make sure you see a LICENSED acupuncturist. If possible try to find one that uses Japanese needles... they are usually thinner and slightly less painful than Chinese ones. Different practitioners have different techniques, so it may be best to try someone else. Good luck.

Bob

Thanks for the info. This doctor (M.D., no less) is licensed, but Chinese. He is very old, but is one of the few doctors that were recommended by folks who wanted to try acupuncture. I found the needles large that were used in my wrists and hands for adjunct sites. Perhaps I am super sensitive to pain, but I would do anything if something worked. I did not feel any relief from the burning in my lip. Maybe I will try another licensed acupuncturist. Thanks again. Kathleen

It's funny you mention dry lips..I too suffer from that constant feelling of chafing and I am always putting chapstick or vaseline on my lower lip and chewing into it because it feels so irritating. when I mentioned this to the surgeon he thought I was crazy...funny, isn't it, how flipant the professionals can become once the damage is done.

sorry i haven't gotten back to you earlier. Not only is my lip burning from the midline to the end of it, but I dread every single solitary meal because the pain gets worse when I talk and particularly bad when I eat. Nice life, huh???
