"Neurectomy anyone?"

I've seen one or two people mention neurectomy. Would you be kind to elaborate on this. I assume they would first do a peripheral nerve block to see if the pain goes away before performing this procedure?

They do do a nerve block first. I've had two done and could still feel the worst pain on my lip. I want to have one done without being medicated to see the real story but I can't even miss one dose of drugs w/o going into a tail spin. No doctor will touch me for a neurectomy or any other numbing procedure because I do feel the pain after being numbed.

Another lady on this site, with IAN damage, recently had the cryo surgery where they froze the nerve. It isn't permanent...I think she said it could last up to a year. That might be a better way to go to start with. The surgery did help her. She said recovery was worse than she expected.

It would give you the opportunity to decide if you wanted to be numb for the rest of your life before doing a neurectomy.

Pim, who was the lady who had the Cryo?

I was listed to have it but decided against it. I'm one year on Wednesday - what a nightmare.....

   dom

I am having the same type of neurectomy that "mike the medic" had in August with the same doctor, Dr. Donoff out of Mass Gen and the Harvard Oral and Max. Surgeons. You can google, success + donoff + neurectomy and you will pull up Ian's story, (Mike the Medic is Ian)...

I met with Dr. Donoff last week in Boston. I live in TN and am also the person that had the cryo in Atlanta out of Emory Oral and Max. Surgeons. The cryo didn't work as well as expected but is better than I had. So I am having the neurctomy in the mandible (had one in the mental area but the pain was worse, did that on 9/11/08 also had surgery on 7/24/08 to remove scar tissue, did that with the Dellon Institute, all they did was take my money) on 12/11/08 in Boston. Am very scared as Mike the Medic states in his email but I have emailed him since and he is off all of his Percocets a day and just takes motrin now. I have to go for it, I don't really have a choice. I hate all the meds and want to be numb. I would love to be numb instead of in pain 24/7. So I will post when I get back. What is your story?

Dawn

Dawn the date is coming up, I wish you strength.

My story is the bicuspid tooth that was root canalled and potentially injured by the overfilled, leaked gutta percha, sealant material (most are noted to be toxic). Another possibility is that the dentist didn't pull the nerve correctly. Perhaps compressing it.

And you know, the thing is - I knew I should have just pulled the tooth out. Now, either way, I am with the tooth out, healed fine, but inside,
I have about 2 mm x 1 mm mass - sealant, that passed the apex of the tooth. When they pulled the tooth, I looked at it, and I saw at the very tip of the root, some material extruding, I didn't think about it that much. But then I was back at that office in month or so for x-ray to determine what went wrong - I though that the offender - the bad root canal work, and the tooth was gone, and I should be healed and fine,.. NOT.

The denstist basically goes ahh ahh,, "it's not my job to remove the small puff of the paste that was used" it shouldn't cause you problems.

I don't know what's the cause.

I can only describe the pain that I am having. If I feel asleep, if I am able to really really relax, not move, and fall asleep, and then wake up, pain free, I usually stay in bed trying to be in semi-asleep state, not really sleeping, but not fully awake, as that seems to fool the whole circuit (perhaps it shuts down, this is also a case with trigeminal neuralgia). The sensations - pins and needles when the pain is very bad, on top of my side of the face, the side of the lip, tingling sort of sensation. And then just to the right side, lower jaw, prior to reaching molars you have bicuspids, my 2ndary bicuspid area, inside it feels like crushing, compressing, like I had a small canal that is now filled with glass shards.

   Hi,
Are you sure you do not have trigeminal Neuralgia? That is also caused by work on teeth. You have the symptoms, with the tingling and painful side of face, extending to lips. Is it worse when you have cold air blowing on your face, or when you brush your teeth? Is your pain becoming worse? Look up Dr. Peter Janestta. Hope this helps.
