"Damaged nerves"

In September I had a crown extracted, it was a bit difficult and was done under general anaesthetic. Following the extraction I visited the dentist once a week for four weeks because my mouth did not feel right. I then had a knee replacement and was indoors for the last six weeks during which time my mouth became more numb. Finally got to visit dentist yesterday to find Lingual nerve and IAN damaged in some way.

I am taking Vit B and cod liver oil capsules. Is there anything else I can do? This is now 3 months and food tastes like cardboard. Can someone give me hope.

   Bonnie,

Nerve damage is a difficult thing to deal with. Almost all of us on this site have some form of it. My lingual nerve was damaged 16 months ago from an injection of articaine and I'm still dealing with the effects. I'm 30% improved but the burning pain and altered taste sensations are still difficult to deal with. It effects all aspects of one's life because no matter what you do the pain and altered sensations are always there. Be strong, very strong, and don't let the pain get to you. I find myself angry as well... angry at the dentist who did this to me and as a result irritable in general. This is hell, no doubt about it but remember that nerves take a very long time to heal and it's possible you will pull out of it. Acupuncture helps me when the burning gets worse... it seems to take the edge off enough so that it's bearable. Good luck and be strong.

Bob

Bob, thanks for your response, I am so pleased to have found this site as I agree that this is hell. The burning and altered taste sensation have had one effect, I have lost weight because I can't be bothered to eat. I am angry with the dentist but am thinking that this is more of a common thing than I thought. I will try acupuncture. My dentist has at least agreed to refer me to an oral consultant although he would not admit that this was as a result of tooth extraction!

Regards Bonnie

   Bonnie,

Along with the acupuncture I'm taking VitB complex, B12 (methylcobalamin sublingual), R Lipoic Acid (400 mg a day) and fish oil. I think the RLA has helped a bit with my burning and I just started taking it.

Good luck.

Bob

Bonnie, I fully emphasize when you say that you cannot eat due to pain.
I basically lay in bed all day, sit up if I can and type while semi lay down as to not aggravate the pain. As hungry as I get, the pain is so bad, that I cannot cook for myself and it's just sucks having to buy pre-made meals and have it microwaved. So once in a while, I go to my mother's and try to eat there. But I am afraid to visit her anymore as my appearance makes it obvious - all I can do is eat and lay down and wait for pain to subside, I do not want anybody else to be worried about this, so tired of hearing my only close family member, my mother, in hopeless tone say, "I do not longer know what to do.." With the dreadful component of hopelessness. She feels such a responsibility to help, it's sad... Sorry.

Capcaisin candies are noted to help. I actually used the alcohol based roll on and try to get it inside the area by the hurting jaw area. But it is so deep within, so it only helps a bit.

Also, exercise is one thing that helps me, if I have enough energy to get to the gym, and go through the period of of 30 minutes or so of anxiety due to pain and not give up and get inside the gym, then I try to work out as much as I can. I think the basis for this is - both serotonin and other chemicals released that alter pain, but also, in cases of nerve injury, the chemicals used to in vasodillation have also been used. Exercise might be the natural weight to vesodilate the vessels and allow more blood flow and thus minimize the pain.

I am talking about cardio type of exercise, but also just walking in general when the pain is very bad, appears to help.

Any experiences?

I also Bonnie, have altered sensation in my tongue, sometimes it feels just barely itchy, sometimes more of burning sensation when the pain peaks.

Stay strong,

Ed

edgaras - You may be able to get rid of this cyst without surgery... contact Volker Jahn "V" at the following email address
lights@theledman.net

He manufactures a device called the "baby Godzilla" that sends very low voltage electrical current through the tooth or bone in question which then kills any and all bacteria inside the tooth or bone. IT WORKS... I used it on an infected root and got rid of the pain in 10 minutes! You will be able to verify that the infection or cyst is inactive through a cessation of the symptoms AND an MRI or x-ray if you wish. It is very inexpensive and IT WORKS.

Good luck.

Bob

edgaras - I keep reposting this in the hopes that you will see it and take action. You can get rid of that cyst WITHOUT surgery! This device WORKS... and costs $35.00.

I can try, I mean it wouldn't hurt, but my understanding that it is not due to infection, because the tooth is vital and no cavities.
