"Very Painful Tongue improving"

Badly impacted wisdom tooth (roots almost at bottom of jaw, certainly well into nerve zone, plus infection. The tips of the roots were left in - as getting to them might have broken the jaw) expertly removed - no jaw pain afterwards but the tongue was extremely painful on the right. Here is a brief diary for encouragement:
One week in - severe pain even with maximum tramadol dose. Sleepless nights.
Two weeks in - swapped tramadol for 300mg Carbamazepine (3 * 100mg with meals)or 'tegretol', slept straight away again but painful
Three weeks in - pain beginning to be controlled well
Six weeks. Pain well masked but spreads to left of tongue too
Eight weeks. No sign of improvement, but well controlled pain.
Nine weeks. Consultent suggests reducing drug and seeing what happens, but to stick with new dose for a couple of weeks. So down to 250mg - more pain than anticipated.
Eleven weeks - pain less so reduced to 2*100. Hurt more for a few days. Then acceptable. Reduced drugs every other day.
Twelve weeks. No drugs at all! Tongue stings lightly much of the time. Sometimes feels scalded in different places.
Thirteen weeks. Small improvements each week.
I've found chewing pickled hot chillie peppers is good! And even just a very fizzy drink held on the tongue. My tongue has never at any stage been numb anywhere - but it was more painful than can be described at the start! Taste has not been affected either - but bread for example felt very rough for the first six weeks. The gum wound and stitching was never a problem - I was careful to keep it all very clean.

Well thank goodness they had enough sense to leave your root tips in.. We have heard of that here.. Wonder why you still seem to have a lingual nerve injury in that case? I have a damaged lingual nerve with the numbness and all.. I cant even tolerate hot peppers or the fizz 7 years later.. It affects the numb part of my tongue in a unbelievable way... Anyways hope you continue to improve Let us know how it goes..

I'm not a medic, but I suppose the nerve trauma was caused because there was a large amount of infected jaw bone that had to be removed too. The roots really were a long way down, and with all the work (60 minutes instead of expected 20) both nerves had to be gently moved to the sides for protection. My guess is that the lingual one was stretched a little, maybe breaking a few fibres. But that's a guess.

   Hi,
You posted this a whilte ago, and hope you can help me out! I;ve had this issue with my tongue/mouth for about 4 mos. Have been to 4 different doctors. NO HELP! My neurologist had me on neurotin, lyrica. Just this past Friday, he decided to try me on tegretol 100mg x 2 a day. Just wonder how long, if it works, does it take to take effect. Hope to hear from you.

Shari
