"numb chin and burning lip post surgery"

I had impacted wisdom teeth removed in September. Because of discomfort and "delayed healing" my OS went in and "shaved the bone down' to new bone and "cleaned it out really well". Well, right after surgery I had extreme pain and swelling. Now 4 weeks later i have a numb chin and extreme, burning pain on my lip. I have been told to take high doses of Vit B complex and Vit C. Sometimes I just can't take the pain and I breakdown and cry. I know in the scheme of things this is minor, but....I guess I just need to talk to people who understand. Everyone looks at me and they say "well, you look OK".It's not like other pain and it seems like I am nuts. My OS has recommended that I see another OS that specializes in nerve problems.

   ithurts1,

When are you going to see the second OS?

In the mean time go see your Family Doctor and get help with the pain. Many of us have found that our FDs helped the most with managing the pain.

Healing from a nerve injury can be very painful and take a long time. There are meds that you can take to help control nerve pain until you heal. Read the treatment page so you have an idea of what is available.

Hang in there and now that people do get better.

I am seeing the OS 1/19. There has been mention of Elavil or Neurontin.None of the classic pain meds help with the burning sensation and they make me sick. I will call my doc today.
Thanks,
L

   ithurts1,

I found Trileptal worked the best for the burning type pain. If the other meds don't help with that then try it.

Trileptal did not work for me. Everyone is different.

Elavil has helped my burning pain ALOT. I have tried Doxepin which is a tricyclic antidepressant similar to Elavil w/o the same level of side effects (drowsy, dry mouth). I tried Doxepin but will never stop taking Elavil because the one time I did, I was out of my mind in pain. If they ever stop making it, I'm doomed!

Good luck

Thanks for the message. I guess I need to try this Trileptal he gave me first. He said it has the fewest side effects. We'll see. Just want this to go away. I hate talking now because it hurts so much

Hi. They started me on Trileptal. It hasn't started working yet. Any insight about that. I started on 150 mg twice a day. Then in 3 days, I can increase it to 150mg in the AM and 300 mg in the PM. Today I actually had a treatment in a hyperbaric chamber! They said my injury may be new enough that this might help. It was a very strange experience. Will let you know!!!

ithurts,

I took 1200mg 2X day of Trileptal. You are on a very small dosage so it may take a while for you to see a change. It is good to slowly increase the dosage because doing so will help avoid some unpleasant side effects. The most annoying for me was being nauseous.

I would love to hear more about the hyperbaric chamber treatment.

Wow, I did not even realize what the optimum dose was!! I increase the dose tonight. The hyperbaric treatment was interesting and initially diminished the pain. Actually, while I was in the chamber I had NO pain.I am just in the beginning of the process and I will try anything and everything. If I could stand the pain in the interim, I would not take the Trileptal while I am doing this treatment. I don't want to have to take any meds if I don't have to. I have to do public speaking as part of my profession and it is painful to do so

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing 100 percent oxygen at an elevated ambient pressure – ordinarily the air we breathe contains only 21 percent oxygen at a pressure of one atmosphere (barometric pressure at sea level).

By breathing 100 percent oxygen at elevated pressure (2.0 to 3.0 atmospheres), 20 times more oxygen travels through the body's bloodstream to injured organs and tissue, causing accelerated healing and other beneficial effects. Hyperbaric medicine physicians work together with a patient's referring physician to determine the best treatment plan possible.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used to treat tissue damage caused by many chronic, non-healing conditions.
This has been well known to heal chronic and new injuries.
Will keep everyone updated!!

   L,

You might want to explore the use of magnets for your pain and eventual healing as well. Damaged cells carry a positive charge... change their polarity to negative and they begin to reprogram themselves, reducing inflammation, relieving pain, and hopefully reverting back to normal function. The process takes time, but might be just what you need. I've been using magnets for about 3 weeks now on my damaged lingual nerve and it has taken some of the burning pain away. If your interested go to biomagscience.net for more info. Join their newsletter for a 50% discount. I have no affiliation with this company at all, but after 18 months of torture they have given me some relief.

Bob
