   NAME : Diana

INJURY: Lingual

HOW: Wisdom extraction under general anaesthetic (therefore I could be injectional injury as MRI shows no abnormalities-so says my neuro)

WHEN : March 27th 2002

RECOVERY: 40-60% touch, taste, temp (maybe more). Tip of tongue much improved over last month.

CURRENT CONDITION:Right side: Painful gums, lower palate and tongue. (freezer burn sensation with 1/2 numbness or a constant stinging). Radiates to upper gums and palate. Swelling of lower right gums on the inside just over the past month. Constant.

MEDICATIONS: /THERAPIES TRIED: First I tried Tylenol 3 with codeine, then they wouldn't give me anymore so I tried drinking and that didn't even work in the beginning so I tried smoking a *&#&*(yuck) and that didn't work so I thought I might have to become a heroin addict ( that seemed pretty complicated) OR take a leap off the nearest high building, then I found this site and that there was medication for me and I saw My MD for the gabapentin. This site and the wonderful people here has been my THERAPY. Anti candida cleanse at start, methylcolbamin, B complex, Calcium and magnesium, multivitamin, ginko biloba, glucosamine sulphate.

CURRENT MEDICATIONS:alprazolam, gabapentin, ibuprofen

OUTLOOK: I would rather live with pain than have no feeling, taste or temp (I think). I beleive that I will still improve. I have had a setback with the recent swelling but beleive it is stress related. I need execise and blood flow. I get really scared sometimes but you cannot keep a good woman down.

Good question.....thats what I am wondering now. I am taking an excedrine no asprin every 3 hours during the day with afternoon time being the worse for pain. I didnt have the surgery yet...but I know my nerve is affected by the wisdom tooth because of the pain going from my ear to the front of my gums. Its been about 7 months since the first pain that affected the whole left side of my jaw.

I also have a collagen condition that causes my tissues to be more fragile than ever thought they could be. I had eye surgery about 5 years ago where an eye muscle and the nerve that runs along the eye down the nose and up to the forhead were torn..now my eye tears run when I have allergies, my head itches instead of my eye and I have double vision due to the muscle being torn and weakened.

So I am really trying to stay away from the oral surgeon but this pain is just horrible...its about the same or a little worse than the pain from my c-section when they did not give me any pain meds while I was in post op recovery.

Paul
IAN - Very numb chin, lips, gum, teeth
Wisdom Tooth extraction, lower left
Sept 02
80-90%+

Still some distorted feeling in lips, chin, gums, teeth. Combination numbness, burning, hypersensitivity, tingling, itchiness, thickness, feathery, funny feeling in affected area. VERY variable, much worse when tired or stressed. Symptoms have been very gradually fading and are much improved over 3-4 months ago.

Just took b-complex vitamins, occasional ibuprofen, lip balm helps soothe the burning lip.

Outlook: Happy enough since I know how much worse it could be. Just an annoyance now though it's alway "there", but sometimes I don't even notice it. Combination fading symptoms and getting used to it. I don't think I'll get back to 100% but do believe I'll see continued improvement. Very thankful for the healing that I've had. Not sure I'd do it all over again though.

   Name: Chris

Injury: IAN after wisdom tooth extraction. Gums, lip, and chin numbness persists.

How: OS saw the nerve between the roots of the teeth. Must've "bruised" it.

When: Almost 13 weeks ago.

Recovery: Very slow. Still pretty numb.

Current: Some of the numbness has been replaced by hypersensitivity and electrical jolt feeling. Can feel light touch, but not regular pressure on the outside of chin.

Meds: B12 and B6

Outlook: I've probably recovered about 35-40%, so I'm hoping by 6 months to be out of the woods. Pretty annoyed and frustrated by eating, which seems to make it feel more numb.

Injury: Lingual nerve

How: "routine" surgery. ENT was to remove a unknown bump on the floor of my mouth, he cut too deep and almost completely severed my nerve.
When: Feb. 20,03- almost 8 weeks ago.

Recovery: ?? Am I? I am making some progress, although very, very slowly. Was told that almost no one ever recovers 100% from this type of injury. My progress is so slow that I'm still major depressed, I break-down almost every day-even at work. I think they are about ready to fire me over this.

Meds: Currently on Neurontin, started out at 100 mg a day, have worked upto 400 mg a day now, can't tell if it's working or not, I still have burning pain so I take Percocet as well. (Also taking Prozac now due to the depression, and I'm not happy about that factor alone).

Outlook: Well I had the Surgery everybody is always talking about, they re-attached my nerve. Now I just have to wait and see if it will regenerate, was told this could take upto 6 months to know.
I have to tell myself everyday that I'm going to get better, otherwise the depression takes over. So I try to stay positive but... I must admit- so far this thing has kicked my ass. I'm tired all the time due to meds and being depressed, I'm cranky to my family and co-workers. Basically I'm a wreck just trying to pretend to "hold-on" and act normal.
Thanks to all for your time and stories, it helps!

IAN (both sides-numb lip chin gums)
Wisdom tooth extraction
Oct 02

Left side -95% after 10-12 weeks (still slightly distorted sensation on lip)

Right side - 80%
Sensations, treatment, recovery and outlook almost identical to "Another Paul's" left side injury. Almost makes me think our nerves were injured same way, same spot......

Lingual Nerve damage from a Molar tooth extraction the last week of February, 2003. Damage due to an injection of Septocaine.

Symptoms:

Continual (24/7) Burning (Freezer-Burn) sensation of the upper right side of the tongue.

Numbness on the right underside of the tongue

Lots of biting tongue/cheek - only chew on left side
of mouth.

Speech difficulties with "ch" "t" "s" (anything that involves the tip of the tongue to sound out)

No taste for 1st 2 weeks

Metallic taste after 2 weeks

Taste begins to return little by litte

Excessive salivation after 3 weeks

Freezer burn sensation begins to turn to pins and needles
sensation after 4 weeks - tongue still numb on the right
underside

Dentist refers to OS after 8 weeks

OS says have to wait and see as I have sensation in
the mouth and thus am not a candidate for nerve surgery.

Numbness subsides in the front of the underside of the tongue-
the back underside of the tongue still numb, pins and needles sensation still there.

2 months (10 weeks) have passed and still have numbness and pins and needles sensations 24/7.

Am encouraged by what seems to be sloooow progress, but am
wondering if it'll recover 95-100% someday...

Sandy in Ohio

   Sandy,
Like I have noted on a couple of these patients with the same pain from OS. Have they said anything to you about trigeminal Neuralgia, pain on one side of mouth, face, jaw, lip area. It feels frozen, burning, electrical shock, painful when cold air hits face. Dr. Peter Janetta In Pittsburgh discovered the nerve surgery to correct. Usually cause by OS,, or can have unknown cause.

   NAME: Nadine

INJURY: Bruised Nerve

HOW: Wisdom Tooth Extraction (bottom right one, local anesthesia), resulting in numbness of lip, chin, gumline, and about 4 or 5 teeth

WHEN: April 14, 2003 - about five weeks ago

RECOVERY: Slow to fair

CURRENT CONDITION: About five weeks into this, I am still numb in all areas, but not as bad. Some areas feel less numb than others. Have a lot of itching lately and hardly any burning anymore. My numb teeth are extremely sensitive, mainly when brushing. I experience very little pain, only when brushing. Still experience an occasional tingling.

MEDS TRIED: B12, but that has upset my stomach, and I stopped taking it.

CURRENT MED: Am now taking a multivitamin pill daily.

OUTLOOK: Am very optimistic that healing will occur soon. I am at the point, where I could live with this condition if I had to.

I found this site after several days visiting my dentist and couldn't feel my chin or lip. Never knew this could happen.

Injury was one week ago today 4-17-03
Had back molar pulled that had a previous root canal and was absessed also am recovering from a dry socket. Ouch!!!!!!!
Dentist won't say nerve damage, just says it'll get better.
No recovery yet. Completely numb on right side of my chin and lip and inside of my mouth and gums.
Am taking pain killers and ibuprofen for dry socket. Not sure if the pain is from that or from the nerve damage. Get a jolting shock in my chin every once in a while.
My outlook is wait and see. I had no idea this could happen and I've had a lot of dental work. No one ever metioned this.

I felt encouraged reading this sight that I wasn't the only one.

Injury was 2 weeks ago on 4/18/03.
Had 2 left wisdom teeth removed (impacted) by OS. Had to complain to dentist (who referred me) to call OS about my pain. Finally have appt tomorrow to ask questions about injury.
I have thick numbness in chin, lip, and gumline on left side. Pain and band-like pressure constantly radiating in lower front teeth always;heat or freezer burn feeling in tongue, lips, chin. Inner lips feel raw from freezer burn.
OS refuses to give stronger painkiller (DEA regulation?). Just taking OTC ibuprofen, not working.

27. "thick numbness/ could nerve have been cut to "
In response to message #13

I too have thick numbness (left side of bottom lip and chin) . This is so very annoying. Could I have asked the OS to cut nerve to avoid numbness? I had surgery last Wednesday (7/23/03) I still feel numb...at times it seems as if it spreads even further around on my left side. I'm still afraid to eat... when I chew soft foods on my right side I feel terrible pain on my left. I had all four wisdom teeth extracted...the bottom left side was impacted.

I am so glad I found this site.. I was feeling alone, strange and scared. Will I have to deal with this forever???????????

   Name: Karen
Injury: IAN
How: 4 Wisdom Teeth Extraction (I was having a problem with one, two were growing in crooked. The fourth was removed because "eventually it will cause you a problem" per the OS. It is the fourth which caused the damage.)
When: Jan 2002
Recovery: Lost most feeling and had burning and stabbing pain in lower left lip and chin. Underwent microsurgery in May 2002. Have regained 50% feeling in affected area. No change in pain. Eating and talking cause the pain to increase. I have lost 45 lbs.
Medications tried: I have taken Neurontin and Topamax in the past. I currently take Zonegran and Elavil. This combination takes away the stabbing pains but does not eliminate the burning.
Outlook: I try to be positive but as many of you know it depends on the day. Sometimes by the time I leave work I get to the car and cry. It's hard to be normal when you're not.

I AM SO SORRY THIS IS STILL HAPPENING TO PEOPLE WHY WHY ISN'T THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY STRESSING THE SIDE EFFECTS?
LINQUAL NERVE DAMAGE BOTH SIDES
LOWER WISDOM TEETH CUT OUT
10 YEARS AGO AT OHIO STATE SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY
STATUE OF LIMITATION 1 YEAR
2 % RECOVERY
AFTER ABOUT 2 YEARS I COULD FEEL JUST THE VERY TIP OF MY TONGUE, IF ANYONE HAS EVER TRIED TO HOLD A 9 VOLT BATTERY ON THE END OF YOUR TONGUE WELL THATS THE WAY MY TONGUE HAS FELT FOR TEN YEARS. IF YOU THINK IT'S FUNNY TRY DOING IT FOR TEN MINUTES AND THEN LAUGH.(I KNOW THAT KNOW ONE IN HERE IS LAUGHING) I ONCE HEARD A STORY ABOUT VINCENT VAN GOGH. HE CUT PART OF HIS EAR OFF BEACAUSE HE ALWAYS HEARD A RINGING WHICH DROVE HIM CRAZY. WELL THERE IS ALWAYS A RINGING IN MY TONGUE.
NO MEDS EVER ONLY PRAYER
STILL ONLY PRAYER TOTALLY GOES AWAY WHEN I'M ASLEEP (MIND OVER MATTER) BUT VERY EXHAUSTING.
I MISS FRENCH KISSING, I'VE BIT MY TONGUE SO MANY TIMES IT LOOKS LIKE HAMBURGER, I USE TO TELL MY KIDS I WAS GOING TO PIERCE MY TONGUE BECAUSE I COULDN'T FELL IT ANYWAY. i'VE BECOME OBBSESSIVE COMPULSSIVE TRYING TO KEEP MY MIND OFF OF THE FEELING. THE GOOD NEWS i DON'T RUN MY MOUTH AS MUCH, I DON'T FEEL PAIN ONLY ANGUISH, AND BESIDES THE MATALIC TASTE I DO STILL TASTE. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO ADD I WAS TOLD THERE IS ONLY TWO OTHER PLACES IN THE BODY THAT A NERVE GRAFT CAN BE USED ONE IS BEHIND THE EAR AND ONE IS BESIDE THE FOOT. DOWN SIDE. MAY FEEL PAIN ONLY. OR TINGLING IN THOSE AREAS. AND IT MAY MAKE MY CONDITION WORSE.WAS ALSO TOLD THAT I COULD HAVE BOTH VERVES CUT SO I WOULDN'T FEEL ANYTHING. I WILL POST MY STORY SOON UNDER JIM M. AND PLEASE EMAIL ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS AT GOODFIX@AOL.COM WOULD LOVE TO HERE FROM YOU.

Many of these names on this message thread are very familiar and helped me during my IAN injury. I haven't posted in a while and thought this survey was a GREAT idea and though I'd give an update on my condition as well:

TYPE: IAN (lower left chin/lips/gums)
WHEN: November 19, 2002
HOW: Four wisdom teeth extraction
MEDS: I took B-12 vitamins for a while, but no longer take them
STATUS: About 95% recovered. I have full feeling back in my gums
and lips. I have a small area (about the size of a dime)
on my chin that's not really numb, but feels "different."
OUTLOOK: I greatly improved between 6 and 10 weeks. I don't think
about it much any more. Like another person on this board,
this injury really rocked my world for about 6 weeks! I
couldn't do much of anything and was SEVERLY depressed.
Prayer and positive thoughts are always a good thing!

I PRAY FOR EVERYONE ON THIS BOARD! GOD BLESS YOU!

   My name is Lynn

I have an IAN injury or swelling or brusing ???

I had one partially erupted Wisdom tooth extracted. 15 very long days ago!! I will say that I only had a local, administered 4 times ,with the extraction and because of my anatomy the OS said it wouldn't numb down deep where the nerves were, the pain during and after the extraction were like pain I have never experienced before and hope to never again.

I take tons of vitamins and Ibuprophen and some acetaminephen round the clock/

I'm in a lot of pain/discomfort still have numbness in lower lip and chin (one side) also some numbing and lots of pressure in lower teeth on the side of extraction. Having great deal of difficulty functioning as the pain just wears me out wakes me in the night. My daughter graduates in 10 days and we are doing an open house etc and quite frankly don't know who were going to pull it off....

I'm pretty angry and I want to say thank you it is so nice to be able to say how I feel knowing that I don't have to sugar coat it as all of you will understand God Bless You all!!!!!

INJURY AIN damage caused numbness in lower left lip and jaw

HOW by injection for root canal of tooth 18 (that's on the lower left, 2nd from the back) I felt the electric shock when the needle was placed, before the injection. How I wish I had said something- before he injected toxin into my delicate nerves!!!

WHEN 5 days ago, June 9th

RECOVERY numbness of the first 2 days has receded, giving way to soreness at the injection site, and tired pain from talking. Can't eat on that side, but that could be due to the root canal surgery.
Also burning pain comes and goes.

CURRENT CONDITION depression, numbness, pain, confusion (how could the dental/medical community let this happen without informing patients of the risks?) I also have pain in other teeth nearby that may need further root canal surgery (unrelated to injury). I can't tell where the pain is coming from- nerve damage from injection, bad tooth, or healing from surgery.

MEDICATIONS/THERAPIES TRIED so far just prayer, and water and multivitamins. Will do the B-vitamin and Calcium supplements people have posted.

CURRENT MEDICATIONS Tylenol with coedine, or Advil

OUTLOOK Am so grateful for this web site, which has given me hope for recovery. Will continue to pray for my recovery and everyone else on this site. It's been less than a week, so I have to wait and see.

INJURY Nerve damage, not sure which kind. Right side of tongue
numb as well as the inside of lower gum.

HOW Lower right wisdom tooth extraction

WHEN Mid-February 03, 5 months ago

CURRENT CONDITION No improvement to date. Tingling persists
especially along the edge of my tongue.
Feels swollen all the time but sometimes
larger than at other times.

MEDICATIONS None. OS has not prescribed anything.

CURRENT OUTLOOK Have an appt. with a nerve specialist in 3 weeks.
At one point I had decided to just live with it
but am having second thoughts. I really don't
have much confidence that it can be repaired and
I'm afraid further damage will occur. I just found
this site this morning and have been reading much
of the day. Glad to know I'm not a freak and I
feel fortunate that I am not also experiencing
pain, just non-stop aggravation and occasional
bouts of anger which I immediately try to quench.

It's been a week since I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth extraction. Feel the whole left tongue and left lower gum numb, swollen, no taste, no sensation all the time with tingling along the edge of the tongue occasionally. Can feel weak touches on the tongue. The edge and bottom of tongue are more sensitive than the surface of the tongue. Do feel some strange changes of the feelings of the tongue a day. My symptom is similar as Ian Cummins's.

Had root canal, tooth removed, hysterectomy
Pain began after I awoke from hysterectomy in 2000, dental work was done six months before.
Trigeminal Neuralgia/Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia
Been on Neurotin, Codiene, Oxycotin, Cymbalta, Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, Advil, Duragesic Patch, Ambien, Davacet, now onKlonopin, and Methadone
Had three brain surgeries for nerves that become frayed, without sheathing, Dr. Peter Janetta in Pitsburgh discovered this nerve procedure and is known around the world.Has taught most surgeon his procedure.
Pain still comes and goes through out a day. Have freezing/burning, numbness, in mouth, teeth, face,, throat, left ear.
Cold weather makes much worse, stress makes worse, hot baths and warm air makes better.
It is going to snow here in Louisville, so I am feeling pain.:+) :o

Hope and pray everyone can find help. This surgery does help 90 percent of time, mine was more than one nerve involved so I am different. There is hope, so be sure to go to Dr. P Janetta's website on facial pain.
God Bless-Kat

It has been quite some time since I've checked the site, but saw the Comparing Notes.
Ann
TYPE of Injury - I don't know for sure, but nerve damage.

WHEN - November 11, 1998

HOW - Lower right wisdom tooth extraction not impacted. When the assistant sprayed something in my mouth my tongue went cold. When I was given the shot I felt a strong shap pain.

MEDS - I tried vitamins, and acupunture at the beginning along with pain killers. I now just take pain killers.

STATUS - About the same after the 6 month point. Some days I can just ignore it - The numbness is just "there" a fact of life. Other days, like today the pain is terrible. The inside right gum is painful and when I touch where the wisdom tooth was I feel a pain in my tongue. There is a burnt numb sensation on the right side of my tongue. Somedays I have pain in the right ear from it.

OUTLOOK - Had I not found this site when the injury first happened I don't know where I'd be. Now my outlook is acceptance.

WHEN: May 2002
RECOVERY: A good 6 months
CURRENT CONDITION: Back to normal
MEDICATIONS/THERAPIES TRIED: Oral steroids strting the day after and B vitamin supplements for a couple of months
CURRENT MEDICATIONS: None
OUTLOOK: So glad to have recovered. That first week, I had pain like I have never experienced in my entire life. I can empathize with those of you that have suffered through this. Maybe, I can offer a little hope that you too will recover like I have. I have not had an injection since my injury and I;m not too sure how I will handle it.

INJURY: Nerve damage from injection in lower left side (see my postings)
WHEN: March 2001
RECOVERY: slow, almost back to 100 %.
CURRENT CONDITION: a slight inconvenient sensation on the left side of the tongue. (No pain, sense of taste back to normal)
MEDICATIONS/THERAPIES: Only Vitamin B for several months
OUTLOOK: I'm glad I have almost recovered after more than 2 years. Although my injury seems to be "minor" compared to all the more severe cases on this Board, it took more than 2 years to have a normal tongue. Fortunately I never felt pain, but I had to go through this inconvenient phases of "numb tongue - burnt tongue - impaired taste" etc.

   Loraine,
I don't know where you are located, but I am in Canada and you can get sublingual B12 (methylcobalamine) a health food store or homeopathic pharmacy.
Some of the doses you find are really low (1000mcg=1mg).
I buy AOR Methylcobalamin (website is aor.ca). I take up up to 20mg per day, some may take more - B12 is not toxic in high doses.
You should also take a regular B-complex but don't exceed dosages on that, too much B6 can be toxic.

Cost: 60 5mg (5000mcg) tablets are $31 Canadian. I find they are well worth it and last me about 3 weeks.

Magnesium is important too. I take up to 1000mg of magnesium (citrate) per day. Available at any health store, reasonable prices.
Vitamin C is good too. If you get ester-C it is buffered with calcium so you can take more without upsetting the tummy (I take 3000-5000mg per day, with meals, it is high but serves me well, you may want to test out your limit. Vitamin C doesn't stay in your sytem it goes right through you but the benefits are still there.

Keep your immune system up and don't skimp on the B12!(there are 2 kinds, make sure it is the methyl).

Good luck
Joanne

   NAME: Teresa
INJURY: Right Mandibular Injection Injury to both IAN and LN.
SYMPTOMS: They didn’t start immediately. No shooting pain from injection. Everything seemed normal after injection and sensations returned to normal, but two days after surgery experienced shooting pains up my lip and a funny feeling in my mouth by my lower lip. A bad headache for 8 days then tingling that started on my upper and lower lips with aching along jaw. By 3rd week had severe shooting and burning pain on my jaw that turned into intense itching. By the 2nd month the tingling, pain and BURNING had increased to include my right cheek and tip of nose. Then my tongue started to ache and tingling sensations began. I was told my symptoms didn’t follow the normal pattern. I said, but they are real! I felt like I was losing my mind.
HOW: During an implant.
WHEN: Jan 20, 2003
RECOVERY: Very slow, but I think there is progress. I do believe the medications have helped calm my symptoms. Not sure I could do this without them.
CURRENT CONDITION: It is now 6+ months and I’ve started to have some relief in the last two weeks, but I still have tingling, aching, burning and itching. I have stopped my pain meds for the last two day. So far doing OK, some pain, but more like an annoyance.
MEDICATIONS/THERAPIES TRIED:
2nd month - started Remeron, Neurontin and Ultracet.
3rd month - added Trileptal and changed from Remeron to Effexor.
“All my meds where slowly increased or decreased to help avoid side effects.”
5th month - tried Hypnosis (Guided Visualization). I think this helped me get ride of some of my anger and doing this has help me feel more positive about my recovery.
Weekly - Meet with my counselor to talk about my feelings with someone other then family or friends. I think this is helpful because I don’t always want to burden them with my problems. It also keeps myself moving in the right direction towards healing.
Daily - I also journal what I’ve been feeling. I believe this has saved my sanity.
Daily - I try to keep my stress down and to rest as much as I can. I also try to do things for myself that gives me happiness.
CURRENT MEDICATIONS: 600mg Neurontin - 3X/day; 300/450mg Trileptal - am/pm; 150mg Effexor - am; Ultracet - prn; Calcium and Multi Vitamin daily
OUTLOOK: Lately I believe I will recover 100%…that does change with how I’m doing pain wise though. I will get better, just not sure when.

   Loraine,

I could not find sublingual B12 (methylcobalamin) locally either. I had to order it from an intranet site. You may want to check this option out too. Here is one site I found that had a few choices.

http://www.iherb.com/met5000.html

I try to take 5mg am/pm.

   NAME Marion

INJURY 'Probable' nerve damage after injection of lidocaine for back upper molar filling. Doctor and dentist have been evasive about what has happened. Oral specialist mentioned trigeminal neuralgia or mandible joint problem. I am not sure that is the same as damage caused by injection or is TGN the result ie. injection is the cause and TGN the effect? Nobody seems able to explain it to me properly.

WHEN January 2001

RECOVERY Very slow.
Almost imperceptible improvement over months of numbness in lower right quarter of face and awful pain in upper and lower jaws. Extreme sensitivity to hot/cold/sweet food and drink. Unable to lie on right side of face, chew that side or taste properly. Numbness on that side of tongue across part of nose, inside cheek and blurred vision at times in right eye. As numbness receded to about 35%, with 65% feeling in skin areas, headaches began during waking hours with pains up side of face to top of head on right side.Occasional electric shocks up side and across face, also in shoulder and neck.
Some problems swallowing at times.
CURRENT CONDITION Slowly improving although far more electric shocks
and headaches when tired and stressed. I'm worrying about the MRI scan and what it might show up. Some numbness in cheek and chin still.Occasional sensitivity at back of mouth near site of injection.
Headaches if I forget to take my neurontin so I daren't try to reduce dose yet. If anything the headaches are worse because I try to read more and that makes it worse. I had practically given up reading before.Eye strain definitely makes it all worse.
MEDICATIONS/THERAPIES TRIED
Awaiting MRI scan but not sure this will show anything??
300g Neurontin 3 or 4 times a day at first since November 2002
The muscles in my cheek were very slack after the numbness because I wasn't chewing that side.My speech is sometimes slurred as a result. I started one-sided facial exercises with my mouth closed, just screwing up my cheek that side. The muscle tone has improved to about 80% effectiveness from about 10% when it was numb. I could actually feel that it was flat and lifeless. Now it is on its way back to feeling normal like the left side of my face.
CURRENT MEDICATIONS 300g neurontin 3 times a day.
OUTLOOK I'm optimistic that I'm on the way to recovery but wish that the headaches would stop.

Marion,

I'm glad to read that you are still seeing improvements since your injury in January 2001. I received my injury January 2003 from an injection too. I don't have numbness like you, but do have the pain. My area of involvement doesn't follow "normal" patterns either. If you look further up on this thread you will find one of my posts.

I've been concerned about my recovery because I'm getting close to my one year mark and I think my symptoms are only being controlled with medications. I don’t think my nerve has healed. I’m not ready to back of my medications either to find out how much healing I’ve experienced. My neuro said that 80% heal within the first year. Dang statistics - I don't think I will be one of these "lucky" ones. Nerve healing can be so PAINFULLY slow. It has been physically and emotionally painful for me and has been hard for me to keep my attitude positive during this. I've found this site to be very helpful for my emotionally healing and the information is invaluable. I can get the support and information I need that I can’t or don’t get from my doctors on this site.

I’ve found for me I need several medications to help me control my symptoms. You might want to check into this possibility if you still have a lot of pain. I noticed you said you couldn't lay on your right side of your face. A few months ago that was me. Just the touch of the pillow on my skin would hurt and the longer I kept it there the more it would hurt. My neuro increased my Trileptal dose I am on and I can now put my face on the pillow. Every evening when I go to bed I roll over on this side and just enjoy this feeling of no pain. I also use topical treatments to help me too.

Good Healing

Thanks for yur response. I have been able to sleep on my right side for a few weeks now, but only for a short time. I think that I could be more pain free if I took more medication but I really hate taking pills and the thought of more or stronger medication doesn't appeal to me. Masochist I suppose!! I feel that it is improving on its own. I know this is a silly attitude when I'm in pain but I can cope this way nevertheless. If it were unbearable I might feel differently.
Best wishes to all of you out there.

   Marion,

Glad you are continuing to heal and you can sleep on your right side now even if it is only for a short time. These small improvements add up to big improvements down the road.

I believe medication is a personnel choice. Your attitude is not silly nor are you a masochist just because you don't want to take more medication. You are the only one that knows what you need to get by. Everyone is an individual when it comes to healing and when it comes to the amount of and type of medication they can tolerate. It is your choice, just don't let yourself suffer needlessly.

Reading your story has given me hope that I will heal too. Thanks for sharing it with this site and me.

Good Healing to use all.

   ok here goes it.

Injury to nerve by Articiane injection given for a root canal, very front top tooth ( odd everyone else seems to be an injury from a back tooth)

Date of injury 8-27-2002

symptoms.. pain pain and more PAIN! felt like somone was standing on the side of my face for months.. numbness under my eys and along the bridge of my nose still..at one time the numbness went clear down to my collarbone...

Ive tried just about every pain medication ( I was taking about 12 Vicodin a day there for about a month) Elival,Valium, b12,every OTC pain med made.

Only meds I take now are OTC pain meds as needed and the occasion Vicodin at night if Im having a bad day.
eating seems to make the pain more tolerable as does hard candy.
Outlook--- lets see.. well positive I guess until I remember I still have to have a crown put on that tooth and know that horrible pain could come back. What I have learned from this is to research and ask questions.Dont ever take for granted you have been told all the risks...
Good luck to all

Just read your post Valerie and hope you are still checking the board. You are not alone in your injury. I too had nerve injury after a root canal by an endodontist on my front upper incisor. (2 years ago.) For 2 weeks all was okay, but then the pain came back. In the mean time, my general dentist put in a post and core. (The tooth was already crowned because it was chipped in childhood.) Anyway the endodontist talked me into a apicoectomy (surgical root canal where they cut the gum and put a filling on the end of the root.) I couldn't have the tooth retreated (conventional root canal) because of the core and post. Anyway, I've had pain ever since, and I have been to many specialists and spent almost $2,000 trying to find an answer. No one has a clue, but I think it is nerve damage. Sometimes it goes away, giving me hope, but then it returns and I become depressed. Now I'm taking both Elavil and Neurontin, which helps a little, but I feel so spaced out and my memory is affected. If you find any answers, please post. I also fear losing my front tooth, however, the x-rays look fine, and I would hate to have it pulled and still have pain. Hang in there. Jan

Jan, I am wondering if you are still having problems or if you have found anything that works? My case sounds similiar to yours. Upper tooth, endo won't admit to ANYTHING! I can't believe how I got brushed off! 16 weeks and according to them, after an apico..."I need time to heal!" How come everyone else heals in a day or two?

I am starting with doctor #9 and soon #10--otolaryngologist and a nuerologist. Can anyone recommend the type of doctor I should be seeing? Tomorrow I go to my internist to address what I am finding on my own and to talk about meds. It seems that several who have posted on this board take Vitamin B's.

Help! The burning, hot and cold sensations, and the pain to my teeth that have no roots is killing me and depressing me, too. I'm on the verge of tears all the time and it hurts sooooo much to talk.

Hopeful that someone will respond,
Linda

   Linda,

Read the treatment page to get an idea of what meds are available. Your internist or Family Doctor should be able to start you on some meds to help you with your pain. Don't let them send you out of their office without help.

I understand the being on the verge of tears all the time and the pain. I had the burning pain and it was very hard to deal with.

Here is what my doctor initially RX'd for me. You my need something different, but this will give you and example of what your doctor should and can do for you.

I was RX's an anti-depressant (Remeron), anti-seizure (Neurontin), pain med (Ultracet). Anti-depressants/seizure meds are usually given for nerve type pains. Again, read the treatment page on this site to get more info.

Good luck and know you are not alone

Linda. So sorry I haven't responded to your message until now. I haven't been on the site for awhile. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find much help for my nerve injury. In addition, I had referred pain on the tooth directly below my front tooth, had a root canal (even though the x-ray showed nothing but it hurt to touch), and then an apicoectomy on that tooth too. Then because it is such a small tooth, I had to have it extracted and recently had an implant put in. It all looks fine now, but I've been through so much and have spent a lot of money out of pocket. And, I still have the same pain. It stays on the left side of my face, and in both my lower and top jaws. (All the dentists say that's unlikely because different nerves are affected, but the pain's real to me!) The area above my upper front tooth is tender if I touch it, but every dentist/doctor I have been to says that tooth is fine and the bone has grown back nicely. I don't want to have my front tooth pulled if I don't have to. Anyway, I do believe it is a nerve injury. When I eat or suck on candy or gum, the pain goes away, especially hot pepper candy. Sometimes its just a dull ache and sometimes it burns. Some days my whole jaw aches. First I prayed for a cure, then that a medicine would help, now I'm praying to accept this. I work full time and have three children. Its tough, especially knowing it could be the rest of my life. This site has helped me cope. Most everyone else was injured from wisdom tooth removal, so it's interesting to note you have a similar story. Let's keep in touch via the board. I'm taking Neurontin 300 mg. 3 times a day and Lexapro, an anti-depressant. Sometimes I take Xanax, which really helps a lot, but I don't want to become addicted to it and it makes me sleepy. Anyway, if you are still checking the board, please let me hear from you. I pray you find relief. Jan

Jan,

The areas on your face that you talk about are all from the same nerve called the Trigeminal. It has three branches that serve different areas of the face, so what your doctor stated about it being different nerves isn't totally correct. It is the same nerve just different parts of the nerve. There is a trigeminal for the right and one for the left side of the face. Sounds like your left trigeminal has been injured since you say all the pain is on the left side. It is very likely it is a nerve injury. You have relief from the medications and that is another sign it is a nerve injury. Your pain and symptoms are very real. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

My injury is from an injection in the lower jaw, but I have pain in all three branches of the Trigeminal. The referred pain is a possiblity because all the sensations from these branches join together in the Trigeminal Ganglion. Sometimes the injured senstations are referred to the other branches that aren't injured after these branches join together at the ganglion.

This is what many doctors like to call "atypical trigeminal neuralgia" because it doesn't follow what they would normally think is "normal". I call my injury a "post traumatic trigeminal neuralgia" that doesn't follow a "typical" pattern expected. Is it a real injury ... damm straight. Sounds like the dentists you've seen don't understand the true nature of nerve injures.

It is hard to know when the pain in a tooth is a sign of real trouble or of referred pain after a nerve injury like yours. I've found if frustrating to know when it is a sign of real trouble or a fantom. If your X-rays look fine I wouldn't have to much work done on the tooth causing the pain, but I would watch it very closely.

Take Care

Thank you so much "T." I really appreciate the research and explanation. I lost a perfectly good lower tooth because no dentist could explain all of that to me. (After having the root canal and apico on the lower front tooth the root cracked from all the trauma to the tooth.) I've read many of your posts and wondered what has worked best for you? Also, I read that you feel you are on the road to recovery and have had improvement. My pain sometimes disappears for periods of time, but always returns, so I don't get my hopes up. My injury was almost 3 years ago. Do nerves ever heal after that point? Outside of this site, I've never known anybody to go through this, and all of the oral surgeons and dentists I've gone to throw up their hands as if they have no clue and have never heard of anyone else having this type of nerve damage. I am trying so hard to live a normal life, especially for my family, but I think about my mouth pain everyday and remember fondly the days I was without pain. I do have a strong Christian faith, and that has given me a lot of comfort. Thanks again. Jan

Jan,

Glad I could help. I believe healing can continue for years after an injury. It is more likely to get better if it happens sooner, but I've seen an improvement in myself after the one year mark. I've been able to reduce my meds last month and have not seen an increase in pain. I would not have been able to do that six months ago. I don't know if I will ever be totally meds free, but it is still healing.

What helped me the most? ... that is a hard question to answer.

Physically I think medications helped me the most. The side effect can be difficult, but I found them better then the pain. I couldn't function with the pain. I found I wasn't the tough girl I always thought I was. The pain humbled me and I guess that isn't always a bad thing. I need more rest and comfort then before my injury. I find hot showers and a heating pad on my face helpful. Good food and vitamins too. Topical treatments have also been useful.

Emotionally I'm not sure what helped me the most. I found an inner strenght I didn't know I had. I prayed, meditated and wrote down my thoughts. I'm finding a ways to forgive and accept my new life. It is hard work keeping myself from falling into a pile of self pity.

I gained strength from people on this site and my pain support group. I allowed myself time to cry and grieve. I let my friends know when I needed them. I took time to smell the roses and I don't work overtime anymore.

I try not to think about the days before my injury because it only brings me despair. I feel hopeless when I think of my life in pain forever so I don't want to look out into the future either. I did this in the early months of my injury and I cried everyday. If I fall into thinking like this I will cry again.

I try to live in the present now and not the past or future. I learned this in my pain group: Stand up and put your left foot in the past and your right foot in the future... Now if your living in the past or future look between your two feet and you will see the present. Now think about it...if you aren't living in the present and it is stuck between the past and future it is being peed on. Your missing your life. It is a silly way to remember it isn't good to live in the past or future. It gives me a giggle thinking about it this way.

The present isn't always easy living in with or without a nerve injury, but it is all we have. We have to find ways to make it the best we can. Here are the words I tell myself over and over when I'm falling into despair. I guess it is a small prayer I offer up to God, asking to remind me were these strength are within me so I can get through these hard days. It hasn't been easy, but so far I've found what I've needed to get me though this mess. I say this over and over when I feel like I can't go on: Faith, Hope, Courage, Stength and Forgiveness

Take Care.

Good luck getting anyone in the dental profession to know what's definitively up. I've been to five -- two dentists, two endodontists, and an oral surgeon. Until there is more sophisticated technology, we're stuck searching for answers. I asked for an MRI since the x-rays I've had don't show whether my root canals were finished to their ends. I was told that an MRI would be ineffective. I'm now seeing a neurosurgeon who prescribed Trileptal for post-traumatic nerve damage as a result of dental procedure. I'm hoping the med works. I will never succumb to phony scare tactics from dentists who want to apply crowns instead of fillings because of course they'll make more money through crownings. I never had dental misery until I agreed to crowns which were initially performed by an incompetent. Three months later, after agony and antibiotics, his equally incompetent partner removed the crowns, did root canals, and reapplied bulbous crowns, and I'm still in misery.

By any chance do you live in the southern Calif. area? I have experienced almost the same problems with the same results. 12 root canals later I found a specialist out in Riverside, CA who is really helping me. I am 75% better over the past 4 months.

Best of Luck!

Greetings. No, I live in VA. I'm hoping this anti-convulsant med works. If it doesn't, I refuse to undergo any dental exploration only to wind up worse or the same. I'll take Tylenol the rest of my life. May I ask what your specialist is doing? Good luck to you, too.

It sounds like you may be taking Neurontin. I am taking Neurontin 300 mg three or four times per day. Part of my problem is that I have had a pinched nerve in my neck which affects the nerves in the face and mouth. I have also just started taking Lorazepam 1 mg at bedtime. This is a type of muscle relaxer. The hope is that it will prevent me from clenching when I sleep, and also relax the muscles in my neck at the same time. It appears to be working.

My specialist advised me when I first saw him to avoid any foods that are difficult to eat (requiring a lot of chewing or other types of stress to the mouth, teeth or gums). He wanted me to brush less often and be as gentle as possible with the teeth and gums.
The same goes for flossing. I stay away from red wine, chocolate and cheese as much as possible. In some people these items can set of the head and facial nerves. I make every effort not to rub my tongue around touching my teeth and gums, but you know how difficult it is to break that natural habit.

My Neurologist gave me Neutontin for the pinched nerve in my neck and I have found that so far it is the best thing for any nerve issues one may have.

I hope some of this is helpful and that you recover quickly. I know how terrible this type of situation is and the way(s) it affects your total life. I have been dealing with my situation for over one year, but since I found this specialist four months ago, my condition has greatly improved.

Best of Luck for a speedy and total tecovery.

Sincerely, JW

JW

I'm taking Trileptal which I believe is in the same family of drugs as Neurontin. Unfortunately, I am a cheese and chocolate lover as well as French bread addict. I also have the tendency to rub my tongue against the area of the mouth that is bothering me. Thanks for the info and the best of luck to you, too.

Oh, this might be of interest to you. I am seeing the following type of specialist - Oral Medicine, Orofacial Pain, Temporomandibular Disorders and Dentistry with General Anesthesia. He has the following letters after his name - D.D.S., M.P.H., M.S.D.

These are all of the titles on his business card. You might want to try and find an Oralfacial Pain specialist in your area. They deal with these types of issues all of the time (their speciality).

I was lucky enough to have a dentist that knew such a person. Mine is about one hour from my house, so I'm very fortunate.

Again, good luck!

   NAME Will Ahlborn

INJURY Damage to Left IAN

HOW I had the lower left wisdom tooth extracted; it had not yet erupted but I was told it would cause problems later--and the younger I had it done the easier recovery would be.

WHEN November 7th, 2003

RECOVERY After surgery, I had no feeling in lower left lip and teeth at all. I currently experience tingling in the skin between the lip and chin which persists about 70% of the time.

CURRENT CONDITION Frustrated, NOT in pain, and tingling, I have gone back to a soup diet so I wouldn't be chewing on my lip all the time. After some severe lip bites the lip has almost healed.

MEDICATIONS/THERAPIES TRIED Immediately after surgery I was using an antibiotic, muscle relaxant, ibuprofin, and codeine, but now I am on no meds except vitamins... multivitamins, B6, and B12.

CURRENT MEDICATIONS Vitamins.

OUTLOOK It has only been 11 days since my injury. I have to expect things will get better. Since I have not experienced any pain as of yet, and the tingling began within one week of the injury, I'm hoping I will not experience any permanent pain. Recovery seems likely. I have talked with some wonderful people from this board including Dr. Staley (thank you again) who have given me alot of hope (after my dentist scared the heck out of me). The best case scenario is I will recover and be able to educate many more people about the nightmare of nerve damage via dental procedures. Can you believe my dentist didn't even mention the possiblity of negative side-effects (including nerve damage) before the procedure?? I feel like a real dummy for not doing my homework first.

Please read my post. There is help, much hope. Pain can come staying for a couple of weeks or longer than leave for about sane time, but pain gets closer and longer w/o much time in between with relief. Meds only help for a while.
Good Luck and keep your chin up. Ambien was given to me for sleep, and that is when I noticed I was free of pain, at night. Finally put Ambien and ingredients together. Klonipin is excellent for pain.

INJURY Lingual - Full bone Wisdom extractions

Surgery date 1/27/04

Numbness lips, chin, gums, teeth?
I really sense a constant improvent although very slow and slight. Almost feels as if my "real face" is loacte about a inch under my actual face and is slowly moving towards the surface. I feel constant aching in my chin and a lot of pinching tightness. My lip tingles. Gums are just numb and teeth have shoots of cold icy feelings occassionally.

CURRENT MEDICATIONS - Ibuprophin for the pain occassionally. Lots of vitamins and minerals - B50, C, E, and CA phos/FE phos/K phos/NA phos/ Mag Phos disolving caps daily ( I ran across this is a local health food store and it is said to "restore normal balance to nerve cells" and I was ready to try anything that was good for the nerves. I have ensure daily because I do not feel like eating alot of solid foods that I have to chew and I feel hungry more often with a soft diet. Ensure really helps satisfy my appetite and give me an extra boost of good nutrition.

OUTLOOK - Positive - I honestly think I am steadily improving. It has only been 3 weeks for me but the tightness is definately subsiding and I have alot of hypersensitivity over the feeling of numbness which I know sounds weird but that is the only way I can think to describe it.

Surgery May 1994. The Dentist who did this to me told me he would put me in a twilight sleep with no needles. In a half drugged state I found out that he was injecting me and I fought with him in the chair. After the surgery, he told me he had no idea what was happening to my tongue. My bill disappeared and so did my xrays. He was removing foru impacted wisdom teeth. I went to a lawyer who said I would need expert witnesses who would claim this was malpratice I didn't have the energy to go through with this. After speaking to another dentist in the area, he did tell this dentist does have a reputation for this kind of behavior.

Tongue always feels burnt and chewed on, lip on left side burns.

Current medication- Ibuprohin, lorazapam, singular, lexipro...

I have lived ten years with this and to reduce the feelings I chew gum. My outlook is accepting it as part of me and move on.

NAME Katie
INJURY LIA Nerve damage on right side - lip, gum and face
HOW wisdom teeth extraction - bottom two
WHEN - June 2001
RECOVERY - improved slowly over 1st year and a half, then levelled out, but I think will power and acceptance has been taking over the healing process.
Sometimes I am so absorbed in something I suddenly realise that the distortion has not been a conscious thing, though for the most part I have seen sense of feeling, where my distorted sensation is a constant sensation, something that sits above how I feel the rest of my body - but this is now a normal thing - so for the most part I live with it okay.

CURRENT CONDITION
MEDICATIONS/THERAPIES TRIED painkillers - but never did much good, b12 during recovery - does anyone continue taking them after a prolonged period?

Also when I went to the dentist for a regular check-up and had to get a filling they used lidocain - and not that I would want to sign up for regular treatment and I have avoided meds pretty much the whole time - I can see how effective it is - yes you don't feel anything, and for the long term in my situation not required, but it was almost like a holiday from the regular way my face feels.

CURRENT MEDICATIONS
Nothing, contemplating the benefits of acupuncture - any info welcome on this form of treatment and the outcomes.

Of my three symptoms – (the constant distortion - sort of heavy feeling, a little like a fat lip or when your foot goes to sleep, the feathery feeling when gently touched and the increased pain when bitten etc - try my best to avoid that so not a huge concern.) It would be the distorted sensation that I would be hoping the acupuncture to heal.

OUTLOOK
Hopeful, working with it rather than lamenting, - when you get rundown sometimes you get a bit overwhelmed by it all. But I am so encouraged and greatful that this forum exists.

   name: becca

injury: ian and ln

how: lower left wisdom tooth extraction

when: february 11, 2004

recovery: hopefully i'm in the middle of it right now.

current condition: the pain is pretty debilitating. the burning is killing me. the most annoying part is the stomach ulcer that i developed from taking too much advil. (i've asked my friends to start calling me "elmer" b/c i feel like a 90 year old man and that's a 90 year old man's name. i mean how many otherwise healthy 30 something women do you know that have to take "nexium. the purple pill?"

medication tried: too much advil (oops!), vicodin (might as well have been taking sweettarts. they probably would have worked better)

current meds: i try to limit myself to four tylenol a day

outlook: it has to get bettter, b/c i have a difficult time believing that it could get any worse. i stumbled upon this site today and i'm totally thanking god right now! i was beginning to think that i was crazy. i'm going to buy some b12 as soon as i leave work!

I'm new, but glad to add my information.
NAME: big2ooth AKA Barbara
INJURY: lingual (self diagnosed after a year of searching for answers!)
HOW: injection for root canal/ 2nd injection one hour later for same day pulling of tooth which couldn't be saved--that is when the injury occured..big electric shock felt..extreme pain, I cried out, had tears running down my face, told him THAT HURT!!!!, oral surgeon ignored me.
WHEN: March, 2005
RECOVERY: One year later, the sensations are improved, but still quite uncomfortable. The two molars which were closest to the extracted molar (I had already had my wisdom teeth removed years ago) have caused me extreme pain, discomfort, and a variety of weird sensations such as feeling like I am chewing glass one minute, or feeling like I am chewing rubber the next. They also feel HUGE, like they are the only teeth in my mouth. I also had numbness along side of my tongue. Taste sensations gone on that side of mouth.
CURRENT CONDITION: As I mentioned, the sensations are diminished, but when I am stressed out or tired, they are more bothersome and noticable. This has been a very emotional issue for me, because I could find no help from the oral surgeon or my dentist. I went to 3 dentists for help. NO one would address the real issue. I found this site and discovered the 'root' of my problem!
MEDICATIONS/THERAPIES: Ibuprofen, cranial sacril therapy (which was what the second dentist I saw recommended. It didn't help at all with my discomfort, but brought up a whole lot of other emotional issues..wow! What a trip!)
CURRENT MEDS: None. I use a mouth splint/guard to break the 'cycle' when I need relief.
It helps somewhat by diffusing the sensations.
OUTLOOK: Encouraging. Optomistic. Since it has been over a year, and I realized a few months ago that things were not as bad as before, I am encouraged. I realize the body tries to heal itself and it just takes time. I had a problem with retinol hemmoraging about 4 years ago, and it took two years for the resulting dark spots to disappear, but they did. I believe the nerve injury in my mouth will improve with time, as it seems to have done to a degree already.

Barbara: I cannot believe you refer to yourself as "Big Tooth" since that is what I have been calling my condition for the past two years. The injection (for a filling) hit a nerve and the electric shock occurred. My dentist apologized, saying that it happens sometimes. After the tooth was filled, I went back to him at least three times complaining that the tooth feels big, out of place in my mouth and stings -- like its hot. My tongue constant plays with it, my bite is completely off and sometimes its downright unbearable. The first visit, he filed the filling down, thinking it was too high; the second visit he took that filling out and put a medicated filling in, thinking I was somehow alergic to it. (The medicated filling is still in). The third visit was for a night guard which gives me some relief, as well. Recently, for one three week period, my tooth went back to being "normal". I couldn't believe how wonderful it was to go through a day without Big Tooth. Unfortunately, these sensations returned but I have hope that perhaps the nerve will eventually repair itself.

   name: nancy

injury: IAN on lower right side.

how: had impacted wisdom tooth extracted by oral surgeon 7 years ago. was warned that root of tooth had grown into the nerve. ended up with dry socket from same extraction.

when: 7 years ago!! been living with this for a while.

recovery: lots of tingling the first 6 months,dr. said the nerve was trying to regenerate. did get some feeling back the first year.

current condition: chronic pain, half of lip,gum and cheek numb, redness and swelling around gum, hypersensitive. tightness in front teeth, pain is worse at night. horrible head-aches on right side of head and depression.

current condition: have learned to live with it. it Can be done, i think that it is like a death...after the shock wears off and you go thru all the stages...shock,anger,denial,etc.. then you realize that this is something you have to live with the rest of your life. you keep busy, use your pain meds.,don't talk about it all the time(trust me,people DON'T want to know about your pain every min. they are around you). relax...this is how you are now and it could be alot worse.

current meds.: ibuprofen, tylenol,(tylenol migrain-if the pain is unbearable),paxil, blood pressure meds. heat works wonders!!

advise: if you are young and they tell you that you need to get your wisdom teeth extracted. DO IT BEFORE THE ROOTS GROW INTO THE NERVES!!
i waited too long and was 34 when i had my wisdom teeth out, wish i had done it sooner.

NAME: Tricia

INJURY: Lingual Nerve Injury

HOW: Wisdom Tooth Extraction (all four)

WHEN: Feb 04

RECOVERY: It took around 7 - 9 months for 80-90% recovery (I was only 18 so it healed faster for me)

CURRENT CONDITION: My condition is so mild now, and liveable. I only feel a slight tighness in my upper left side, and slight tingling and numbness at times. I feel it more when I'm sick.

MEDICATIONS/THERAPIES TRIED: Ibuprofen and Vikaden, also tried B- vitamins for awhile

CURRENT MEDICATIONS: none now

OUTLOOK: I am so blessed that I healed fast, and what I live with now is so mild that it doesn't bother me at all...Sometimes I actually appreciate the little discomfort I have because it's a reminder of what I went through and that God healed me, and it also helps me remember everyone else that helped me so much on this board, I don't think I would've made it through if it wasn't for everyone here, and I always make sure I come back on here so that maybe I can help someone else have hope.

Injury: IAN on lower right chin, lip and gum
How: WT extraction
When: Sept 07
Recovery: Still feel tightness ard lower right teeth and gum and hypersensitive lip and chin, but no pain, thank goodness. Tight feeling worsen on stressful days.
Medications: none.
Outlook: still have hope that I can fully recover, although after reading that if I don't recover fully within 6 mths it could b permanent, I got a bit depressed.

I know I shouldnt be complaining considering many of you seemed to suffer more brutal injuries. But would really appreciate it if anyone can tell me about themselves or knows someone who has recovered fully from IAN injury after more than a year. After reading the forums I'm thinking of tryg out vit B12 or complex and massaging the chin (didn't dare touch chin much 'cos initially was told to avoid movements immed after the extraction, but it's been a year now). Anyone has any suggestions?

   Hi Ed,

I hope you are seeing some signs of improvement. I have had a very similar experience to yours. May I ask which tooth caused the problem for you? Do you know what the toxic chemical that entered your nerve was, was it a sterilising fluid for the canal? Do you think it entered through the tip of the root or between the side of the tooth and the gum? Have you contemplated taking any action against your dentist?
You say the use was improper, would you be so kind as to further explain.
Sorry for all the questions, but very worried at the moment.

Best Wishes
Ross

   Ed,
Hi, did you ever call or go to Dr. Peter Janetta's web site for trigeminal Neuralgia. You should consider going there to be evaluated for your pain. I too had remembered having a tooth pulled six months before pain but not sure if that is what happened. Klonipin is the best for pain, works well but if there is something they can do, it is worth not being in pain, since meds make us tired. Hope you read my recent post, but my pain ended up being everyday, and now it is better, but not like before surgery. I ended up with a feeding tube for three months due to pain and difficulty swallowing since pain made eating and swallowing worse. It has affected my speech, and my feeling on left side of face is less than the other. Have you tried to take a long cotton applicator put in throat, seeing if you gag on BOTH sides of throat, from far left to far right? If gag reflex is less on one side, nerve is damaged.
Please let me know.
Kat

89. "MAGNET THERAPY IS HELPING ME!"
In response to message #82

LAST EDITED ON Jan-15-09 AT 09:40 AM (CST)

Hello All,

I am in the process of using magnets to repolarize the damaged cells in my lingual nerve. Basically injured or diseased cells carry a positive electrical charge but when healthy they are negatively charged. By subjecting them to a barrage of negative energy from the magnets you will reduce inflammation and allow proper neural impulses to resume. When the cells repolarize normal function is restored. Positive magnetic energy can also be applied after inflammation is relieved to actually heal the damaged nerve tissue. In the three days I have been using the magnets (they are taped on) the burning pain in my tongue has been relieved by at least another 20% or 30%. This is significant and makes the pain more bearable. I wear them for a minimum of 15 hours a day (you can sleep with them on). After about 10 days I plan on using the positive and negative polarities together to actually repair the nerve tissue itself. Magnets have been used successfully in spinal cord injuries so I'm hoping it will be able to heal a peripheral nerve (lingual) too. It seems to be helping. Here is a link to the best magnets on the planet for our type of problem.

http://www.biomagscience.net/

Peter Kullish, the founder, will gladly answer any questions via email. I have no affiliation with this company whatsoever, I'm just trying to help all who suffer from this horrible damage.

   Thank you Bob,
Hope you all do not think I am trying to just advertise Dr. Janetta, I am not. Just know he too is a very smart, old, medical founder of several different medical procedures that are used everyday. I too agree those are the docs that may be worth taking time to visit if pain is severe enough and persistent. I just know how some people do not know the difference between the two or more than two neuralgia's. All of these patients have the same symptoms as other neuralgia's that are simply eradicated by this microsurgery. I am just interested in supplying the info to those who may want another, and one of the best opinions. Dr. Janetta treats many different neuralgia's.
Hope you can find relief, I know it is very frustrating for those of us who feel that after waiting weeks for another Appt.. When appt. is over, always leaving having a sense of loss, another ending to a visit without the answer that I was waiting and begging to hear. Another future in pain. Another no answer to what my future holds. Be very insistent, call office after hours if needed, demand a fix. HAHAHLOL.
Be sure to explore all avenues possible, trying hard not to diagnose yourself, by saying, "no, I do not believe that is what I have, so I am not going to research the symptoms of that type of nerve damage". That is so easy to do with the internet. Look at me, I am seeing those here on this sight with the same symptoms I have, then I am suggesting them to consider another diagnosis or asking if that is possible. I just remember when I was waiting for a diagnosis, that in itself was very painful and costly. So, just trying to help. Prayer does much good also. Keeps your spirit up, then pain will be a little less. Hot baths work well.
I will pray for you and all on this site who are struggling.
God Bless-Katsmilie_remote('')smilie_remote('')

Hi Kat, Im glad you made it here to share your story. Any doc. that does nerve repair is a rare thing around this site.. So you posting the Doc.,Im sure it might help someone. I just recently saw a show on tv, i think it was called medical mysteries.. which showed a person with your type neuralgia who underwent a surgery for relief and it worked.. I have lingual nerve damage from wisdom tooth extraction or maybe it was the injection, Im still confused on the exact cause.. 7 years later im down to mostly just a numb tongue/gum and a taste malfunction after a nueroma was removed 6 1/2 months after the injury.. WTF happened to your hearing? Did you know that might happen? You are so right about the hot bath.. Im in Ohio and its 0 degrees and waist high snow Im going to ad the calgon..
